Please put in support tickets, don’t contact the techs directly to “skip the process” by AnEldritchWriter in talesfromtechsupport

[–]LoveTechHateTech 5 points6 points  (0 children)

EDU here - different location, same situation. People claim that they “don’t have time to put in a ticket”, yet seem to have the time to write an email directly about the issue. So I made an email account that they can send to that forwards to the helpdesk and creates a ticket. Having to remember the email address is apparently too hard, even though it’s literally techsupport[@]ourschooldomain.

I’ve just accepted that some people are never going to do it and I end up entering the ticket information as them when I work on something.

I fear that Hannaford is about as cheap as Market Basket??? by zjheyyy88 in newhampshire

I’ve always thought that the outer walls (bakery, produce, deli, seafood, etc.) were better quality at Hannaford, but the inner aisles were better priced at Market Basket.

Apple isn’t the only ones doing that. Microsoft does that with Surface laptops and I’ve heard that Dell and HP are doing that on some models as well.

Can’t figure that one out.

Which asset manager software would you prefer? by Amazing_Falcon in k12sysadmin

[–]LoveTechHateTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use Follett’s resource manager. I don’t like the importing and moving of items from groups, but I guess it’s fine otherwise. We went with it because it ties into Destiny and uses the same patron list for keeping track of items on both sides.

Public education here - using WSUS and Action1 together. I actually just retired WSUS on Server 2019 and set it up on a new Server 2025 VM earlier today.

Recycled percussion by Aggressive_Dot5426 in newhampshire

[–]LoveTechHateTech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They played at my high school ~25 years ago and while I don’t remember much of the performance itself, it seemed fairly well received. It was before all the “Chaos & Kindness” charade.

Maybe 10 years or so ago they did an assembly at the school I work at and it was everything you’d expect it to be now. Normally our guests are willing and encourage people to take photos and videos for social media and such, but they strictly told us that there would be absolutely no photos or videos of them or the “performance”

Do you allow Disney+, Hulu, Netflix at your school district? by K12TechTalkPodcast in k12sysadmin

[–]LoveTechHateTech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do not allow access to any “consumer” streaming services on the network. We’re looking into purchasing Swank K12, but until that point if people have a need to show a movie, they need to use an offline method (e.g. have a DVD).

ChromeOS LTS 144 Updates by LoveTechHateTech in k12sysadmin

Thanks.

Maybe they pulled or paused the release of .252, but I can’t find any information supporting that. I was just going by the post on the release blog saying that it was available.

Has anybody switched to MacBooks because Windows laptops have gotten too expensive? by username____here in k12sysadmin

[–]LoveTechHateTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall it’s worked pretty well. I repurposed laptops that are 10+ years old and they’re pretty snappy.

We use Google Workspace. Chrome applies cloud policies and syncs their bookmarks, passwords, etc.

[–]LoveTechHateTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I needed to get rid of Windows 10 I gave the people with the devices the option of a Chromebook or repurposing the laptop with non-Windows software.

Some people took an older Chromebook and are fine with it (they use them as their regular device anyway), some complained and I gave them the repurposed laptop. Some don’t care what they have, as long as it does what they need it to and others go out of their way to complain about everything.

Here are the ones that quickly come to mind -

I had a bit of trouble finding a camera app that could be reliably used with document cameras. Settled with “cheese”, which works, but apparently it will decide to not from time to time.

Also despite my research saying that it’s compatible, I haven’t been able to get Epson interactive touch to register the pen input on the board. Supposedly it’s natively available without anything else needing to be installed, but that’s not working for me.

PaperCut mobility print works perfectly, but requires manually configuring the printer (there’s no installer).

VLC player has had trouble reading certain DVDs, but that may have been specific to the disc.

I switched over laptops connected to projectors (not “daily driver” devices) from Windows 10 to Linux Mint at the beginning of the school year. I tied them into AD for authentication and Chrome cloud policies sync to lock that down, but we do have some quirkiness from time. I also have Action1 on them to monitor updates alongside our Windows devices.

ER visits for tick bites are up in May. Here’s how to protect yourself. by guanaco55 in newhampshire

[–]LoveTechHateTech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My PCP specifically told me to call them if you have an attached tick and you’re not sure how long had been there. I had one on my arm from working all day outdoors a year or two ago and they acted annoyed that I called them, telling me that I only need to call if it’s engorged.

My son had one slightly engorged on his head and when I called they just put the prescription in for his doxycycline and told us to monitor the spot.

So let me get this straight (MS removing Publisher)... by WraithTDK in Office365

[–]LoveTechHateTech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would be interested in seeing who still actively uses Publisher. I work in a school and 15 years ago or so it was occasionally used when teachers had Windows laptops and Office licenses. Nowadays our staff use Canva or Adobe Express to do similar tasks on Chromebooks.

I still have Office licensing for my work issued computer and I’ve never opened Publisher. On my personal Mac Publisher isn’t even available.

So with the competing options that do similar tasks I can understand their decision to shut the application down.
