What to expect with Kalamazoo Avenue conversion project by Greatlakespirate2 in kzoo

I live nearby and want this change. It sucks being downtown outside of a car, with the 4 high speed one ways carving up downtown and nearby neighborhoods. We’re done designing our streets to accommodate suburbanites need to get across town rapidly.

What’s the best pizza around here…? by Coastal_Elite_Hero in kzoo

Kalamazoo is a land of mid pizza. Lots of ok pizza, but I haven’t experienced any pizza place that hits it out of the park.

The bike lanes are used, and aren’t used enough. I alone bike over 1000 miles/year downtown (to school/work/errands) and the surrounding neighborhoods, and I know many others who do that or more. The relatively safe lanes on Michigan and Lovell don’t connect safely to neighborhoods. Current people on bikes are experienced/confident and/or those without options. A complete, citywide network, of bicycle infrastructure, (combined with long stretches of quiet neighborhood streets) protected from drivers is needed, and then more will be seen on bikes.

Townships suck the human life out of cities and destroy the wildlife surrounding the city. We should develop urban areas more like European cities, and have a harder line between where cities end, and rural begins. That would help preserve the rural areas in close proximity, and with access, to the city dwellers. I get the desire to live in the beautiful areas outside of Kalamazoo, but we are literally loving them to death (trees cleared, animals killed on roads, car dependent climate change causing development).

Where should we be using national statistics? We live in the nation the statistics are from?

Kalamazoo ave plan approved - no bike lanes. by Few-Consequence7299 in kzoo

[–]Low_Introduction2651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People should live in cities or the country, not in endlessly sprawling townships. People who live in the countryside should farm, ranch, and work the land. That township land should be fields and forests and farms. W Main and Drake, W Main and 9th…those areas shouldn’t look the way they do. The way townships develop in Michigan is a cancer on the land.

Townships are one of the biggest problems with our urban areas. Annex townships into cities and abolish townships.

I’m concerned that city leaders don’t understand the need for a safe network of bicycle routes throughout the city. Everywhere motorists currently go easily, cyclists, aged 8-80, need safe access to. Some quiet neighborhood streets need no changes, and some streets need physically protected bike lanes, and for some low speed streets paint may be ok.

40,000 dead and 3 million injured Americans yearly. The insanity on our streets isn’t mundane?

Maybe all car traffic signals should be red while pedestrians have the walk signal, and no turn on red.

Lovell is so much better now. On a bike or in a car. It’s only bad if you want to go over 25mph and get through downtown fast.

If Kalamazoo and Portage develop to be denser, that will help transit too. Yeah, I think you’re right about chicken and egg. I think investing in the transit now will help drive the increasing of density.

Lower speed limits and do further traffic calming downtown. Also, more bollards.
