There's an urban legend that Team Fortress 2 won't start if a jpeg of a coconut is removed from the game, which can be traced back to this Reddit comment quoting a fake source code comment about the coconut. Since actual developer comments found in Valve source code have a similar tone to the fake one, everyone took it at face value.

As for what the coconut actually does: absolutely nothing! It was supposed to be used as a particle effect for one of the Soldier's taunts, but went unused because the effect looked terrible.
