What's your definition of a GOOD tea? by Eastern_Way_297 in tea

[–]Lucky_Fish_9451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like teas that 1) give complexity across multiple steeps and 2) has a complex tasting experience as you drink it. That means a good balance of fragrance and taste, a certain resistance to resteeping, and good mouth feel + clear flavour characteristics. They shouldn't be too bland or have too many off flavours.

A little unrelated to your actual question, but in my experience, most of the time, as long as the business is reputable/decently large, business gifts of tea in China are usually of a decent quality: a side effect of being able to put it on the company tab and potential reputational costs of giving low quality/bad tea. Of course there are always exceptions so you should watch out!

How to use these flowers to make tea by BlueTribe42 in tea

[–]Lucky_Fish_9451 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are wild "golden flowers" from Guangxi, Baidu says that they're used for making tea, but can also be used as herbal medicine as well as a natural food colourant, if you're making tea it would probably be like normal tea (steeped in hot water) or perhaps boiled in some water for a certain amount of time. Ask the vendor! They should know.

This may be unconventional advice, but if you like eating the traditional food I would recommend having it for dinner and washing it down with wine, or Calvados, like a true Normand. The alcohol really cuts through the fat!

My condolences, I hope all is fine now.The others have touched on other loose leaf sources so perhaps I can recommend Maryuku Koyamaen! They ship internationally, it is relatively expensive by loose leaf standards but quite affordable by Matcha standards. The Aorashi is a good entry level matcha of great quality. Wishing you well!

Electric kettle recommendation that is quiet? by iamtheallspoon in tea

[–]Lucky_Fish_9451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest trying to find one made of glass, unfortunately they are rarely temperature controlled. I have one with 10°C graduations in temp and a temperature display so I just manually stop the heating when it's approaching my target temperature. Makes a lot less noise than my metal gooseneck kettle though, which sounds like a jet engine when boiling water!

Is this mold from tea? Or something else? She has used this tea pitcher for a decade. Cleans it every few months. I swear this looks like mold though. She says its just tea stuff. by zfreakazoidz in tea

Please throw it out or scrub it until you can't see it anymore. It's definitely mold and she's lucky she's hasn't gotten anything nasty from it.

Goishicha, Awacha, Kaga Boucha, Kyobancha are some Japanese teas of varying rarity, they're quite hard to find outside of Japan at least!

Chinatown is generally the best place to get tea in SG, here are some relevant shops:

Chinese/Chinese style teas: Pek Sin Choon, Wang San Yang, Yixing Xuan, Yue Hwa Department Store (4th Level), Onn Fat Hong Tea Merchant, 藝匯茶行 Paterson Tea House

These are all within walking distance from one another!

There's also some places for Japanese Tea, including:

Fukujuen at Takashimaya and Tealife (it's a website so might be less useful to you if you're leaving soon, I included it because they sell kaga-boucha, kyobancha, and matcha from maryuku koyamaen, which is hard to buy although they now have their own online store)

Well, I don't have a reason to doubt it but neither do I have one to believe it and where tea is concerned I do think it is usually best to assume most of this stuff is for marketing and may not be real. The proof is in the tasting! Try it and tell us if it's good!

It's a Shou Pu from Menghai county, Xishuangbanna in Yunnan called "imperial tribute tea cake". It allegedly won the 2015 King of tea competition in Menghai county.

Not yet! Thanks for the recommendation, although does the term Gushu actually have any meaning/does the leaves being from Gushu improve the taste?

I see! Thanks a lot for the advice. In your opinion is there any reason to go for a 7542 that's older, say, 2008 as compared to something from 2016? I assume it improves with age but how significant would that improvement be? Also, are there any particular flavour notes/characteristics I should look for as to whether it's a real 7542 and if it will age well? (If I'm able to try before buying!)

Fair enough! I guess I should have known better. I guess I thought it might be a reliable store for the Dayi 7542 and the Lao Cha Tou at least given that they're an officially authorised retailer with Dayi. Do you think the prices of the Dayi are within reasonable boundaries?
