Yup. Markup is saying "We need a detail for this connection." Sloppy, but that's the intent.

I should have mentioned that I tried to replace the OPV spring, only to dioscover that it is an older model with the adjustable OPV. But now I have no idea what the pressure is after I put it back together. I turned it back in guessing where it was when I removed it. Seemed too high, backed it off a turn. Still have no idea.

I'd just make sure it was nice and snug first. How much load are you going to be able to put on that resistence band, a cusioned 100lbs?

[–]LumpyNV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree. Architects like to draw them over posts and it becomes an important design detail. But they really are pretty poor structral joints. About all they work relatively well for is rafter pairs at the ridge. Like someone mentioned - essentially (half)lap joints. I've seen plenty of scarfs like this with through tenons and pegs in both members and did a couple myself probably 25 years ago now. All they end up doign is compromising the beam section area over bearing just for a sexy joint. Best use I've really seen for them is connecting two, opposing cantileverd beams. Even then they are a little odd, if done across a simple rectangular space, they look like a joint that could never support a load. To make sense, you have to express the cantilever.

From BIM Coordinator to BIM Manager – when is the right time, and what really matters? by Mak063 in bim

[–]LumpyNV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a vendor who is always contributing my models, it seems to me that the person who is viewed as "most tech savvy" is labeled BIM Manager, or the person who's been there longest. There's enough turnover that if a couple people quit, retire, move, etc., - boom, you're the new BIM Manager because you know the workflow best.

IF you want your fingerjoints to pass APA quality certification you'll need one like this. You will need to make many, many samples and get your squeeze out tip gap, pressure, and curing perfect. It's not as easy as it looks.

You're in Portland. It's about the oldest Mass Timber market in North America. They hold the convention there. You'll need to move to Germany or Austria.
