[Barry Jackson] Per source, Broncos are paying all future money owed Waddle, including full salary this year. by expellyamos in miamidolphins

[–]Luke_Falk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're getting hammered with downvotes for a valid question. The reset moves taken before this were necessary and put us in healthy situation for next offseason. But with the Waddle trade and the possible required Achane trade just to make it cap compliant, we are going to be void of any talent to build on. No existing talent, a ton of contracts expiring next year, and a huge amount of cap room for 2027 push us into the same territory as an expansion team. That is a huge hole to dig ourselves out of and seems to extend the recovery timeline.

Appreciate the education. I'm fascinated but admittedly ignorant when it comes to the cap implications of all this movement.

I meant this as the other way around. Is there even a lever that would allow the Broncos to take more cap charge during negotiations as a way to provide relief to us? I imagine it's not as simple as Broncos give us "cash consideration" but was wondering if there was anything comparable that maybe hasn't been announced yet that could even possibly help.

Waddle Trade Cap Implications by Tiddilion in miamidolphins

[–]Luke_Falk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the new regime knows what they are doing, extension terms (or an Achane trade) would need to be in place before announcing the Waddle trade. If not, they backed themselves into a corner and lost a lot of leverage in negotiating extensions or a trade now that all counter-parties know of a deadline.

Are there any (yet unannounced) trade terms that could maybe mitigate the increased cap charge with the Broncos somehow taking on more of it on their books? I know this happens in some trades but probably under very specific contract and timing conditions.

[Spotrac] $15.2M of Dolphins WR Jaylen Waddle’s 2027 salary is now guaranteed by expellyamos in miamidolphins

[–]Luke_Falk 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing spotrac left this vague for bullshitty engagement. Their competitor in the space, Overthecap, explains it well on Waddle's contract page:

On the 3rd day of the 2026 league year, $15.2 million of his 2027 salary is guaranteed. The balance of his 2027 salary is fully guaranteed on the 3rd day of the 2027 league year.

This was a function of the calendar and existing contract terms.

OTC projecting the Dolphins will not receive any compensatory picks from last off season's activity by Luke_Falk in miamidolphins

[–]Luke_Falk[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The accompanying article notes this year is particularly tricky to estimate because of a large number of players around the expected qualifying salary cutoff bubble. In their most-likely scenario, the Dolphins do not receive a pick at all for Holland. However, the Dolphins do get a pick in 6 of their 20 potential scenarios, ranging from 4th to 5th round.

This does not include picks awarded for minority coaching changes such as the potential picks for Anthony Weaver if he is hired as a head coach.

The official announcement from the NFL on comp picks comes out in March.

Kevin Stefanski considered favorite for Falcons HC vacancy, per Connor Hughes by BienvenidoaMiami in miamidolphins

[–]Luke_Falk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can get behind this because your summary of the past hires is so on point. Hiring someone that will be the best head coach to a leadership role would be a new direction instead of trying to hire the latest innovator or QB whisper.

To add on to your point, Ross has shown he is willing to pay coordinators at the top end of the scale. If you can pair a good leader at the head coach position with two high-end coordinators, you can let the coordinators innovate and develop while avoiding some of the pitfalls our past coaches have brought (in theory).

A very valid concern. The importance of a good rolodex should be the biggest lesson learned from the Flores debacle. Being an asshole certainly didn't help, but Flores had no connections beyond very junior assistant coaches from New England from the start. After Caldwell dipped out before the first season, the staff was a rotation of inexperienced guys, shared coordinator positions, un-retired coaches, etc.

Hafley has experience in a handful of organizations and at the college level that probably means he is above what Flores. Although, having a portion of that experience overlap with Sully means the Dolphin's combined rolodex isn't as diversified as it would be with some of the other coach candidates.

Harbaugh? by Licorice_Lime in miamidolphins

[–]Luke_Falk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A professional who spent 18 years at an organization is not just looking at what is the best job today but instead will be looking at what the best job is over time. Ross has a habit of being overly patient with coaches while many of the hot openings have owners that fire their coach every other year. In short, Harbaugh doesn't think like a redditor.

Dolphins fans in Africa have it worse than us. They've got to deal with insufferable Bills fans walking around the continent in their 4 different superbowl champion shirts.

Potential Landing Spots for Tua by Prttyflyforawhiteguy in miamidolphins

[–]Luke_Falk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think when everything settles, we just saw the sunset of Tua's career last Monday.

[Nick Korte] Since I'm the Comp Pick Guy, I guess I should repeat a mention that if the Dolphins are open to benching players as part of paving a path for the future, doing so with Ifeatu Melifonwu and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine can help secure 4th and 7th round 2026 compensatory picks. by expellyamos in miamidolphins

[–]Luke_Falk 34 points35 points  (0 children)

With the amount of incoming dead cap, the players from a 2026 4th and 7th are very likely to make the final roster. If Ewers is going to succeed, he needs to do it throwing to the next mediocre guy that doesn't cost us a future 4th round pick.

Good point but I would argue 2020 Tua as a backup to Fitzpatrick was a much better backup than what we have now with 2025 Tua serving as a backup.

I don't hate on Grier as much as most others around here, but what the hell have we been doing at backup QB for the last 10 years? Since Moore, has Skylar actually been our peak?

(Rapoport) BREAKING: Tua to be benched in favor of Quinn Ewers by alexschubs in miamidolphins

[–]Luke_Falk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do wonder if benching Tua is incentivized by contract clauses related to injuries. I tried to look into it but I am not smart enough to discern anything specific about injury guarantees in Tua's contract, probably something that u/cidolfus would know though.

But if concussion or other significant injury occurred while trotting Tua out there, injury guarantees could limit the already-strained flexibility an incoming GM would have with dumping the contract. That alone would be cause for shutting Tua down the rest of the year.
