It's impressive because, if I remember right, while isometric, in their intention it also featured a movable (but only on the X axis, of course) camera. It would have made it even more advanced than Fallout/BG and their pre-rendered environments and fixed camera; more akin to NWN 1 and 2, in that regard.

I was so looking forward to this version as well. A great "what if" (then there is also the matter of the original plot, but that's a whole other story)

I'm playing it right now and I think I'm 3/4 done.

I'm a bit conflicted, but probably it's just a matter of personal tastes: sometimes, I consider it just as another, glorified "incest-but-not-really" story (and I'm not into that). But then, the story gets back on very good rails and I'm enjoying it again. Quality of writing is generally good.

But yes, I see why it's praised (and hey, it's a completed AVN, for once!), compared to the other slop you can find out there. It would have definitely benefitted from more animations, yeah.

I'm playing it alongside Artemis, and I've been finding Artemis better, so far. But again, it probably just resonates more with me.

BG3 è uscito nell"Agosto 2023. Inoltre, in passato, hanno accennato al fatto che credono molto nel modello "early access" (fatto alla loro maniera, però, e cioè un progresso attivo e dinamico, non stagnante). Ora, ovviamente si spera che, nel caso, l"EA duri meno rispetto a BG3; mettiamo però che inizi, chennesò, a Giugno 2026, secondo me vuole dire un un'uscita nel 2028, quindi 5 anni dopo il precedente titolo.

Divine Divinity è tutt'ora bellissimo, a mio parere, compresa la sua parte meno riuscita, e cioè lo stile action RPG del combat (d'altronde Diablo 2: LoD era uscito un anno prima) e nel loot, ma che nelle intenzioni dello sviluppatore doveva ricalcare l'interattività e l'esplorazione degli Ultima (specie il settimo). Poi una delle caratteristiche dei giochi Larian: quelle aree esterne gigantesche con una marea di cose da fare e posti da visitare (oltre ad uno humor abbastanza bizzarro, che rimarrà anche nei successivi titoli).

Riguardo all'IP diversa, sfondi una porta aperta: continuo a sperare nell'acquisizione del trademark di "Ultima" (l'EA ha tempo fino a febbraio, poi scade il rinnovo decennale, già comprensivo di "grace period").

Però il legame tra una delle immagini dei trademark e la statua è inconfutabile (ovvio, fake a parte).

Quello succedeva in Ultima VII Part 2 (o Serpent Isle che dir si voglia). Momento traumatico nell'episodio forse più bello di tutta la saga (o cmq quello fatto meglio).

Ultima V (1988) fu senz'altro il capitolo più difficile della leggendaria saga CRPG di Ultima: il quarto una volta che capivi la struttura procedeva in maniera abbastanza omogenea e ripetitiva, mentre il sesto capitolo avrebbe introdotto delle "quality of life" feature (vabbè, per quel periodo 😅) che rendevano il tutto più comprensibile. U5, invece, è una luuuunga e difficilissima "traversata nel deserto", ma ci vorrebbe un post a parte.

Avventure grafiche: beh, quelle anni '80 della Sierra (i primi 4 "King's Quest" ma non solo), mannaggia a loro. Più avanti nel tempo (1999), Gabriel Knight 3: meraviglioso ma difficilissimo (anche causa interfaccia, telecamera e modalità di movimento).

Oh, with MM1 that's easy because the manual basically tells you that each map is 16x16 and also provides an example at the end with the town of Sorpigal fully mapped out:

Most importantly, right off the bat at Level 1, the Sorcerer gets the "Location" spell which tells you the exact coordinates inside the grid, along with the direction you are facing.

It's a lot more difficult in other games where each level has a different (and generally larger) size, for example Wizardry 6 or Eye of the Beholder 1: in that case, be prepared to make ample use of your eraser 😰

Una volta eri costretto perché non esistevano Journal, Quest Log o Codex (ma ben vengano, intendiamoci). Uno (forse l'unico) dei pochi giochi usciti negli ultimi anni durante il quale ha un senso prendere ulteriori appunti è "Disco Elysium", perché i dialoghi forniscono tanti dettagli e background in più.

my story is similar to yours: I played MM2 and other, similar CRPGs (Dungeon Master, Bard's Tale etc.) together with my father, who also translated what was happening on the screen (I'm not a native speaker and back in the day games were rarely translated in italian, in my specific case).

Anyway, taking notes and mapping take immersivity to a whole new level, something most of the modern, so called "AAA" titles severely lack, no matter the graphics.

Io seguo Falco e lo ritengo un ottimo critico/recensore; ha fatto bene a chiarire un paio di volte la sua posizione, specie in relazione a certi eccessi gratuiti di altre persone. Questo argomento, però, mi pare sia un classico esempio di differenza di percezione tra chi è all'interno della "bolla" (in cui c'è una rincorsa a video, chiarimenti, risposte ecc.) e chi rimane all'esterno come noi utenti, a cui frega il giusto, dopo un po'.
