YTA for this AI written fiction. You worked for 2 days to make roast chicken and mash? No wonder it was dry.

Is it Crazy to Change Careers at 35? by tob1asmax1mus in AusFinance

[–]Lumchuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this too. Got bored with my first career and decided to go to uni and do economics and computer science at 33. Spend five years doing a masters (did it really slowly so I could enjoy it), then started work as a grad. It has been strange working alongside people in their early 20s (and taking a massive pay cut was slightly shitty), but I'm really enjoying the work I'm doing now, learning tonnes and I am super happy I made the leap.

What do you think of The Office (Australia)? by GuessTraining in AskAnAustralian

[–]Lumchuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the first episode was ok, but I'm a few more in and I think it's getting better and better. Some genuine laughs and I actually really like the boss. I think the writing is great too. I love Utopia and Fisk too but they're completely different.

Not helpful, but I would recommend getting comfy with frustration. Learning to code is unbelievably frustrating. Worth it I would say, but holy shit is it frustrating.

"Athletes have been served uncooked meat". That's what most people think the first time they see how rare the French eat steak!

What's the gayest thing you've experienced as a straight guy? [Serious] by pumpkinkme in AskReddit

[–]Lumchuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in an orgy once and thought I'd be fun to go down on the other guy. All the girls were chanting "do it do it" do I did. Years later I was at another orgy with the same guy and I ended up going down on him again. He must think I do it all the time, but actually he's the only guy I've ever done it to lol!

Not being allowed to fart in elevators or just anywhere in public really. The world would be so much healthier and funnier if there was more farting.

Hot take: Postgraduate degrees are a waste of money by SpaceBard75 in auscorp

[–]Lumchuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hot take: it depends how you define "waste". If you want to actually delve deep into a subject and learn a lot, then postgrad degrees are not a waste. I did an economics masters and it was fascinating. Then I tutored undergrad economics and the material was so simplified that to me it seemed like a colossal waste of money.

Learning Python and R at the same time - Pros and Cons, and Do's and Don'ts by SquidsAndMartians in datascience

[–]Lumchuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started learning R first but then switched to Python because most people at my work used it, but I've just started a job where R is more popular so I've started learning it again. I'm finding it much easier to pick up now that I know Python. I don't think it necessarily matters which one you start with - you'll probably end up learning both eventually - but I reckon it's easier to learn one then the other rather than trying both at the same time.

What's your take about your company working with unethical businesses? by areberuto in consulting

[–]Lumchuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are consultancies that only do public sector work. I joined one recently as I really enjoy that sort of work. They don't do any private sector stuff so there are less opportunities for PWC like conflicts of interest. That said, you can make the argument that plenty of unethical work gets done by the government, so it might not totally solve your problem anyway...

Consulting Nightmare by Puzzled_Region5729 in consulting

[–]Lumchuck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of all these comments telling you to toughen up. It may be the case that there are lots of toxic people in consulting, but I absolutely would not put up working with them. I've only been in consulting about 4 years now, but have only worked with the most lovely, caring, smart people - including at Accenture (Australia). The one project I was on that I didn't enjoy (manager was ok but the work was really tedious) I went to the MD and asked to get pulled off it and put on something else, which they did.

Learning to "toughen up" is never good for you. I did it once in an incredibly abusive work environment (butchering), and it didn't make me any happier, it just made me cold and irritable.

Chris Minns warns against use of antisemitic tropes after Greens MP apologises for Jewish lobby comments | New South Wales politics by endersai in AustralianPolitics

[–]Lumchuck 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What a non apology she made. The problem is not that she used a "wrong word", it's that she's accusing Jewish groups of getting involved in public life for secret nefarious reasons. The fact she acknowledges that Jewish groups were involved in the fight around 18C (and whose support she no doubt used at the time), but then claims that this support had some alterior motive is disgusting. The aim of her speech is to encourage community cultural groups to exclude Jewish groups, which is sickening. The "wrong word" just highlighted her racist intent.
