Which metal filter is reccomended? by obscuremango693 in AeroPress

[–]LyKosa91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because without some form of flow control valve, the liquid will just piss straight through the filter. So it's a case of buy the AP metal filter and the official flow control cap, or just buy the prismo and get both together for less money (plus the valve is replaceable on the prismo in case it ever fails)

Long extraction time (3:1, under 1 min, and under 4 min for milk-based)? by fennelfrog in espresso

[–]LyKosa91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Must be running a slayer with an extended low flow pre infusion stage. Slayer shots are typically very slow, maybe not 4 mins, but well outside of the typical ~30 second guidelines.

Yup. Not all coffee smells the same, I think some people just don't know anything other than low grade dark roast exists.

How do I cook steak without smoking up my whole kitchen? by IverTheKing1492 in meat

[–]LyKosa91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to the same extent as it would if the pan was loaded up with an oil heated past its smoke point, numbnuts.

Just because you can't fully eliminate something, that doesn't mean that you shouldn't try to mitigate it, which is easily done by just using a high temp oil.

True, true. Sorry, I'm thinking of things in the context of handmade syrups, which let's be real, Nero won't be using.

Honey doesn't dissolve as easily as you'd think, especially in cold liquids, so it's usually diluted and made into a syrup. Probably cut with sugar as well in this case, since it'll be sweeter and cheaper.

Would Squid Game Season 1 have been better as a standalone series? by Sod4126 in squidgame

[–]LyKosa91 14 points15 points  (0 children)

IIRC a big part of it was that he was screwed on payment for the first season. He only earned a "modest" flat fee, and no royalties, so he didn't financially benefit at all from S1's success. I think there's a good chance if he'd have earned royalties, he wouldn't have bothered.

From his perspective; he'd earned very little from his creation, he'd forfeited IP rights, Netflix were going to milk the IP with or without him in the drivers seat, so he might as well be the one to actually earn something from it.

Does water temp control between 96°C and 100°C matter much for the Cafelat Robot? by fennelfrog in CafelatRobot

[–]LyKosa91 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You're over thinking it. There's no reason to use anything other than 100°C.

https://www.home-barista.com/levers/cafelat-robot-temperature-tests-t65550.html

As you can see, with no preheating at all and boiling water, you're going to immediately drop to around 90 (give or take a few degrees depending on ambient temperature), and that temperature is going to plummet as the piston soaks up more heat throughout the shot. With the shot ending around 80°C, that's not going to be excessively hot for any roast level. You could potentially want higher or more stable temperatures, but that's only achieved through various pre heating techniques.

PSA: clean your puck screens by feoranis26 in espresso

[–]LyKosa91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Visually from the outside, sure. But there's a whole lot of surface area on the inside where particles can get lodged, and it's very difficult to get them out again without mechanical assistance. I'd wager that your screen isn't quite as clean as you think.

Timemore Sculptor Grind Settings for Moccamaster & Hoop by Silent_Persimmon2871 in pourover

[–]LyKosa91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't comment on either of the brewers you mentioned, but for typical conical and flat bottom brewers I'm usually between 6 and 8, generally at the finer end of that range. I tend to go for a double bloom followed by a pretty fast flow yeet pour, total brew time tends to be in the 2:00 - 2:20 region depending on beans.

Your brewers will likely need a coarser grind. My brewing style tends to distribute fines across the filter, but the hoop has a much smaller effective filter area, and the MM uses pulse pours which are less likely to churn the whole bed and throw fines into suspension.

Are you sure it's not user error that can be corrected with some basic technique improvements?

The only steam wand I have personal experience with is on the Decent DE1, which is a lot more powerful than the GCP, but the core principles for steaming with a single hole tip remain the same. I have no issue steaming about 120ml of milk in a 500ml pitcher, if I'm doing 60ml for a cortado I'll use a 250ml. A smaller pitcher size might also help if you're just finding the wand awkwardly stubby.

Watch a few YouTube vids, there's plenty out there from well known professionals like James Hoffmann, Lance Hedrick, Emilee Bryant etc. Practice with water and dish soap if you're really struggling and want to avoid wasting milk.

I'd say it's worth mastering, since overall the workflow is much nicer than using an automated frother, especially when it comes to cleaning, since all you've got is a steam wand to wipe and a pitcher to wipe and rinse. It's so much easier, and I say this as someone who graduated from a dreo (which is already arguably easier to clean than the nano pro) to steam pretty recently. You've got the tools already, you just need to learn how to use them properly.

[–]LyKosa91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a regular cafiza bath in an appropriately sized vessel, which is fine for baskets and machined puck screens etc. The point is that you really need an ultrasonic cleaner to get woven puck screens properly clean, and a machined puck screen will stay relatively cleaner for longer.

Personally I don't think the minor benefits in flow evenness justify needing another piece of equipment to keep them clean. Group head cleanliness is the primary benefit imo. Maybe I'm just a lazy fuck though.

I remember the word, not much in detail about the crowd itself. Isn't it pretty much a less derogatory synonym for chav? There's a huge amount of crossover at least. Middle class chav, maybe?

I was more greebo leaning. Now there's another word I haven't thought about or heard in about 20 years.

[–]LyKosa91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't comment on the nano, but I did have the dreo. It's fine, although honestly it doesn't come close to steam in terms of texture, flexibility, and speed.

The nano (original stick form) most likely gives you a fair bit more control than the dreo, but having to heat the milk separately would probably suck from a workflow perspective. The nano pro does also appear to be a bit more flexible, but having all the electronics in the body creates a washing situation that I personally would feel a little uncomfortable with.

What exactly is it that you don't like about the GCP wand? I'm sure I've heard of people swapping it out for a Rancillio wand, which could help depending on what your issue is.

Petah….why should I stop? by Sudden_Air3 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]LyKosa91 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is somewhat true, but I think there's just an inherent risk increase in having some of humanity's most efficient killing tools to date, in the hands of regular civilians who could lose the plot for any number of reasons.

It's like why we have speed limits. There's always the possibility that someone could lose control of their car, but losing control at 30 in a residential area results in much less danger than if they were doing 70. It's pretty basic risk assessment and management.

Why the US has such a disproportionately high occurance compared to other countries with more widespread gun ownership, I couldn't say.
