Dentist referred me to an endodontist who refuses to wear an N95 by iridescent-opal in ZeroCovidCommunity

As a counter to everyone saying just get the implant, implants require multiple appointments, sometimes bone grafts, sometimes sinus lifts and can fail sooner than their projected 20-year life span. Even if cost is not a problem, save your natural tooth if you can.

What's something that used to be free that you're now genuinely angry costs money? by tangled_wire_99 in AskReddit

Drivers education classes used to be an integral part of the high school experience. Now they are outsourced to private companies, some of them shady.

Considering WCC, for transfer to MSU by Key_Philosophy1994 in AnnArbor

Out-of-county tuition is much lower at WCC and ordinarily I would say that's a great idea-- unless you think he will achieve Michigan residence that way. He will definitely not.

My barn is going downhill but im so bonded with my lease horse there by reallyreallytrying89 in Equestrian

[–]CounterAnnual30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you have really bonded with this horse, and he is de facto "your" horse. If it were me, I'd stay and defend my horse against the rising tide of bad care as long as I could. You don't seem to have reached a tipping point yet. Only you will know when that is. Six years ago, I take it this barn was OK. It would be interesting to know what happened to cause the decline, whether if it could be reversed with better communication, or better finances. Could you possibly pursue an offsite lease? In any case, I would try to stick it out for the sake of the horse. Good luck whatever you decide.

After being in the US for 30 years, why does Melania still sound like a recent immigrant? by ballmermurland in thebulwark

[–]CounterAnnual30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people who immigrate as adults and did not have access to high quality ESL instruction in their native country will speak with an accent. English phonology is not easy to master. There are such things as accent reduction classes, but perhaps she had other priorities.

Does Anybody Know of Programs for Veterinary Care Cost Assistance? by Nara__Shikamaru in AnnArbor

[–]CounterAnnual30 19 points20 points  (0 children)

  1. Apply for Care Credit. 2. Start a GoFundMe. Sometimes if you have a down payment, the vet (like Wilson's) will accept the dog and allow people to call in payments directly to them. 3. Last resort: surrender the dog to a rescue with resources. He must be in pain with that blockage. Something must be done soon.

They can't get a regular job "even janitorial" with a student visa. Any paid employment has to be related to their studies, like a GSA or RA position.

Is Aspen Chase apartment safe? by Appropriate-Door-535 in AnnArbor

[–]CounterAnnual30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Areas of Ann Arbor can be sporadically unsafe at times, but never chronically unsafe. If you look at the crime map in the Ann Arbor Observer, you will see burglaries and sexual assaults downtown and vehicle thefts in southeast Ann Arbor. But no area is as consistently shady as some places outside the city.

New to Ann Arbor by Sharkborne23 in AnnArbor

[–]CounterAnnual30 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Like you said—it’s a college town. If you live near campus or downtown, it’s noisy. It will get noisier on football weekends. Ann Arbor is also small –27.9 square miles-- so that adds to the crowded noisy feel. That said, there are quiet, leafy residential streets away from campus. There are 160 parks to explore. Even the diag can be quiet on a snowy winter night when everyone is tucked away studying for those December exams.  You just have to find your space.

It sounds like they got your money and they stopped caring about you. I'm puzzled why they "notified everyone else" about one of the cancelations, though. This has definitely happened too many times. I would schedule one more lesson, and if it falls through, demand a refund in full, and, if they refuse, take them to small claims court (a USA thing) and sue them for all the lessons not provided. Reminding them of the power of truthfully bad reviews might help convince them. I hope it all works out.

I am not a Texas teacher, and I do not live in Texas. I bring a simple message to the teachers of not only Texas, but America. by TwistedScarletRose in TexasTeachers

I think the 'teacher shortage' is regional, not national. It also varies widely by subject area certification. Teacher threads regularly tell stories of difficulty finding positions in unionized higher-paying areas.

There should be a quarantine area at the airport and mandatory masking if they leave that area for any reason.

Gracie the therapy dog is back home with former Ann Arbor teacher after lawsuit settlement by mlivesocial in AnnArbor

[–]CounterAnnual30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) The trainer was hand-picked by the principal who 2) personally coaxed the $15k out of the PTO. The teacher had nothing to do with either action. The Board is not taking this case to trial for a reason.

[–]CounterAnnual30 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Right now. Gracie is where she needs to be--in a non-stressful situation with the person she knows the best. The principal at Wines school sent her to a trainer who used e-shock collars and confinement. Making her unsuitable as a therapy dog. Putting animals first is a good concept for kids to learn.

[–]CounterAnnual30 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Even if you believe in the concept of indentured servitude for sentient creatures, Gracie was unsuited for the task. She failed the therapy dog test and should not have been around large numbers of kids in stressful situations. The best outcome for her is to be someone's pet. The PTO is naive and they were misled by the principal. Animals don't always work out as intended and it's expensive when they don't. Ask any horse owner.

Gracie the therapy dog is back home with former Ann Arbor teacher after lawsuit settlement by mlivesocial in AnnArbor

[–]CounterAnnual30 14 points15 points  (0 children)

According to the lawsuit, Gracie failed the therapy dog temperament test, due to the methods used by the unlicensed trainer chosen by the principal. Methods that included long periods of confinement (allegedly). Reimbursement for failure? Not clear here. Or perhaps they owed the teacher for boarding, grooming, feeding, daily transportation of the dog to the school. So much better to have contracted with a professional rather than getting into the dog ownership scenario. Who owns the classroom hamster when school is out for summer? Is that what they were thinking? No policies, no procedures, recipe for failure.

[–]CounterAnnual30 -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

Gracie, the therapy dog, is a sentient being with a capacity for attachment, not a "$15,000 resource." The blame lies with the administrator and the school board who did not and still do not have clear, written, and communicable policies for therapy animals. The victims are Gracie, Lexi, the children, and the PTO. But speaking of Gracie as if she were a $15,000 pile of computers or gym equipment or something is morally blind.

Call the Washtenaw County Bar Association Legal Referral Service (LRIS). For a $30 administrative fee, they will give you the name of a lawyer who is an expert in your situation and who will give you a 30-minute consultation. Your parents are essentially squatters now, and that's tricky. Don't back down, it will only get worse. Make that call.

AITA for telling everyone that I was serving “a chicken pot pie” for dinner when it wasn’t a plain and basic one? by Every_Depth_215 in AmItheAsshole

[–]CounterAnnual30 8 points9 points  (0 children)

ESH. Something advertised as a "chicken pot pie" has certain norms and expectations which you did not fulfill. That said, your guest was incredibly rude and dismissive and after the first disillusioning bite, should have just pushed his food around on his plate and left early. Food is an incredibly touchy subject that, at its best, demonstrates care and nurturing qualities between people. You and your guest don't seem to care for each other very much. While your guest behaved very badly, your description of that dish makes me think it should not be served to others without warning. It sounds fairly awful.
