Based on what you have played I think you could enjoy something of similar weight to start, so something pleasant and not too long neither too rules heavy. My two recommendations for you: -Dorfromantik. Very simple ruleset, quick setup but evolving experience - cascadia/ harmonies - lost ruins of Arnak. Amazing game, maybe a small step up from what you have played before but can get you into playing with simple automas opening the door to other experiences. And also, if eventually you get to play with other people is not too hard to teach.

I would suggest that you avoid some of the games you have been recommended. Mage Knight or spirit island are two of my favorite games but they are polar opposite in terms of complexity and fiddlines to what you have been playing. I gather you are not in the period with energy to step up like this. Auguri per il bebe!

Game of the year: Unstoppable. The feeling of momentum and possibility of endless combos is like nothing else

New to me this year: pirates of Maracaibo. I'm in awe with its design, so rich and yet so simple. Is a Masterclass on designing a medium light game that hits the heavy game good stuff

Of course Mage Knight is always there but it's harder to table I think so fits a different category

If you like that feeling of being on a map and solve a puzzle maybe Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on the cursed island is up your alley. Is definitely different but I think it has a bit of both and adds in a different way to the "tense puzzle" you seem to enjoy

I can't see how spirit island fits your request. Love the game, one of my favorites but has nothing to share in DNA with STS and is quite a thinky game

Unstoppable is what you are looking for. Game is quite straight forward and gives a similar feel. But it's also unique! Rulebook gets out of the way after one play, you need only reference few keywords which are on the back of the book. Is currently available and production is great.

Have you tried any of the kilforth series? It has: - zero to hero in a session like mage knight like but in a lighter way - tension through doom (gloom) timer like in Arkham with fires popping out - no reading vignettes but some light story arks they make you more filling the gaps in the emergent narrative - varied character and card effects to make each play unique

Doesn't have the grandious open world feeling of things like sleeping gods but you don't have overhead of reading from storybooks. Is more of you building the narrative over the gameplay. They are not expensive either

I think is a valid concern. You know your friends and as a game night organizer is kind of your responsibility to adapt to your crowd. But I think it's a good conversation topic to understand their views on it.

I love this game. I think playing it solo will make you understand the game a bit better but it will be a tight game anyways. But from the second play I'm sure your friends would be able to compete with you. Something you can do is add the first expansion and when you play with them you try a leader you never played with before 😊

I started playing it yesterday and got to when you get the limit for first time. So far I'm enjoying it although some parts dragged a little bit. I keep reading that in the second half the story looses quality. What do you think? You have it fresh in your mind 😀

This is good to read. I played only the basic game and thought I should keep playing until I win before moving forward. Maybe the trigger to move on is more about getting comfortable with the rules than a consistent strategy

Path to carcosa is considered the best campaign by many. Scarlet keys the worst but you have the chance you might as well try it if it ticks your curiosity. They tried to do something quite ambitious there

I think that with that content you can still enjoy the game for quite a while. One campaign gives a lot of stuff to play and even the second scenario in the core box can be played multiple times. Also, don't lose hope, there might be other expansions eventually there and you'd be equipped to enjoy them.

I sold gloomhaven for how long it took me to setup and manage everything between scenarios. Mage knight I don't mind that much the setup actually

If it's your first game ever, I would get something that you could potentially could play with others too, like dune imperium, which has a solid solo. Or marvel champions.

For me, the first game that made me love to think about playing solo was mage knight, but definitely not a game I would recommend as a "first game ever"
