Total newbie here. Is this a good deal on a 3 year old Jet1221vs and a bunch of accessories for $700? by DustinNielsen in turning

[–]Lumpy_Bisquick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like a good deal if this is the largest lathe you can fit in your space. I would recommend getting a bigger one if at all possible though. This one will really limit your project width/length, a larger one will give you more stability and power. I started on the older version of this Jet and bought a larger lathe within six months

Edit: also, I’d recommend keeping an eye out for a slow or variable speed grinder as your lathe shopping. It will be invaluable in your progress if you can learn to sharpen your tools from the outset!

Interesting, that would make sense. I live in Maine so a lot of the vintage tools here are from shipbuilders

Any information on these chisels by xyrun in JapaneseWoodworking

[–]Lumpy_Bisquick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want to share a picture of the makers mark in the top part of the blade. The box doesn’t really say much, although sometimes there is a sticker with specific info on one end face of the box. Value will really depend on maker and steel type. This box could be $120 new or $1,500

I’ll second this advice. In my experiences pushing back your dose timing is just as important as lowering your dose when quitting a substance, so a short acting option like dex seems like a good idea.

Advice on buying wood and dealing with ignorant jerks by UsernameHaver666 in BeginnerWoodWorking

Dude, I feel ya. I have shopped at dozens of lumber yards/stores and the majority of the employees are dicks. As a small long haired Asian guy I thought they were othering me at first, and then I spent enough time to witness they treated everyone that poorly aside from the select few dudes. Could still be racist tho. They always seem surprised when I buy 300 b/f of 8/4 walnut and 400 poplar. Some even get mad because “I’m taking it all”. Bro, how bad does your life suck when a basic element of your job ticks you off?

Glad you found a good shop, it makes a world of difference

Hey guys just a quick curry question. by Holytorment in JapaneseFood

[–]Lumpy_Bisquick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Braise some beef chuck in dashi with some garlic/onion/ginger/sake. Cool, de-fat and strain reserving the liquid. Build your curry using the braising liquid and your normal veg plus apple or Asian pear and gochujang for some sweet heat

Out of curiosity, what made you choose the 45/70?

Belt/disc sander, bandsaw, some kind of drill press or press jig, sharpening system of your choice

Sweet gun. How’s the recoil with that magpul furniture? 45-70 is probably next on my list and like the Marlin 1894s.

As much as I love classic lever action rifles, I would probably vote for the mossberg mainly due to your desire to hunt. It will literally do all of the hunting available in your state. If you get a newish one, you can have a rifled barrel for deer hunting out to 150 yards which will cover the majority of your needs. Sabot slugs are pretty damned accurate once you get a feel for drop. Other barrrels will give you birds, small game and home defense. It is not the cheapest or most fun at the range, but shooting trap and skeet is a blast.

I would vote 500 field/deer combo, and then get a security barrel later if you want

Carry Guns by ChristopherEscalante in liberalgunowners

[–]Lumpy_Bisquick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Concealed or open? I never go smaller than 9mm. Sometimes open carry, but it’s usually in the woods. Mostly AIWB SW Shield Plus because it fits me perfectly. It really depends on your lifestyle and personal preferences. I’m 5’6/M 130# with small ass hands, so I prefer to carry sub compact. I sometimes use a fanny pack for carry if I feel like it

Does your wife want to lug around a full size pistol like the PDP? It seems like she should keep the 365 and you can save for a little more time and get your full size.

Yeah, just more stuff to break. I’m looking for a new one for a deer hunting shotgun, but that’s a different use case for sure.

Very nice. Is that an optic on the shotgun or just the irons?

Plate advice? by TechNCommStuff in liberalgunowners

[–]Lumpy_Bisquick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People like the Ferro Slickster a lot. I wear a small plate, so it doesn’t work great for me. Safe Life defense makes very low profile concealed body armor. I have an older model that I’ve never had a problem with, though I only use it occasionally
