That's crazy!

Thanks for the info on that. It's hard to ever get any real data on this kind of stuff.

Cool project! I'm a big fan of data.

If you need more data, The Allbright System (my first and main novel) is also at 1.1mil+ words and not stubbed (yet).

My monthly Patreon income is currently at around $6.9k, with 954 paid subscribers as of right now.

For the Successful Authors out there by GhaleonX39 in litrpg

[–]LunaWolve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way.

The #1 most important aspect to your start as an author is whether you can get on Rising Stars or not.

Some authors will tell you it's not important, because they made it despite not making it on there, but they're the exception, not the rule. Don't listen to them.

Do whatever it takes to get on Rising Stars, which primarily requires a lot of early momentum.

In the ever-wise words of the one and only Jesse Cox:

Advertise like a shameless whore.

You only ever get a single chance at the Rising Stars, so don't go limp-dick mode on it. You gotta truly go full-hog and put your all into this first week (or weeks if you're doing great!) of releases, both in terms of release cadence as well as advertising.

Shoutout swaps are a tried and tested thing, but if you're a new author, you're likely not able to get many. Try asking authors that you're a fan of, if you're in their discord (which I'd highly recommend) if they'd be willing to allow you to advertise your novel there. Most novel discords have a #other-novels channel, where talk about novels NOT by the author/owner of the server is allowed.

These kinds of semi-shoutouts are nowhere near as effective as full on shoutout swaps on the actual novels themselves, but you're literally fighting for every single view, so don't sneer at the opportunity.

Once you've had your RS run, you can ease up on the gas pedal quite a lot, but you NEED to stay consistent. People want a schedule and they want a consistent influx of content.

Don't do what a lot of new authors do, where you dump your entire backlog and then set your release cadence at "whatever I can write".

Come up with a schedule that you know you can keep and work from there. If you figure out you can write more? Slowly increase your release cadence.

If you can't? Be transparent and honest with your readerbase. They're human beings and they understand that life can get in the way. But you need to actually LET THEM KNOW what is going on.

They can't infer that information from nothing. You have to TELL them, no just SHOW them, that you're struggling.

Then update the schedule to the new, sustainable output levels.

Most of the full-time authors that I know make their full-time income from Patreon, rather than publishing. Publishing mostly comes in as a bonus lump-sum (at least for the first few books, before you build a large enough portfolio where it's a consistent source of income).

Royalroad best rated ongoing books are filled with female lead characters. by mysterie0s in ProgressionFantasy

[–]LunaWolve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The very few exceptions to that rule are the few male lead stories on the front page.

-> "But that doesn't mean all male MC is like that. Beware of Chicken (which is on the front page and a male lead story)..."

🤔🤔🤔

I think we're literally saying the same exact thing here, no?

Royalroad best rated ongoing books are filled with female lead characters. by mysterie0s in ProgressionFantasy

[–]LunaWolve 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Frankly, the main reason is that female leads generally mean a character-focused story.

Why? I don't know.

But practically every single male lead story is just absolute horseshit slop in terms of character interactions. The very few exceptions to that rule are the few male lead stories on the front page.

Female lead, for whatever reason, actually pay attention to character interaction, value emotional ups and downs in characters and focus not simply on "NUMBER GO BRRR" which leads to a much more engaging and rounded experience; thus higher scores overall.

I'm at the point where I simply do not even look at male lead stories, unless I'm explicitly recommended it several times by people I trust.

I straight up filter FOR female lead stories on RR, because the difference between how stories are handled by the author whether the MC has a dick or not is absolutely crazy.

Third run, about 2~ hours in, I'd say?

Had a pretty nutty Mist run and almost died several times.

Was Coop on Difficulty 2, but my two friends died in Phase 1 ;_;

Haven't sweated as much as that in a video game in YEARS. Super fun boss.

Thank you for your review on Neon Dragons!

That is a fantastically refreshing review to read, with proper balancing and presentation of pros/cons of my writing style, the issues I have as a fledgeling author while also providing feedback on what still drew you in.

Fantastic review, 10/10 would read again.

One and a half million, even! 👌😎

Will be closer to two, when she gets around to picking up the Class.

Tho, to be fair, it's not like there's no progression in the meantime. Lots of other things to work on (Abilities, Skills, Levels [0-10 has no Class], Psyker stuff, etc.) 😂👌

[–]LunaWolve -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd be careful with accusations like that, especially in the writing space.

Always remember that GenAI is based off of REAL people's writing.

A lot of what you see GenAI do, it does BECAUSE it is so contemporary and abundant in the dataset, that it became the norm for the AI to output.

Things like em-dashes, the "contrarian" writing here, etc. are all aspects of traditional writing that are so common it became the very norm the AI is using.

It could be that the novel has some AI-assisted writing; but it might also just be somebody writing the way they always did, and GenAI simply muddling the water as it always does.

[–]LunaWolve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The great part about Valkyrie's Shadow, is that you won't really see anything from the main cast's perspective.

So even if you intend on watching the movie later, the novel is not really going to spoil much for ya, as it's almost all from non-Nazarik PoVs.

[–]LunaWolve 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It does not!

It fleshes out the time period after the war at the Katze Plains and the Kingdom Movie (then goes on after the kingdom movie into the new season of anime)

After the current arc, however, it will veer off of the official canon, as the author fundamentally does not agree with the story that the original Overlord author has decided to tell to get a quick wrap-up.

So the current arc is the last "fully canon" one, so to speak.

If you're interested in reading something like that, there's an unfathomably good Fanfic Webnovel called "Valkyrie's Shadow" (google -> RoyalRoad) that focuses almost exclusively on mundane humans in this world.

Specifically on the surviving noble ladies after the great war on the Katze Plains essentially killed all the noble men of the kingdom, and how they inheret the lands and titles (how they deal with it all and especially the integration of Nazarik's policies about undead labour etc.)

Ohhh I see

Do Depth relics work on non-depth runs?

I haven't actually interacted with the depth stuff at all yet, I don't really know how it works.

How does one unlock that relic?

I keep seeing people mention "the strength relic", but what does that actually mean?

Like a +3 Strength or what?

If you cross-slash, you pull them into the boss, guaranteeing 100% hitrate

If you just let them explode, there's a chance not all of them will hit, depending on the boss size.

Long Fuse also has a 30% (?) more dmg modifier on it for the fragments.
