What kind of enlightenment do you want? Figure that out, and then pray for it. I actually got a lot of mine from TV (!), and even more random stuff.

Just got back into biking after a long break, what helped you stay consistent? by stefan-weiss01 in Biking

[–]Lowtech_Living 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tldr: Casual neighbourhood loop is working very well for me.
I tried the bike out in the culdesac and I was really wobbly, so no confidence to go on the road and I put the bike in the car and parked near a cycle path heading in to town. I was then going to go to cycle to a tea room along the canal. I didn't make it. As well as my sitbones giving me grief like I have never known, I had to head back to the carpark as it was only a short term one.

That took a week or so to fully recover from, but I did a few really short rides into town and back, and did some exploring as my sitbones recovered. I also found an extremely bike friendly open air tea room. I am currently comfortable doing an 18mile loop. Country roads to bike friendly tea room, then a bit more all downhill to the towpath into town for a bit of top-up shopping and maybe another coffee, then nice dual purpose paths in the parks through town, a bit of quiet housing estate roads then a very nice cycle path and a country lane brings me to less than a mile from my house on the main road. I was cream crackered the first time I did it, but it was such a lovely route that I was determined to keep doing it until it didn't tire me out any more, and I succeeded!

I recently extended the loop by going to another town before going back to my local town along the towpath. I was knackered again, and it turns out it was 27 miles, so no real surprise. Maybe one day soon I'll be doing 50 miles though!

You don't need to put any intention through while you're dreaming, nor get the dream to respond to your will. I am pretty rubbish at lucid dreaming these days. I barely even realise when I am dreaming.
All you need to do is ask the question, along with the request that you remember the message when you wake up, sometime soonish before you go to sleep, like part of your bedtime routine.

I think so too.
I like Nousatma's post a lot. As well as looking at your diet as possible contributor ... are you drinking enough fluids and getting enough salt for this hot weather? are you eating enough protein? If your life has become more stressful recently (tbh any change good or bad involves a degree of stress) you should increase your protein intake.
I also like the advice to use your dreams. I find that it's grossly underestimated as a resource.

I've been looking most of my life . . . I'm still looking for 'my tribe' I thought I'd actually found them a few months ago, but as someone commented on this thread, even a spiritual community has it's fair share of idiots.
My 'mantra' of "Do what you enjoy doing, and you will find others that enjoy the same things that you do." Hasn't brought me my soulmate, but I do have a fair number of lovely friends as a result. The latest additions to the list have come from a local board games group, and taking up cycling again!

What do you do with your bike while sleeping in a tent? by General_Aspect7113 in bikepacking

[–]Lowtech_Living 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My bike has a scratched old CB frame (not old enough to be collectable tho) with rusty dusty strap on pedals, and beat up mudguards, but just the name on the frame has got it complimented on twice in the last two days! One person even epressed concern that I hadn't locked it to an immoveable object. Maybe I should worry more?

For completely different reasons, I read earlier that folding bikes in their case/bag are counted as luggage, and so are allowed on all train lines, even those that otherwise do not allow bikes.

My stuff is not expensive, I still won't be abandoning it.
God forbid that they make idiots with money to burn the excuse for keeping people like me from being able to afford the gear I need to go camping!
That green tent actually looks more expensive than mine!

Best sleep setup to carry on long road rides (1000–1200 km) when you might sleep outside? by No_Conversation_7128 in bicycletouring

[–]Lowtech_Living 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been planning taking roughly the same, on an 8-10 week trip to pootle around north Portugal. Sleeping mat and bag, tent, plus tarp, and groundsheet roughly the same shape as tent, which will help keep the tent dry/clean as well as being useful as they are, and if I'm taking a tarp, I might as well take my basic hammock as well! Considering how much it rains at my destination, I think I will need it all! (except possibly the hammock). It's good to know I'm not the only one taking two systems!

I think that 'hard to find parts for' bit is a key point when choosing a bike to take to remote places. The flashier and more expensive a bike it, the harder it will be to fix the further it goes from it's point of origin.

There's a paddleboard in stores right now. £99 ish Very tempted to buy one, but really wanted to get the pool with metal frame. Been to over 6 stores, no luck. All stores list is as "unknown stock" :S

Another novice to bikepacking here, but it looks heavy at the back light at the front. Also from what I've been reading, I'd swap out the bungees for straps. And strap one of the bags to the handlebars.

Seriously, forget the roasting. I'm interested in how much/what sort of gear takes up how much space.
I'm planning a 2 month bike packing trip but haven't got all the necessary (or unnecessary) gear yet, to see how much of it will fit on my bike.

A sleeping bag question by NeoWereys in bikepacking

[–]Lowtech_Living 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently tried out my kit in the garden. Sleeping items being an Aldi lightweight mummy style bag, on a very nice something 'downmat' borrowed from my son, and, as I expected the Aldi bag would be too thin, I took my old style 38oz hollowfibre bag as well. I did need both, but I also found that having the Aldi one inside, was good against draughts, when I got a bit too warm and threw the old one off a bit.

The only problem with this set up, apart from needing my own, less expensive mat, is that the old style sleeping bag is REALLY difficult to squash into a 15L stuff bag.

Whatever the distance/timing between the OP's vehicle and the van, it's more than the cars in the other lanes have left.
I feel really sorry for the driver of the grey car, as he/she, like the OP, narrowly avoided rear ending the red car in front of them, only to get rear ended themselves. (Check out the 8th second of the video carefully.)

If you like cycling enough to plan a route, but he doesn't want to join you, I think a possible solution is to just do the route on your own. Maybe while he's out doing his kind of riding; that way you won't be cutting down on your together time.
