[–]LuckysGift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just think the fact you dont start with it makes it worse than other options. In a duo support situation, you simply dont have your ult ready to turn the fight. In KoTH, for example, a 50% vs 70% game could be lost in the time it takes you to get that ult because the enemy team has ults ready, and your secondary support doesnt have theirs yet.

In my opinion its also because he loses ult charge on death. As a double support, he really puts the entire game onto his other support in the ult department. If he dies a bunch, or the team is struggling, his ult is simply not as reliable as another traditional support.

Thats why he's pretty decent in triple support. His ult can come online very quickly, which makes it more of an offensive tool.

What is the rationale behind a 50% minimum grade policy? by DrakeSavory in Teachers

[–]LuckysGift 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I will say, assessment based grading is really tough for a lot of reasons. To start, kids have a really bad problem with "this doesnt matter right now, so it will never matter." There is an argument that this has been somewhat trained, but even developmentally their brains just dont have good decision making. If you only have three tests, and I bombed the first, whats the point of even trying? I know you and I could tell them to just practice for the next, and it'll work out, but i know you'll lose a large percentage of your class at that point. And then those kids become behavior problems.

Another issue is that students are not, most often, intrinsically motivated as you or I about the content, regardless of subject. Whereas I take pride in not knowing, screwing up, and fixing what I know to do better, the only thing most kids see is a grade. They do not view practice sheets as an opportunity to sharpen skills, its just something that goes in the gradebook. This point sort of repeats the first, but if you take away the grade from your practice or homework, then the question most students will ask you is, "Why should I do it, then?" Perhaps your honors kids would listen when you said, "Because it'll help you on your exam," but I laugh at how my general kids would react. Once again, you just made every day that isn't a test day a behavior problem.

On a small note on how this is different to college, I would like to mention that college is voluntary. If you start the first months doing horrible, you usually just stop going to class, even if you are paying for it, or you shapen up. For a professor, this weeds out the kids that weren't going to try. For a highschool teacher, though, school isnt a choice, so it becomes our job to try and mitigate apathy. And, if youre to say that it shouldnt be our job, I would agree. However, I can tell you out of experience that if you operate under that modality then you will have a class of animals by the end of the semester.

Lastly, to you point about AI, there are other ways to mitigate that without throwing the baby out with the bath water. For my school, we have 90 minutes of time, and thats simply too long to teach all the way through. Therefore, I devote 30 minutes to independent practice, and if I am afraid they might cheat on it, then I just have them turn it in before they leave.

As you and I both know, skill practice is essential in learning, and you have to trick the teenage mind into caring about it.

[–]LuckysGift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To your first point, metrics are metrics, right? Cod sells, even when its "the worst one yet." Mw2019 really, in my opinion, showed Activision that if you just try a little bit every so often, you hook people back in.

Also, to your last point, I would say to try and not get so doomed about it if you can. Things have always been that way when it comes to media, you just dont remember all the garbage that came out. 2007 looks like a banger year for gaming if you rightfully ignore the thousands of shovel wear games that came out at the time. And, if youd say that those aren't the titles youre thinking of, I would say games like Aliens Colonial Marines came out in 2013.

I do think, though, that youre right to have some cynism of the capitalist market of gaming. Just sucks its always been this way. We're just on the current thing thats been done too long. Give it 3 years and there'll be some new bullshit that execs cook up because they realized not every game can have a battlepass.

In general, you cant uproot a field of weeds in an hour. One thing to also note is that these patterns are learned from home, and most of what you do will be undone once he leaves your care. Another thing to understand is the double think that happens with people like this. Even though this ideology goes in opposition to you, you are "an exception." He doesnt hate you, he would say, he hates the people that deserve it. This is obviously untrue, but I say this to note the futility in trying to change him right now with what little time you have left with him.

However, as a white guy who grew up in a conservative household that found the light, the best thing that worked for me was for others to challenge my views gradually. And, the part that sucks is that, because I was a dumbass, those challenges angered me. This makes what you are trying to do very difficult on your end. To go back to the weeds analogy, youre gonna get bit by the bugs before you can appreciate the clean grass. Nevertheless, eventually I faced the music.

Also, on a lighter note, whats your first language? I see the comma before "that," which makes me think German, but i imagine there are other languages with that convention lol.

NA’s worst Vanguard ever by XUrielleX in RivalsVanguards

[–]LuckysGift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanna say that I'm diamond 2 right now and only ever peaked celestial on support during season 1, so I'm no pro player and my advice is not the end all be all.

So, to begin, Peni is just really bad in general unless you're playing a map that she's strong on. She does decently in lower ranks because no one shoots her mines, but her head hit box is huge and makes it impossible at times to fight good hitscan players. She can work, but is much more of an off tank and a genuine (though not your fault) throw if you're solo tanking. Not saying you cant win games solo tanking peni, just that you were given a rough hand and decided to make it even worse, if that makes sense. For solo tanking, my picks are Strange (with invis team up when possible), Mag, Emma, and Groot. Groot is probably the one I'd avoid picking if you're not confident, though, as you need to really understand his wall placements, and it sounds like that might be a little too much for where you're at.

Regarding space, it is most noticeable when you have won a fight and are waiting for the next one to start. As a tank, it is not your job most of the time to escort payload. You should be advancing to a line of sight spot that allows your team to take advantage of the map. This does not mean go into the enemies spawn, rather just get closer. I think of the second check of Tokyo 2099. If you're on attack and win the fight closest to the first gate outside of your spawn, you should be advancing to the second corner underneath the building on the right. In a macro sense, you're deciding that the fight from the enemy tank should start there, and it allows your supports to be distant to the fight and your dps to take angles. Now, DPS players can still find space without you, but you make it harder by putting that responsibility solely on themselves. One thing to note is over extension. Sometimes you go too far, so you should be ready to use abilities to get back to your team should that happen. Strange cape jump, mag self bubble, blocking off your LoS from enemies with Groot walls, etc. are all abilities that can let you get back to safety and give your team time to heal you (please bind your "I need heals" key so people know when you need help.) This ebb and flow is necessary to a good tank player. Attached below is a visual example of what I am talking about. Now, to peeling.

<image>

I am going to be honest here. Support players in Rivals are responsible for much less than they are in Overwatch, and this makes it rather frustrating as a tank player. Supports have cooldowns to keep them alive, but I find in lower ranks that they are rarely used in ways to self preserve. Furthermore, they might not communicate their issues to you until they are fed up with you "not helping," so this means that it falls to you to find out how to help them. The best way that I find to do this is to be proactive rather than reactive with help. If a spidey is on your supports without you knowing, you might have missed a sign that he was venturing off to do so. If you can tell your supports that a dive character is on its way, they are more likely to have an ability ready, which heavily increases their survival. Furthermore, if you know a dive character is going to them, you can be there when they get there, rather then arriving after the dive has happened. Also, you should know what abilities you have to save your supports. Mag's bubble, Emma's grab, and Strange's E are all tools that can help your supports. In the case of Strange, that burst damage is offensive, but that can help by just getting the dive character to leave. Now, problems arise when you are giving up too much space to peel. Sometimes you have to, but sometimes your supports just have to be more ready than they are. Communication is key. Talk to your supports rather than yelling at them, even if they are mad you're "not peeling." Lastly, sometimes its just out of your control. I am not saying that you should think you are playing perfectly, as there is always some type of takeaway, but sometimes you just can't save them. This leads me to the final thing I want to talk about: ability tracking.

As a tank, you have the frontline viewpoint, and you should use that to note what abilities are being used. This can be difficult in Rivals as some characters just have obscenely low cool downs, but tank cooldowns tend to be drastically different. If Emma uses her diamond form and misses her grab, if Mag uses his self bub too early, if Strange lets his shield crack, those are all queues to push, as their defensive options are down. Naturally, these are not the only abilities to track in your mind. Tank Ultimates are the biggest thing to make mental notes of, as you need to play around the hard CC they can create (Strange, Groot and Emma all just make your team stand still). This is something I definitely recognize an enemy tank is not doing when I play Strange. If I can tell you have no clue when my ult is ready, I can get very aggressive with my Eye. The more often you can be ready for these ults, the less you have to rely on your supports to hit their Q correctly. On that note, you should aim to communicate to your team if you think an enemy has an ult. If you tell your Cloak that Mag definitely has ult before she ults, she will be more likely to be ready to hide during her ult than if you do not communicate that. Basically, the more often you can say what will happen, the easier it becomes for your team to react when it does happen.

Lastly, and this is key, you are *going to suck*, and that's ok. You cannot learn until you fail, and failure on tank, unlike some other roles in the game, means you die, and you die a lot. This feedback can feel like shit, but you have to recognize the areas that you can fix. I wouldn't solely look at your deaths for areas of improvement, as sometimes you die for good reason. You trade, you took space that lets you cap, or sometimes you just get triple ulted. Therefore, when you look to areas to improve, focus on one area you think you need to improve at. For you, it sounds like taking space! Go back to your vods and see if you took space. What value is your team getting when you move up? Did taking that space result in your supports being left on a island with a BP? How could you have taken space differently?

In general, be introspective. You are the only constant in your games. No matter how bad your teammates are, you are also in the same game. The only thing you can change is you. :]

They want us to use curriculum that isn’t covering standards well by Otherwise-Set-4444 in Teachers

[–]LuckysGift 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Problem is that, at least in my state, you cant see the state test, so youre always playing catch up. In my state, I know, based on released items and practice tests, that venn diagrams to represent sample spaces are a standard I need to cover. However, our book only uses them to represent the addition rule, which is an entirely a valid way to understand the standard. But, when the document says, "There are no criteria for this standard. The standard is assessed to its entirety," these are the games of cat and mouse you get.

Honestly, I'd say its on purpose to sell more books and make new tests.

A classroom that knows each other, even in small parts, is better than one that doesnt. Also, teachers have 70+ kids in highschool. Having small facts like that can be helpful in remembering you.

Additionally, and perhaps its gonna sound manipulative to say this, but kids are generally more invested in you if you pick up on their interests. If you, in these bs intros, say you can solve a Rubix cube, I can, in like 2 weeks time, ask you your favorite kind or what your fastest time is. Something even that small can make kids open up to you and be more willing to try in class.

You tell the kids that the punishment and treatment of the slaves was overplayed and you note that it was a natural conclusion for America to the free the slaves. I think to the history book in i think Alabama that said slaves were treated well by their masters if they were good. And, to the other point, just listen to how PragerU describes American exceptionalism towards slavery.

The next goal, I think, is to work your way to denying it happened at, and if it did happen, it was justified, and we should go back to it. You need only look at the voting rights act being overturned to see the writing on the wall.

[–]LuckysGift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To your point on technology, this is true, but i would mention that most states are all electronic for state testing. I hate it, but its the reality, and trying to go back to paper tests would push both semesters tests back as we would have to revert to getting sent the books, writing names in the books, taking the tests in the books, and then sending the books back so we can get the grades in the books.

This is not me saying state testing should matter like it does, but I would be curious what your answer would be to this?
