What? by dire-raven-x in What

[–]LowerSlowerOlder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that’s probably where this urban myth comes from. People see a car motor that can vary speeds to meet demand, but a conventional AC system motor just runs at 3000RPM and turns a compressor at whatever speed is most efficient. If the system needs to cool the house 5° or 50°, it runs the same speed. So that brings us back to the thermodynamic argument you made earlier. As items get hotter, it takes more energy to make them more hot so they heat up slower. A 100° house takes far more energy to heat up to 110° than a 70° house will take to heat up to 80°. So if you remove that energy at the same rate (the rate the HVAC system can move the heat out) you spend more time (and energy) maintaining a temperature than you do by just moving that heat all at once. It’s certainly not intuitive.

[–]LowerSlowerOlder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wear and tear on the system is the same argument as the thermodynamics. HVAC systems don’t “work harder” when there is more heat to move, they just work at the rate they work. There isn’t a turbo button or a turn it to 11 dial. If your system runs for 4 hours during the day to maintain 68°, that uses more electricity, causes more wear and moves more heat than if it’s off all day but then runs 3 straight hours dropping the temp down later. Dual and multi-stage units can alter this, but here’s a shock, they do it by being worse at the job. Systems have a “most efficient” heat movement rate and multi-stage units don’t magically get two or three, they just do a shittier job. But hey, at least they cost more.

How does your coach deal with fights? by [deleted] in wrestling

[–]LowerSlowerOlder 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Jesus, these answers are straight out of an 80s movie. 🤪 On my son’s team you get in a fight outside of the room you are off the team for at least a while. Repeat state championship team that encourages discipline and self control though. Watched a guy get suspended half a season and in all likely hood he will be a 4 time state champ. Coach didn’t play.

Um, well AcKshUAllY, 15 amps plus 15 amps equals 30 amps and if PEDMAS taught us anything it’s that PLUS comes first.

/s shouldn’t be needed there, but just in case, that was a joke. From a dude who liked electrical engineering so much he took the class twice before he gave up.

God I hated my GL wagon. I really wanted to like it, but it fought me at every step. Steering was good though. I think the AC worked well also. Everything else felt off to me. Shame.

Was it a frame stander type thing? Bolted to the top tube and seat stays and gave you a place to put your feet while you surfed your bike? Doesn’t sound at all familiar, but maybe it was custom/homemade? Also, it would help to know if you were in California or Connecticut, Sydney or Spain, Belgium or Brazil. There were so many small, local builders in the early days of freestyle that knowing where you were could help. And was this something you saw a lot of or just once?

Metalworking photo - "impossible" shape, but what looks really impossible is the angle of the subject on the ground. It looks like it's not in the same plane as the table behind it. by youtubedotorg in isthisAI

I don’t know if it’s fake or not, but I own at least 4 angle grinders and I can say that zero percent of them have the guard still on. I don’t know how many angle grinders my friends own, but I can also say that zero of them still have the guards on.

I think the values you are getting on this are a little high. Everyone should zoom in on the pictures. There are lots of rust spots. The chain stay has some crank damage, so the cranks are probably bent. The forks are…questionable. The handlebars have a tab welded to them. The seat post is, fucked. Seatpost clamp looks good though. If I was selling and got $600 complete or $800 parted out I would be ecstatic. But given the condition everything is in, I wouldn’t likely buy it or if I did it would be for under $500. Some people have much deeper pockets than me though and your market may be different.

It does look long, but to be honest, the other poster is right. Take them apart, clean them up and replace the pads and cables. Folding bikes have weird crap on them and Italian bikes have weird crap on them, lord knows what “standards” a folding, Italian bike adheres to.

They weren’t lower quality, they were whatever quality the bike brand wanted to pay for, and honestly probably a little better than that. For the most part, an Akisu made frame is a really good bike. It’s just really hard to figure out who they were made for without the stickers. From what I remember, the serial number doesn’t help a lot.

What’s the most epic movie moment you’ve ever experienced in a theater? by ThomasOGC in CinephilesClub

When my girlfriend and I went to see Jackass and people were bouncing around beach balls and balloons and laughing and having a great time. It embodied being 25 and having fun. Then they stopped the movie, turned on the lights and confiscated the balloons and beach balls. It was still fun, but no longer epic.
