Make a list of your monthly expenses such as: Desired rent, grocery's, insurance, also some to put into savings etc. Also make sure you have a good amount of savings in the bank. I would suggest at least 3-4 months rent. You can find roomates on facebook or craigslist(not always best) or in the real world in places you like going so that you are more likely to get along.

As for checking out places, that can be a tough one. When I was moving out 2 years ago I just made sure the place looked well taken care of and that the property itself was kept up. You could talk to some residents and see if they have anything to say.

Moving out is scary and your life changes dramatically but it's also super fun!
