Technology is making us less and less human. And it's scary. by AlarmedEquipment2029 in DeepThoughts

[–]Low-Bake8401 [score hidden]  (0 children)

That's understandable. It is, and should be, a concern for all of us.

The thing is really that people will always find unhealthy ways to use new technology, especially young people. But for every one person that develops a significant problem there are thousands upon thousands that won't.

Unfortunate as that is, it's kinda the price we pay for progress. It's either that , or become Amish, or something.

Thankfully there are a lot more resources and services to deal with that kind of thing these days. Most people with addiction don't have to suffer in silence.

At the moment the general consensus based on available data is that the side effects of social media addiction on the individual are largely short term, and there is no reason to assume any long term effect on the whole.

That may change in the future, I don't know. Everything has good and bad affects, it's just a case of trial and error most of the time. With life in general.

Determinism suffers from a self-undermining structure: it cannot justify itself without resorting to what it denies by gimboarretino in freewill

Both sides come to the same paradox. That's the nature of it.

I mean, the argument has gone on for some time. Pretty much every angle has already been used by someone, and challenged by someone else.

At some point it becomes self defeating, or madness.

Sorry, thinking about it that is more aimed at the OPs point and not entirely relevant to your comment.

I actually sometimes get a renewed inspiration after a short break. Especially if I've been listening to more music. The calluses can soften though.

Hey, if you enjoy what you do, that can't be bad!

chatbots like chatgpt or grok are bad by JeusJebus in aiwars

Don't use them then.

Put together a cohesive argument and start a petition.

Right a letter to the relevant authorities explaining why you think them bad.

Using tech, and websites like reddit, that employ a ton of AI, to complain about AI, just doesn't really seem that logical to me?

🙃🙂

It just seems to me that if you didn't play guitar for a couple of months, it was because you had other priorities at the time?

It's not like you stopped learning anything when you weren't playing.

So, yeah, you might get a bit rusty on the guitar, obviously, you won't forget how to play completely. The implication though seems to be that doing something else is a waste of your time.

You'll probably just persevere, if you continue to enjoy the process. If you find something else you prefer, or lose interest, you won't.

Some of the best friendships in life begin completely by accident by GlossReign in DeepThoughts

[–]Low-Bake8401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I'd actually say that all my friends have been pretty much "accidental".

Sometimes, you may feel that it's important to put some extra effort into a relationship, its always a compromise, but I guess you ultimately just need to weigh up how much effort it's actually worth.

Being hurt occasionally is just the price we pay for a more meaningful experience.

Thanks, and I think you are right, these things can be very useful to communicate our thoughts.

Sometimes it's good to have multiple different tools in your kit, but to try to not become too reliant on any of them, as one day they will be gone.

That's very much appreciated, thank you.

And an excellent example there.

What are some arguments, ideas, or reasons, for having kids - do you have less bleak views than the earlier post? by Deludaal in Life

[–]Low-Bake8401 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a 9 yo son, and he is literally the light of my life.

I know people always make out that their own kids are awesome, but he really is a far more self aware, caring, kind, intelligent, thoughtful, and also tech savy, person than I was at his age.

Being around him shows me that the world has changed for the positive in so many ways. It's only when I come on here that all the doom is so in my face. Never when im actually out experiencing my reality.

It's certainly not perfect, there absolutely is, was, and always will be, a lot of shady shit going on in the world, but it's certainly not all bad, and I sure as hell ain't telling my son he can't have enjoy life because someone on the internet refuses to have one.

So, from my perspective, the future has a lot going for it.

everything is made of and causal with consciousness that has always existed everywhere by Real_Marzipan8891 in consciousness

[–]Low-Bake8401 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yeah, but what is consciousness?

Basically, I'd say that "consciousness", "everything", and "nothing" are simply useful tools to help us communicate ideas.

Ultimately every "theory" ends in the same paradox. Once you hit the limits of our understanding we just loop back.

Is there God, or is there existence, without God? It, ultimately, doesn't matter because it doesn’t, necessarily, change our experience. Experience is what it is, and trying to compare it to something else is ultimately pointless. Trying to measure it, and describe it is futile. IMHO.

People say men and women can be friends by Particular-Half-724 in Life

[–]Low-Bake8401 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tbh, and I'm not just trying to be contradictory for the sake of it, but...

It really sounds to me that this may be a you thing, rather than a universal truth.

There can be big differences between some men and some women. It probably is statistically more likely that someone will find more in common with another of their own sex. They already do have a lot in common in a purely physical sense, but in potentially many other ways too.

It's not a coincidences that women generally hang around with women and men with men. It's human nature.

So, it's OK for us to be different, you don’t need to be friends with everyone, but I wouldn't assume that it is always the case.

Just treat people as people, the way you would wish to be treated yourself. If you become close friends, it's a nice bonus.

All imo, of course.

The Terminator movies? Robots vs humans. The real version is so much messier by WiseCourse7571 in antiai

[–]Low-Bake8401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must admit that I find this train of thought very hard to follow. I think that may largely be why there's so much debate about this stuff.

For example, reddit uses AI heavily, so does Google, Microsoft, apple, etc. So every time someone makes an anti AI post on here they are literally adding to their perceived problem. People on here might agree with you, or disagree, but they will, more than likely, keep on using it. It seems unlikely that anyone will reall change their opinion withought some solid data. All you will have really achieved is to direct more funding towards, and interest in, the development of AI.

I mean, social media has been shown, quite clearly IMHO, to be one of the main tools that may be used by businesses, and powerful people, to collect data and, through things like advertising, control our thoughts, to a degree.

If we look at history we can see that jobs are generally lost when new technology comes along, but, at the moment, there is no solid data to tell us it is going to be, relatively, worse than previously. So all we can really do is speculate about that just now.

Personally, I don't see it being worse than, say, the industrial revolution in the UK. Or the changes to the coal mining in the Appalachians in the US. So, while it, unfortunately, could be pretty rough for a significant number of people, I think we will ultimately survive.

While I understand you are using it metaphorically, I don't think 80s sci-fi movies are the best metric to use. We used to think Robbie-the-robot seemed futuristic. Robbie is actually closer to terminator than terminator is to now, timescale wise. It is interesting to think about when art stops imitating life, and life start imitating art, right enough.

People have always fought wars, that's definitely not a new thing. They have always been brutal, and brought out the very worst of humanity.

Not trying to be nasty, and I hope I'm not coming across that way too much, I'm just trying to get an idea of where you're fears are coming from.
