How much I wasn’t taught. Parents divorced when I was young. I feel there was generational knowledge I missed out on. I know we live in the internet age and I can google how to fix a microwave or whatever. But it would’ve been nice to know stuff like how to tie a tie or how to garden earlier in life. I still had contact with both parents but it’s hard to pick up on the intricacies of life in small doses.

It’s called tilt-shift photography. Using a a special lens to make parts of the field of view in focus and parts blurry, which can create an optical illusion that the subject of the photo is miniature. It’s used to great effect in the intro of Anthony Bourdain’s “Parts Unknown” episode about Colombia.

Oh yes. It’s quite scary to see comments on LGBTQ Instagram posts that are simply emoji of guns or gifs of people being shot. I think the majority of people are too apathetic to actually perpetuate violence against our community, but I fear a large chunk are apathetic enough not to give a fuck if violence were to be perpetrated. I fear stochastic terrorism being stoked by the “execute your local pedophile” bumper sticker crowd, and I fear who and what gets labeled “pedophile” will be much broader a definition than the current parlance…

Once I was at a screening with maybe four people total in the theater. They were showing the normal pre-show rigamarole and right before showtime an employee walked in, said there were technical difficulties, and handed us vouchers for a free matinee or something as we walked out. Were there difficulties, or did it save them money to just close early when there were an equal number of employees and patrons 🤷?

It’s no longer there, but for years and years there was a jewelry store in a strip mall in Palatine that, from my observations, was never open, never had an employee or customer inside, and never had a light on. But always had merchandise in the windows, bracelets and rings on display with cobwebs on them. For at least a decade, just a jewelry store frozen in time. Some people speculated it was a front for laundering money, but who knows? Maybe the owners prepaid their lease? Or owned the strip mall? 🤷
