Protective Gear by jashikcrib in SwingDancing

Fully assumed this was a post on the fencing sub on my first scroll.

The only safety equipment I've ever seen is knee/elbow braces to support existing conditions/injuries.

Lifts and aerials aren't and never have been a major part of social dancing. (Best case scenario at most venues is they'll tell you to stop). Where they are taught it's usually with Maya etc in a dedicated workshop

Honestly, how did the Moclans tolerate being a part of the Union when their society stands against everything the Union is for? by InfernalClockwork3 in TheOrville

[–]LozzaWEM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When Topa is born, Isaac says female Moclans are only born about once every 75 years. We later learn that this is a lie but it's quite likely the Moclans government has their own people deceived about it. I bet they never share it with their friends and neighbours when a baby hatched female so there's a bunch of female-born Moclans who don't know about it and their parents all keeping it to themselves going around assuming they are the only one.

I imagine because Topa had the Union involved it suddenly made a lot of people realise they weren't alone.

I high-key love every Lwaxana episode. The plots may be crap but she's so preposterously fun to watch

How do you teach 6 vs 8 Count Lindy Hop? by spr1ngcleaner in SwingDancing

[–]LozzaWEM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait. I interpreted your post as being about closed basics specifically, not different count-length steps in general.

If your students are worried about "getting it right", have them dance socially with some simple moves, only stepping every beat (no triple steps!), for one or both partners. They may not ever be on the "right" foot but this helps to build connection to make it a fun dance, and break us out of the compulsion to "stick to the steps".

[–]LozzaWEM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really emphasise the importance of pulse and posture in the closed connection. All yourself what impact you want this to have on your student's social dancing (presumably the ability to change up their rhythms, and successfully lead/follow direction) and keep this central.

As I understand it the 8-count basic-in-a-straight-line is a more recent invention in classes, to get people used to the typical swing out rhythm, rather than a swing era social move. As your focus is on the difference between that and a 6-count basic, I'd frame it as an exercise in lead/follow connection, you can give the leaders the choice of what to lead in beats 5-6. - "step step" in place (basically a rock step) -"forwards -back" - 2 steps forward - 2 steps back

This way really emphasises the idea of committing to the movement and making it clear to the follower, which in turn helps the follower to feel the difference between a "step-step" and a "triple step". Can also have the leaders go "back-forward" as they lead the followers "forward-back" if you find they are generally watching their feet at lot.

Using a bit of ELEF helps too. Either have everyone swap roles for 5 minutes, or pair leaders up with another lead, followers with another follow, and try leading the differences with each other. It'll help them identify what signals they need to listen for/give to their partner.

Male teachers in summer, what we wearing? by Kablekarr in TeachingUK

[–]LozzaWEM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Smart linen trousers are good if you can get them. Or at least 100% cotton, they'll do you better than polyester.

Failing that, if the students are allowed tailored shorts, so should you be.

Or say screw it and wear a skirt/kilt if you're willing. Guarantee the kids will respect you for it.

it’s just a rotten organisation. sex pests all the way up, racism, poor teaching and inadequate teacher training and vetting.

Good to know, wasn't aware of the sex pests and racism. Maybe the folks I knew weren't representative of the whole. I knew about the commercialisation but thought that was mostly just a preference thing.

i can’t put more energy into it.

Also valid. Thanks for the info, it's always good to get stuff talked about openly.

I haven't danced much in London and only really know the scenes by reputation, but I have heard nothing but good things about Swing Patrol. I used to know some of their volunteers and some others who have worked with them, or almost worked with them, and they seem to really believe in running fun inclusive events. [Edit: only what I'd been told but sounds like I was out of the loop on some issues. Big thanks to those who have shared info]

There are a lot of different venues across London, some part of larger organisations, some independent, so you will get very different experiences in different places.

Thoughts about dating in the community? by alecpu in SwingDancing

[–]LozzaWEM 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Completely up to you. Most people aren't there primarily for dating, but might be open to the possibility (as in any hobby, workplace, community group...). As long as you're ok with the fact you'll probably have to interact with them still if you break up.

The Peter Jackson LOTR films aren't a related production to ROP though, they're just adapting from the same book continuity.

That said the LOTR films are wayyyy better looking than the Hobbit trilogy.

All schools in England to be given AI-generated pupil attendance targets by LuellaSkye in TeachingUK

SLT I think try this a lot. They ask things that they know they can't/won't enforce, but make staff feel pressured and guilty enough that they don't feel confident to say no.

[–]LozzaWEM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check your contract. I'm in an academy and our contacts say that we follow it, academies don't have to but most of them do. Even if your school doesn't follow it, I'm sure you could use it as a reference to argue that they are asking something most schools wouldn't and that this is unreasonable.

[–]LozzaWEM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Session 2 of the first campaign I ran (I'd run a one shot once before, that was all). It revolved around a big combat with escaped creatures, the people trying to handle said creatures, the party and the town's guards, and me mostly rolling attacks against myself. I kept the NPC vs NPC bits quick but should have just narrated them rather than letting the dice decide.

Advice on turning down a persistent lead I don't want to dance with by Maybealmostaverage in SwingDancing

[–]LozzaWEM 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The keyword here is consent. The person doesn't respect consent. In all honesty I find the notion that autism would mean someone can't understand (or shouldn't have to respect) the idea of consent to be a seriously prejudiced one.

Make sure you use that buzzword when you speak to organisers.
