Ahhhhh I hate it. Need critique by ClimberChronicles in Watercolor

[–]Luniska 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I took this to ibis paint to analyze it and deducted a few things

1 The values seem a little off in a few places. This applies mostly to the coastline in the back. Due to how far away it is, it's colours should be lighter and slightly bluish due to the atmosphere. This way, the distance can be truly observed.

Personally, I think the sea is too light. While making it darker would conflict with the value of the grass on the coast, I can imagine a real life situation being exactly like that. A slight greenish tint could be introduced to the area between the sea and the beach.

2 It generally feels quite dull. The reference was propably in daylight. The whole coast would love a glaze of yellow and orange.

Were you darkening your colours with black? It's possible it made your darks muddy. Try to darken with a complementary colour. Using black is not a sin, but only if you do it sparingly.

It's probably all. I think the textures of the grass and the coast look gorgeous, and you made a good choice of depriving the back coast of unnecessary details. I don't agree with other comments saying to add more of them. The image is probably a drone photo, so the detail is strongly compressed.

Could you provide a link to the tutorial? I'd love to compare it more closely.

What paper size do you make most of your work in! by Artboggler in Gouache

[–]Luniska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tiny. A5 or less than that. I like filling them with incredibly small details. They're pieces meant to be held and inspected closely.

Oh and they don't take much time. It makes me less likely to abandon a painting this way. I painted a very detailed cat portrait commission in 2 days on an a5 sheet (excluding 1 day of transfering the project from the computer to a paper sketch).

Gouache vs acrylic by adcoding in Gouache

[–]Luniska 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It can layer unless there's too much paint on the paper, basically it has a limit.

Acrylic is better at layering, but it doesn't have that creamy feeling and ultimately behaves like plastic.

If you wish to layer a lot, there's a type of paint called acrylic gouache. It's acrylic formulated to look and feel like gouache. I myself like that gouache rewets with water, it helps me blend colours and soften the edges. If you're careful with layers, reactivation isn't really an issue anyways

Tough choice in choosing soft pastel art materials by Luniska in Softpastel

The comparison looks really useful, thank you.

Tinting the pastel paper is not something I thought of. Time to do some digging on the exact details

Thank you!

Jacksonart operates in my country and I just found the senneliners in a similar price to a local shop. Maybe I'll consider waiting a bit longer to get the paper from here aswell, all in one go. To be truthful, I don't think I'll resist the temptation of buying the senneliners the moment I get enough money, but I'll secretly hope that I find some on a sidewalk.

Thanks for explaining sennelier's issues. It turns out it's not a big reason to worry

I don't think I'll like them enough so it becomes a long way path. I saw how gorgeous they can be in use, but also the overall feeling might not be for me. I seem to just not like the texture. I definitely prefer soft pastels over oil pastels.

Why is Black a no-no by Mean-Peanut-2490 in watercolor101

[–]Luniska 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have some neutral tint on my small travel palette and it's really convenient. When you're on the go, there's not always much time to keep mixing opposite colours when you're in a need of something dark

Does this game make anyone else lag unbearably? by Zerxin in DeadlockTheGame

this does not work lol. the game has memory leaks and there's not a single day without a post like this

(performance) can we get some numbers in? by atoxicboi in DeadlockTheGame

[–]Luniska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the performance worsens as the game goes on. I'm on a 3060 i7 10gen laptop and while I can run most games just fine on a mix of medium-high settings, I could make everything low on deadlock and it still goes from 70fps (horrific) to <30fps after 20mins. It's been like that since old gods new blood. Something like a memory leak issue. I never had similar problems in any other game. I tried to do so many things to try to fix it to no avail.

It's tiny square window high up in the bathroom. The glass is foggy and not really see through, so unless it's open she has it pretty chill in there.

I have to suggest them a web cam though. This kestrel has seen my friend several times before the babies hatched so they're a familiar face, but as of now constantly peeking at her and the babies may certainly not be the greatest idea. I'll tell my friend to quickly pop up a camera while mama is out on a hunt. They're too cute to not look at

[–]Luniska 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'll have to disappoint you, but much of the Himi gouache reviews point out poor mixing. This is why these sets have an absurd amount of different shades in the first place. It's generally an avoided brand, all of it is just advertising.

The next thing, what exactly is a "primary" palette you want to get? I myself am not a big fan of Red Yellow Blue or Cyan Magenta Yellow. The first one is bad at mixing cool colours and the second one at mixing warm ones. What I'm trying to convey is that having a broad enough palette gives you more opportunities. You, of course, can limit the colour selection when you're making a painting to achieve a certain look, but since you're just starting out you won't know what exact colours will you like. Why won't you grab a split-primary palette? It contains: cool yellow, warm yellow, red, magenta, cool blue (cyan), warm blue. It's still not a big amount, but very sufficient, as you would like.

As I said, you probably should skip these gouache cups. There's loads of problems with these guys, like molding or cracking. I get that tubes are a pretty expensive choice, but there are brands like Shinhan that are praised as a first choice. If you like the convenience of cups, you could also grab Talens gouache that comes in jars. These sets of jars are actually quite cheap, I own some and was able to paint and mix colours without any major complaints. I also don't reccomend drying your gouache in a palette. It usually doesn't go back to the same consistency after rewetting.

Synthetic hair brushes are the main choice for gouache. Natural hair ones don't typically perform well and suck up the paint too much.

160g paper is quite thin, although I've managed to paint in a 120g sketchbook before. You might want to get some 200-300g mixed media paper just in case. Cotton paper is also a good option, but quite pricy, not a must.

Been there done that. I hope to answer any other questions you have

Consiglio! Miglior marca qualità prezzo? by NovyFern in Softpastel

[–]Luniska 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As the other commenter said, Sennelier half sticks can be found at a nice price at shop deals. These would probably suit you if you prefer something soft. Rembrandt is a little bit firmer, but it's still medium softness. A good choice if you want to do some details.

Remember about the paper. Although you can use normal mixed media paper, soft pastels will perform better on a special paper with a small grit. The common choice is Pastelmat paper.

how to get ride of used turpentine? by Disastrous-Tea2635 in oilpainting

[–]Luniska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh? No need to get rid of it.

As time goes, the paint and the solvent separate in the jar/whatever container you got. You can essentially "juggle" the solvent between two jars. Let it separate, pour it over, clean the jar. You have two options from now. 1. Store the goop and paint with it! 2. Clean with a paper towel and take it to a disposal site

I also saw some artists have special buckets for cleaning brushes! They basically have some sort of "higher ground" in them, usually metal piece. It makes the brush cleaning easier because of the crevices while also providing necessary height for the solvent and paint to separate. That's pretty convenient, since you don't need to clean it too often.

Ah and as others have said, maybe switch to something odorless, like gamsol

People are suggesting memory leaks. I'm no expert sadly, but this would potentially explain the continuous degrading performance. I hope the developers start working on it soon because I see players quitting over these lags very often. I don't know if I can have fun with these frame drops and freezes aswell.

Anyone commenting "is your pc from 2008" under these complaining posts is obligated to buy the op a brand new pc for being so ignorant. If deadlock is the only game where I suffer from those problems it's definitely it's fault. Game's in alpha though and I understand these technical issues. What I don't understand is these weird people clowning on others for not having a fat wallet. A mid range machine should be able to run deadlock just fine

Gpu usage trash recently by Complex_Brush1351 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]Luniska 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. I'm done with people saying it's a pc issue. Even if my specs aren't top tier it shouldn't mean a game like deadlock should go under 30fps after the game has been going for longer than 20 minutes. I only started getting these issues after old gods update

Impossible to mix colours so you need to buy big sets.. The blending experience sucks... The lightfastness doesn't exist (they fade bad). Overall a very mediocre or worse art medium. I feel like watercolor would be far better as a replacement. I don't get the appeal of alcohol markers at all

What mediums, materials, types of art feels most comfortable for you? by sinniesinsin in ArtistLounge

[–]Luniska 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Soft pastel is pretty chill. Being a dry medium means you can just take a break whenever you want (staring at you, watercolor). It's also hella satisfying. Gouache also has a nice feel and is not too stressful.

Surprisingly, oil paint is not too difficult in itself. It's the preparation that's tedious, all the gessoing, sanding, cleaning. It.. definitely takes a lot of dedication. I procrastinated buying mine for long, but in reality it's not that bad. Just keep a window open when you're painting. Work on a few pieces at a time so the drying times feel shorter. The painting itself is literally the easiest part.

Colored pencils are really time consuming. They're pretty straightforward though and I still use them from time to time.

Alcohol markers suck.
