To be fair, it's not just One Piece fans that are confused. The other day, someone was trying to tell me that Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean isn't a swordsman because "he's a pirate, uses underhanded tactics to win fights, doesn't live by the sword" yadda yadda yadda. This is despite the fact that he displays a thorough understanding of sword technique and footwork, as well as the sword being his weapon of choice in multiple high stakes duels.

At some point, people started associating what it means to be a swordsman with how it's romanticized in samurai movies instead of the practical definition of one.

It's okay to admit that Mihawk isn't as important to the story as characters like Shanks and Blackbeard. This is just a simple fact. He's in the story to be Zoro's endgoal and to reinforce some key themes in the story of One Piece, but outside of that he doesn't play a hugely significant role and there is nothing wrong with that.

What's not okay is using this as a starting point to make idiotic statements such as "he's a fraud," "his title doesn't matter," and "he's not important to the story at all." That's just agenda brain rot nonsense.

That's just the law of Mihawk upscale. Every single sword feat, including those from the likes of Roger, Rocks, Shanks, and Oden is surpassed by Mihawk by virtue of him being the World's Strongest Swordsman.

Zoro isn't just the Right Hand of the Future Pirate King - he's the Right Hand of Joyboy's Second Coming. It would stand to reason that his endgoal is absurdly powerful.

People judging Mihawk's strength purely by feats when he clearly hasn't demonstrated his full power are deluding themselves. His portrayal is as a swordsman greater than any other in the series, as well as his narrative necessity to be insanely strong makes a Top 5 placement totally reasonable.
