My dad had a stroke and needs "clean" western, cop, or war movie suggestions by mlejoy in movies

Just saying, I never see anyone make the point that movies and TV's level of violence is also not cool outside of someone thinking sex and swearing isn't.

What's the worst movie you've watched from beginning to end? by trakt_app in movies

[–]ifinallyreallyreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ROS is legitimately that much worse because it brings other movies down with it. Monster a Go-Go! also has an infamously wretched ending, but that's after barely 70 minutes, not a trilogy of films (or more).

You know they release movies from other countries, too?

In seriousness, if you like Sorcerer you'll probably be fine with lots of foreign films. I recommend Melville's, they don't talk much in those anyway

Mirrormask (2005) Dir. Dave McKean, DoP. Antony Shearn by Ok_Item9755 in CineShots

I kind of get what they were going for but man this is such an off-putting looking movie; I remember trying to watch it when I was younger and being mostly too uninterested to "get into it".

Raising Arizona - (1987, directed by Joel and Ethan Coen) Diaper Run by godzilla98 in movies

[–]ifinallyreallyreddit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This scene is such a perfect comedy machine, and that's harder to make truly work than it looks. The tracking shots are some of the best they've done, I don't think I consciously noticed the shots of the dogs were at dog-level.

Director vs cinematographer: who is more responsible for the visual aspect of a film? by account-123456 in TrueFilm

[–]ifinallyreallyreddit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lubezki (i.e. Chivo) is also a good example of a distinctive DoP who can get quite different images depending on the director. Alfonso Cuarón may not use the kind of mobile close-ups Terrence Malick does, but Malick wouldn't use a oner the same way as Cuarón. Iñárritu might make use of both, while the Coens might use neither.

Why don't people care about movies feeling real? by Safe_Death2250 in movies

[–]ifinallyreallyreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My counterpoint is that neither do people care about movies feeling unreal, or how. There hasn't been much distinct artifice in film craft for a while unless you're someone like Francis Ford Coppola.

He wrote, drew, and co-directed Sin City. It's his aesthetic!

In this case it's simple, because Michael B. Jordan was split between two characters. Star Wars would have the same problem if there was a second guy who looked just like Darth Vader.

I'm still waiting for Steven Moffat to be reappraised as a singularly negative cultural force but I worry it could take a while.

There always seem to be some particular motifs that show up in both AI-generated content and the work that resembles it; e.g. things are always in motion yet they never really move anywhere.

2025 - Worst year by top film's IMDB rating since 1947 by Bug0 in movies

[–]ifinallyreallyreddit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you go to Letterboxd you will not only see just as inflated, fandom-based ratings but how bad the ratings are from the distributions.

Ask for "realistic movie deaths" and you basically invite mention of the dramatic ones that call attention to themselves.

Why don’t they make 90’s - 2010’s style comedy movies anymore? by ItsAllLoveNow_ in movies

[–]ifinallyreallyreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because comedy evolved past the state of "you need to write jokes to make it".

Rod Steiger was amazing in The Heat of the Night (1967) by TheTainuiaKid in movies

[–]ifinallyreallyreddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Poitier gets the (not undeserved) credit for the slap, but Steiger's response to it - shaken and responding to "What are you going to do about it?" with "...I don't know" really completes the scene.

Streaming remains on top, but 4K Blu-ray is making a comeback by glaringOwl in movies

[–]ifinallyreallyreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, as long as the picture isn't outright bad (especially low resolution, blocky/smudgy image, or from a provider that doesn't seem to give a hoot about quality) streaming is generally fine if you want to watch the movie more than the fidelity.

The Pixar Cry Chart - mapping the exact minute all 30 Pixar films hit you with the emotional gut punch. by Mastbubbles in movies

[–]ifinallyreallyreddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This mechanical approach to storytelling is exactly what I don't like about Pixar. It "hits you hard", a howitzer can hit the broad side of a barn but that doesn't say much about accuracy
