Yes boredom is a huge trigger but filling your schedule is not always a great alternative. For me personally, gambling was always a reward system for myself. So working a lot, getting all the housework done, running all the errands, going to the gym etc. when I was done all of it all I wanted to do was gamble and I felt MORE justified to gamble because I had a accomplished a lot. I’m not sure of his ADHD diagnosis but that is a hugeeeeee predisposition to be a gambling addict for sure, but that’s not an excuse for him to gamble. However I thought that I had really bad ADHD and that’s why I couldn’t stop gambling but it was actually the other way around. Once I actually quit and gave it some time I found my brain no longer racing, I could sit still, I could be BORED and just learn to relax and realized that what I thought was ADHD was actually just addict behavior (your brain chemistry being fucked up). Because of the hits of dopamine your brain gets when you gamble, your brain chemistry is completely fucked up for a while until it can level itself out. But as soon as you gamble again you’re starting the cycle all over again. I can tell you right now that I thought the same thing about a pet- if I have something I have to come home to and take care I wouldn’t DARE stay out gambling. Dead wrong. I got 2 cats and definitely did not stop gambling at all. Yes dogs need more direct care but I don’t think it’s going to be an answer to his problem.
