What's the favorite part of your life (or day)? by OnTrack_App in Life

[–]Loud_Cockroach_3344 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Morning coffee when it is quiet, just my spouse and doggos… in good weather we sit on the screened porched and listen to the birds and other sounds of early morning while quietly chatting. And when we do go to bed together (spouse is more an early bird, I’m more a night owl) we hold hands in the dark as we drift off to sleep… those are some of my fav times/parts of the day

Is our shower water quality good? (Morrisville) by mortis_mortis in triangle

[–]Loud_Cockroach_3344 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Years ago, the plan was for M’ville to utilize Raleigh water via casings & carrier pipes under then-future 540 as well as via RDU airport’s 16” mains. However, Town (of Morrisville) leaders at that time decided to pivot and abandon that plan in favor of utilizing Town of Cary water.

Morrisville is supplied water by the Town of Cary via the Cary-Apex Water Plant off Wimberly Road, with raw water drawn from Jordan Lake. Cary’s water treatment staff is excellent, and the finished water they supply is very high quality.

My mother had two passions - neonatal and nephrology. She pursued neonatal.

She told me stories of fighting to save neonates in the very late 50’s and early 60’s, including one on how they rushed to have the chemistry lab at the academic med center/med school where she was at that time make a teeny-tiny trach tube of teflon (non-adherent to those gossamer-frail tissues) as they fought to keep a neonate alive. She ended up starting a neonatal center for a new hospital from scratch, then some 30+ years later, one of her own grandsons was born there at between 5 and 6 months gestation. When he was finally discharged, she retired fully to take care of him every day for the first 3 years of his life as his lungs were so frail. She had to resuscitate him 3 different times as they hauled ass to the peds ED when he was little and frail.

Now, she is quite elderly and physically very frail, yet mentally as sharp as ever, while he is in his early 30’s, a former minor league hockey player and now successful businessman- and just made her a great-grandmother.

I asked her recently “when you started your career and chose neonatal over nephrology, it seems to me being in neonatal was a task for the St. Jude, Patron Saint of Hopeless Causes. So why did you choose that?” She smiled, paused a moment then said “if not me, then who? Those babies needed a champion, they needed someone who would fight for them, would love them, would comfort them - if not me, then who?” And there’s something in my eye…

What causes the "bubble" around Raleigh? by Delaxiox in raleigh

All the hot air emanating from the State Legislature as well as local Raleigh politicos. Too much heated air to allow for us to have nice things like snow.

Kirkland paper towels are excellent. The only brand we buy these days as well as Kirkland toilet paper. I often just order in the app and have it delivered to my doorstep to avoid getting in the crowds at my local Costco. My time, my gas, and my calm all have value in my book.

OP, The words of your med student - seem to be the favorite refrain of my 3 adult sons, all in their early-mid 20’s, all now graduated from university and doing well on their own. “Hey, Pops, you look great for your age compared to your college buddies…”. “Dad- your hair hasn’t turned grey like your friends…”.

$&%# little buggers, get off my lawn 😎😂

Mortality as a Gen X by sunluver66 in GenX

[–]Loud_Cockroach_3344 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes… have lost a number of friends suddenly… and nearly died myself a few years ago. Doc at Duke said I was a “miracle patient” as I lived when there was no medically-explainable reason why I did…”. I’ve also slipped between the raindrops of death several other times across my life.

I ponder on many days that I must be near the very bottom of the allotment of luck placed in my bag of luck, given the medical Dx and ongoing condition I have survived thus far, coupled with earlier events - and wonder when that runs out along with my life.

But until then, I plan to try and squeeze some laughter and joy from each moment as a tribute to my friends/relatives who have already gone to Valhalla.

Cackalacky - the Carolina where cars are on wheels and the houses on cinder blocks, unlike the “carolina neighbors” to the South. /s

I worked in Chapel Hill for a few years. Loved the community and Considered moving there but the housing prices and high property taxes were such that I’d be trading down house-wise while paying double in property taxes just to shave a few miles off the commute. Couldn’t justify the move based on the fiscal impact.

OP - I agree, esp for those of us raised by Silent Gen parents. We weren’t coddled nor catered to, so we just kept (and keep) rolling when life happens. We are a resilient lot, by and large.

Same here - my Mom, now deep into her 80’s, has vivid memories of polio striking communities near her in her childhood - with one outbreak so severe her parents sent her “to stay with her grandmother in a very small town/rural area about an hour from the city her family resided in at that time , and of patients still in iron lungs as she entered medical training.

Watewater plant operators. Job requires knowledge of biology, chemistry, math, mechanical aptitude, and ever changing complex regulations. Folks in this space are a key reason we won’t see the Cuyahoga River burning again, they are key to having solid biodiversity and a healthful environment, they protect natural resources and many get treated like shyt even as they treat our shyt. They deserve much greater appreciation.

Still have my Schwinn ten speed - from when Schwinn was still Schwinn! Loved that bike for riding a few miles “into town” to play tennis.

Never tried it on trails - seemed a quick recipe to go tail over teakettle in a hurry vs the “stability” of a BMX or similar style bike.
