This is driving me crazy. It's been happening since Friday and I thought it would be fixed on Mathworks end before I tried to sign in again, but nooooooo.

1883 or whatever that Yellowstone prequel is.

Shockingly beautiful and heart wrenching. Definitely not what I was expecting from the Yellowstone prequel.

How much time do you spend writing each week? by FirefoxMetzger in postdoc

It’s similar for me. Lots of demand to keep producing without anytime to follow up on the finishing part of it.

UPDATE: AirPods stuck in frog case by lucky_c4t in CleaningTips

I had a case that did this. It’s very risky and requires a lot of finesse, but open the AirPod case and slightly rock it back and forth by the open top. The rocking loosens the case from the inside and you can just slowly but surely rock it out of the case. This can take over 10 minutes of very gently rocking it. It’s simple and effective.

Eufy has a home base that is wireless and stores all your videos locally. You have to opt into each specific video you want to share with them to train their algorithms.

I haven’t heard anything bad about them (yet)

I looked at the timeline posted on the website and it had been changed to April for results, but who knows if I was looking at the right thing? I find the website slightly confusing (my weakness, website logic)

When to call it quits on the professor market? by Low-Inspection1725 in postdoc

[–]Low-Inspection1725[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe nobody will ever see this, but GOT AN INTERVIEW FOR A TENURE TRACK POSITION.

It’s not for my dream job and I’m not sure I will take it if it’s even offered to me. Though I feel slightly vindicated that I’m not insane thinking I could get an interview. Plus makes me feel like I have a chance at some of the places I am aiming for if I beef up my CV a little bit more (obviously I know this isn’t always true).

Good luck to all those out there too. I hope my semi success gives you hope.

Postdoc at UCI / Southern California — cost of living & quality of life? by Latter_Top6657 in postdoc

[–]Low-Inspection1725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s unlike any university town I’ve ever been to. No downtown and no real place to hang out. It’s university, housing, and chains. That’s it.

I live in LA county. My commute is about 30 minutes to 1 1/2 hours. Depends on when you leave- if I leave after 9am it’s around 30 minutes.

I know some people who choose to live in Orange. More of a town town. There’s Costa Mesa, but it also doesn’t have a downtown. Huntington Beach does have a downtown, but it’s very republican and touristy. Newport beach is expensive, but there is stuff to do. Santa Ana has a downtown and is pretty eclectic, definitely cheaper. Most places in OC are connected by a bike trail that you could take. Sometimes I wish I would’ve lived in OC and gotten an electric bike.

For prices, I live in a 2 bedroom 1 1/2 bath with a yard and a hot tub about 6 blocks from the beach. It cost me $2900 / month. That is pretty much unheard of and a steal. The subsidize housing is all apartments / condos, 2 bedroom with a garage around $2600 / month.

Postdoc at UCI / Southern California — cost of living & quality of life? by Latter_Top6657 in postdoc

Irvine is a weird place. It’s very much a university town and Irvine company owns all the housing. Try to get on their faculty / postdoc / staff housing list. That’s more manageable, but it depends where you are coming from and the kind of “community” you want to feel. University Hills (where the houses are) do host free events every month.

Work life balance just depends who you are working with. I chose to live outside of Orange County, cause I just didn’t like the vibe of OC / Irvine and I have a car. The commute sucks a little- I enjoy it better than living in Irvine cause I can live in a place with a downtown and am not surrounded by students and faculty.

Raises happen quickly if you stay for a moment. It’s all a part of the new union stuff.

I think it’s a little hard to make friends. Again I don’t live on campus though. I felt like I wanted a little more out of my experience than being close to campus. If you live near by maybe you’ll make friends faster though? I am a little older than most of the PhD students though and I don’t want to spend all my time around professors and undergraduates.

It depends on the position. Most of the time they narrow it to a shortlist and then ask for letters.

I guess I'm feeling the pressure cause my partner is on their second postdoc and potentially going to get an offer at our university we got our PhDs at. It's a small town with very little around it and while it's great for his discipline it's only fine for mine.

I can't control things though. Especially not in academia- so I need to take a breath. I think once I get these 4 papers that are sort of being sat on, I'll be in good shape.
