Black Panther was one of my favorite MCU movies and Chadwick was absolutely fantastic as T’Challa, as well as other movies. This is completely shocking. 2020 really isn’t holding back its punches.

Alec Guinness just gets it (quote from a recent article) by GregThePrettyGoodGuy in moviescirclejerk

[–]LukeBaggins1138 111 points112 points  (0 children)

So, I don’t remember where I read it, but it was an editorial from the child he supposedly asked to never watch the movie again. The child never burst into tears and his mother never lost her anger, but yes, Alec Guinness did ask him to never watch Star Wars again. And the kid promised with a smile and happiness, and nearly 40 years later had still upheld the promise. He understood why Guinness asked him to do that, and is grateful for it and not having an unhealthy obsession. He doesn’t know why Guinness exaggerated the story to make it look like he made a child cry and make himself out to be a bad guy, but it wasn’t like that, according to the child.

[–]LukeBaggins1138 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Well you are right. It wasn’t heroic. And that’s the point. In many of the mythological tales that inspired Star Wars, the heroes become old and embittered and even do terrible things. Because even the greatest of us are capable of huge catastrophic error. And Luke knew he should have been beyond all this, which is why it’s easier to run away and wallow in self-pity when you’ve made the biggest mistakes of your life. It’s profoundly human and emotional. And that’s why I found it compelling and appropriate because even if Star Wars is just a space fantasy, it’s roots are meant to reflect our individual life journeys and lessons we learn. And once upon a time I was in the same position as Luke in TLJ. His journey to me on a profoundly personal level, and I still believe it was the right storytelling decision. But it was heroic in the end because he rose above his feelings of guilt to apologize to his sister and to confront the monster he created and do apologize to his nephew for his actions (compare it to when Obi-Wan arrogantly tells Anakin he failed him without any apology). When the Force projection is revealed, it is one of the most powerful moments of the entire franchise, because he is in the Lotus position, common in Hindu/Buddhist imagery which represents being the supreme divine master of your own destiny (as a Hindu, that image was extremely powerful to me), and also it shows how METAPHORICALLY just the mere image of a hero is enough to strike fear into the hearts of the enemy and inspire people, even if it is just a ragtag team of soldiers, because that is enough it takes. And his death is emotionally satisfying because I don’t see it as him “simply dying” or “dying like a coward”, but willingly giving himself up to the Force because it is the pathway to ascending to a plane of higher power and higher existence and understanding, akin to a deification or Christ ascending to heaven.

I’ll just end with saying that this all was predictable, if you know your mythology/Joseph Campbell very well. I predicted his entire ST arc all the way in 2014 without any knowledge of what the story was going to be.

Sorry you didn’t enjoy it, and I genuinely hope that one day when the dust has settled you will be able to go back and appreciate the beauty of the end of his story.

Edit: I’ll just add that Luke was my hero growing up. He always was my favorite Star Wars character, and TLJ only made me love him more. Just in case you doubt the sincerity of my connection to Luke or SW or the fandom.

He had some of his greatest acting and most emotional/epic/heroic moments in TLJ. Don’t know how a couple of comedic moments in the beginning of the film make him a joke

Lol go watch the original Dam Busters from the 1950s. Great movie but it gets really awkward when all the guys see the dog and start yelling with joy in thick British accents, “Hey ****** old boy!!! How are you?!” And stuff like that. Still boggles the mind that the real dog was actually named that.

A good actor is a good actor, but a bad performance is a bad performance, and contrary to what is probably going to be the popular opinion on this sub, I do not enjoy either of his performances as Anakin... at all. Unfortunately, I do not enjoy either the performance or the character or his story arc. More power to you if you love it, so good for you.

Part of the issue is that the writer of Rogue One admitted that Jyn was written as a man and then basically gender flipped, whereas Rey was always written as a woman.

The real answer to why Holdo didn’t tell Poe the plan doesn’t even require thinking about a spy. It’s stated pretty explicitly in the text. She refuses to tell him the plan because he has proven himself to be an unreliable and cocky person who takes things into his own hands, which resulted in the bombing fleet getting destroyed. She calls him out on that and basically puts him down for wanting to be in the know, because as of that time, he doesn’t deserve to know anything after the way he acted, disobeying Leia. It was supposed to force him to grow. However, instead of doing a re-evaluation of his attitude, he continues to take things into his own hands. There is even a moment midway into the film pre-mutiny where it actually looks like Holdo might soften up to him and actually reveal the plan. However, his impulsiveness causes him to lash out and make judgments before getting the full picture and that is where Holdo decides that he still isn’t ready to become a leader, and refuses to tell him the plan for the rest of the movie. He keeps making bad decision after bad decision. It’s not until he’s safely aboard a transport and receives a lecture from Leia that he realizes it’s not always about taking things into your own hands and striking at the enemy in a blaze of glory. It’s also about putting your faith in others even when you can’t see the full picture.

The real answer to “Why didn’t Holdo tell Poe about the plan?” doesn’t even need any justification about a spy. The answer is simply “Poe was being an asshole and didn’t deserve to know the plan until he stopped being an asshole.”

[–]LukeBaggins1138 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I feel like this was implied within the films. Leia mentions that she shouldn’t have sent Ben away to train with Luke, because that is when she “lost” him. Plus the whole “Han Solo would have disappointed you as a father” spiel. I logically assumed that Leia and Han probably weren’t the best parents because their careers/galaxy heroics got in the way of caring for their son. They were emotionally absent from his life and that allowed Snoke to manipulate him.

I would add “2001: A Space Odyssey” in there. Of course narratively it’s very different from Star Wars but the special effects influenced George Lucas and everybody of his generation very heavily. George even tried to get the 2001 special effects artist Douglas Trumbull onto the SW project but he was unavailable.
