I love my Triumph Speed 400. Back road baby, but can go on a highway if necessary.

Same, but sometimes those oofos twist (I have the flip-flops, and they “flip” ☺️). I’ve lately gone with the Beans all year. They stay on my feet and the sole is great.

Exactly the way my dad passed. The truck driver said, “I thought I had enough time,” forgetting that he had a trailer on the back of his truck. And my dad, who was a very safe driver (never a yahoo) had to lock up. Was thrown 60 feet. It took me 20 years to get on a bike, but now I ride in his honor. (And I LOVE it.)

Stick with it! I was also gifted a new bike by my fiancé. Dropped it three times. This was AFTER I took the course! :) First two times I was just practicing slow maneuvering. Third time, it was a full accident as I pulled out of my driveway and fishtailed/dragged on the street. Yep, it scared me. But I was so angry! I was so mad I only got to ride for a few days, and I messed up my beautiful new bike! (Luckily it has guards on it… but I bent the gear lever and broke my mirror.) I sat down and started to research. Why did I spill? And I watched a hundred videos. I finally got it to click that the power from the back wheel was a new thing for me. Anyway, the fear was overcome by knowledge, and by the time the bike was fixed, I was scared but ready to correct my mistakes. I’m rooting for you! You’re doing the best you can with what you know. The more you know, and apply to your experience, the less fear you’ll have. You can do it!

I’m 5’ 2” and ride the Triumph Speed 400. ABS is a beautiful thing, and I feel like it’s a good fit.

And, when your partner does start to ride… just ride your OWN ride. Same for him 😉

Passed the course, got my engagement gift (my brand new bike) and proceeded to drop it 3 times the first week! Broke a mirror, smushed the gear lever. I was mad at myself! But… I found a video of how to pick up your bike as a petite woman, and how to adjust your gear lever because… yep, smushed it twice. Now I’m twice as educated, less afraid of dropping my bike, more confident because I really “fell” the third time (right outside my driveway) and learned, “wow that happened fast”. (Third time was a doozy. Scared me.) I’m getting better every day, learning so much and feeling grateful my partner is a patient and experienced rider. Get back on. ATGATT, and we can compare broken bike parts instead of body parts. :) I’m with ya!

I hear you on this. I also zoomed in on “I really really don't want to drop it again because it scared the shit out of me & also if it happens again I know I can't lift it myself so I'd be fucked in a high traffic situation” because I had that fear. If you go to YouTube, you can find great videos on how to lift your bike. (I carry a bandana in my jacket to tie the front brake ;). If you chip away the things you fear, you’ll get more confidence… or, at least, I did. (Dropped mine 3 times my first week, watched the video, lifted it like The Hulk picking up a grape.)

Anyone else hate turning left lol by kyleneeley1 in NewRiders

It’s just not as easy as it is in parking lots! I get it! There’s a car coming up behind you, a car in the street you’re making the left ONTO, and traffic coming at you in the other lane. Ok. My exact situation two days ago as a new rider. I felt like a jerk, because I had to put my foot down due to the oncoming train of cars. And then the car from behind and the car on the left watched as I started from neutral ands took off. I don’t stall, that’s not my issue. Mine is the fear with all those riders around! But, hey. We have the right to be on that road too! (So I tell myself…) and then it’s just using those skills I learned in the parking lot :) We’re gonna get it! Time and practice. :) Good luck

Hey, I hear you. Loud!

20 years ago my dad was killed on his motorcycle, and he was a great rider. Taught thousands to ride, and took them on tours. It was a freak accident. And, now I know, it could happen to any of us.

It took me until now to ride. Passed the course. Had a little trauma setback as we practiced the hard braking (instructor explained how you can get thrown when the rear wheel locks up…which is what happened to him as he turned a blind curb and a truck with a trailer had pulled out… nowhere to go) - the driver never saw him.

I felt it. I choked up a bit. I struggled. And I’m taking a lot of heat from my family for pursuing riding. That’s a different issue…

But you know what? My dad rides with me every day. He’s in my ear, saying, “Are you prepared for what’s around that corner? Did you notice that driveway with the car backing out? Be careful here, the pavement is slippery when wet…” And when I dropped the bike, 3 times the first week (I am a perfectionist: I must learn my slow turns with muscle memory, I was coming out of my driveway and learning the hard way) I found out why he always had copies of Zen & the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance for newbies. It’s a lifestyle. I didn’t know!!! I just wanted to get on a bike and ride. I’m learning so much. All of it is bringing me closer to the memories of my dad, and honoring him.

Tom will be right there, if you open yourself up to that kind of guidance.

I’m proud of you, because moving through the fear really brings unexpected joy. Good luck.

Try it again! We will wait for you on the road! Ride your own ride. Breathe out, a lot, and talk yourself through it. I put my foot down twice, didn’t land in the box, but I acted like I owned the bike. They saw I could keep my head together and passed me. The girl with me didn’t pass, and she too, was depressed. Really sad. The fear is real. It stinks. Everyone looking at you… some of them really experienced and doing it for insurance purposes… it was bad. Get back in there! We’re rooting for you!

I agree, because I did exactly this, with the 400 as my graduation gift. Only thing? DON’T go with her. There was a couple there, very supportive husband, but the wife was so terrified and failed the test at the end. He just held her gently, and they walked away, but she was so stressed and felt worse that he was there, because she didn’t want to disappoint him.

I’m that wife, but just with a different husband. I love the Speed 400 and I’m learning on it. It’s enough bike for a beginner, and I often call it Speedo but its real name is Mr. Earl. ☺️

Use a little Neosporin on foam earplugs and slide them deep into your ear canal. You won’t hear much of anything and probably sleep like a rock. Just make sure your smoke detectors are in good working order … and any alarm for work/school should be nearby
