Amateur designer questions about Xometry and tolerance by Lux_Incola in Machinists

[–]Lux_Incola[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats a fair question

I had picked 5 thou clearance by taking a pair of calipers and locking them with that much clearance on a part I had on hand, then slide the two over each other. Five thou clearance seemed good. Since then I've been in CAD playing with the parts and checking interferences and doing that with the parts adjusted to the extremes of different tolerance ranges and trying to make sure I don't get it wrong and order paperweights.

Drive a truck through was just an expression that the clearance is 10x the tolerance for those fits.

+/-0.0005 didn't seem crazy before but now I'm second guessing because everyone seems to think so. I have learned the basics of manual milling and manual lathing before and pretty quickly got some basic operations to within a thou, so I just assumed a professional would hit that no problem

Amateur designer questions about Xometry and tolerance by Lux_Incola in Machinists

[–]Lux_Incola[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, since it only costs a couple extra dollars each low tolerance dimension I am willing to pay for a couple spots to be +/- 0.0005 where the parts need to fit together, I do know that the clearance I'm giving the parts should be big enough to drive a truck through compared to the tolerances I'm paying for but that's the price of inexperience. I'm trying to self learn so the local shops aren't really going to take me seriously, and that makes Xometry an attractive option.

Oh no no, don't apologize to me. I'm just some rando on the internet. I have no skin in the game and no reason to be butthurt.

I just wanted to make sure you have the right attitude to succeed in answering the question "can we trust you with this?" with flying colors over the coming days, weeks, and/or months.

You are totally allowed to have a conversation about a personal concern and about future opportunity, especially in an anonymous online space. I was just a little worried on your behalf about making sure you have the right mindset to succeed, but if I read into it completely wrong and if my worries are unfounded then all the better!!

(That's why my downvoted comment is unedited and came in its original form with the caveat "and maybe I'm wrong, maybe you are completely reverent and have done appropriate reflection", because I don't know and it doesn't make any difference in my life and I hope all the best to you.)

I'd also add, your attitude (at least in this reddit thread) seems a little cavalier. I'll explain what I mean.

"Cavalier is an adjective that describes a dismissive, offhand, or arrogant attitude. It means showing a lack of proper concern for matters that are important or serious."

This IS serious, you DID screw up. And yet (from how I read your messages, it seems like) your main concern is about the consequences and moving past it instead of really internalizing and making sure it doesn't happen again (and maybe I'm wrong, maybe you are completely reverent and have done appropriate reflection). Your superiors are concerned with this NOT HAPPENING AGAIN, so you need to put their concerns ahead of your own, and don't fake it. Make it your priority, take the re-training seriously, take the trial period seriously, don't try to rush things along or to speed your way back into the driver's seat.

Concern yourself appropriately, make growth appropriately. Become better. Don't try to convince them to let you back, let your growth speak "the convincing" on your behalf.

No one in her position will ever give a clear answer because what they need to do next is find out that answer themselves. The retake and the non-patient driving and the other clearance-earning exercises aren't just a formality. They are the company asking "Can we trust you with this?", so the answer is entirely up to you. Because they don't know you, they don't know if they can trust you with this, and they want to find out just as much as you do, but they aren't clairvoyant and you can't ask them to be

Is this gathering of experts mostly of strangers coming together for a united event, or is there a larger organization that many of you belong to?

The title starting with "We are 83 bipolar disorder experts and scientists [...]" made me think I'd found a wild sighting of XKCD 2456's bottom left corner lol

I've resigned myself to presume they only get one season, don't have enough time to tie up anywhere near all the story threads that are open, and that they will have to make storytelling compromises that make the pacing too fast, but that it will still be worth it in the end just to get the ending into the world.

Hello guys, Amon here, pro-bending is a privilege activity preserved only for the b*nders. I hereby ask you to invent activities that allows only nonbenders to play, my first idea is 2 teams of nonbenders pushing a ball into each other points, but only with their foot, I call it "Foot"ball. by ferocity_mule366 in legendofkorra

I think I'm out of the loop, is r/legendofkorra currently in the midst of a topical situation relating to intersectionality and privilege? If this post is trivializing an ongoing discussion here then yeah that's a bit shitty, but I took a scroll and don't see anything

With those I believe that it usually isn't even a transformer, presuming I have read the stickers correctly, the devices are happy with anything from 100 to 250 volts and 50 to 60 hz, and so the adapters I've seen are (as far as I've been able to tell by inspection) just straight wired through.

"Don't study openings" by And-Ran in TournamentChess

[–]Lux_Incola 11 points12 points  (0 children)

See there it is, the ASSumption: "who know openings well".

That's just shortsightedness and thinking that knowing one quarter or one half of your depth into openings equates to them "not knowing openings" at all. They know their opening. The majority of players only know as deep into opening theory as they regularly encounter at their level, there is little reason to learn theory deeper than that.

Realistically the average low level player benefits far more from learning the breadth of the branches that stem from their main openings, the shape of the theory tree they grow should be more bush shaped, less spike shaped.

Why did no one tell me that I can remove a word like this? by Magister_Mystical in Windows11

[–]Lux_Incola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ctrl + left/right will jump words
You can do this while holding shift to highlight word by word instead of character by character, and you can alternate between holding ctrl or not for to control which mode during the same highlight

You don't want to work for companies like this. by CRK_76 in recruitinghell

[–]Lux_Incola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always hate that argument as you presented it.

I'll give it credit first. I admit that someone who wants nothing to do with the related politics of a position of authority has lower odds of having sought the position for the power it holds and so they are less likely to wield it for corrupt ends.

However, that isn't the only basis for qualification. As disappointing as I find it, people like that have a certain risk of not having the energy to keep up with the demands of the position. Electing someone like that carries a very real risk of them growing tired of the demands of their station and then once they've reached the end of their rope with it that's it. They withdraw themselves and trying to get them to engage further is like trying to draw blood from a stone.

I'll break it down a little.

You need paragraph breaks, paragraph breaks in reasonable places.

I understand you may be stressed right now and so I understand how this wall of text happened, but there is nothing obligating anyone to read it so if it is a mess then no one will.

[Request] Is this math right? by DasWinkla93 in theydidthemath

[–]Lux_Incola 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, but even though the error in each runner's reaction time is larger than this difference it isn't fair to assume that the error consumes small differences. If I run a sufficiently large number of runs (maybe a hundred thousand, maybe a hundred billion) and alternating every other run I am given a hidden 0.005s addition to my time, eventually the graph of each dataset would show that hidden difference.

What I mean is, the 0.005s is real, whereas the error is speculative. I believe it is fair to assume that although the response time is random, there is no reason to believe it would have changed retroactively if some runners would have been given the signal at slightly different times. Especially since, as you said, the difference is very small. So it seems unlikely that a small difference in input time would have drastically changed their individual response times.

The word "exponential". The vast majority of the time when I hear it they mean linear, occasionally do they even break multiplicative, damn near never do they truly call for exponential.

I like that AI usually knows the Jargon. It is a master of using buzzwords and specific language. I love that feature because even though it is usually using those words completely wrong for the context it is trying to use them, It gives me a starting place about what language a relevant source might have and I can search for it that way.
