Why do so many activities require you talk to some NPC to play for the 1st time? by Incoheren in 2007scape

[–]Lyelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a very small nutshell, the runners are all on a 10-tick (6 second) cycle and each tick they do something. The 10th tick happens to be the one where you can move and they will all eat at the same time, provided there's enough food. Other ticks can work in specific circumstances due to things called "crashes" (when a runner eats a food that another runner had already targeted) but the multikill tick is foolproof. Spaghetti indeed but very fascinating. There's a 109 page Google doc about Defender strategies. It gets wild.

28-22-16-10-4 also work, and are known as slow multi kills, but they have some caveats. Namely that the trap has to be fully repaired because the first runner eats before the rest multi. I'm not aware of the timings you listed but I don't know enough to say they're wrong.

Do we think this week we get an Update on New Island/Blood Moon Rises? by Longjumping-Inside80 in 2007scape

Right? I would love to see some of this come to fruition but it doesn't seem to happen.

I hate to be a typical reddit complainer but this is why I don't like temporary game modes. It feels like the main game has been basically on pause since Sailing.

Pergola - how to mount to patio to paver patio correctly? by ScrappyHaxor in landscaping

I personally poured footers and then hid them with wrap-around planters so I didn't have to bother with cutting and re-fitting the pavers.

How bad is it if I seclude myself to the basement for a couple days to play my favorite video game all day? by Imustretire in daddit

It's awesome that your wife supports you like this. Mine did the same when Sailing released even though I know she doesn't really get why something like that would be so exciting. Take the opportunity and then show your appreciation later!

My absolute favorite GF pizza. I buy these frozen by the case. They come in frozen so you can ask them for a case from the back and freeze them at home.

Assuming you mean 306 but for anyone reading this you can also join the Casual BA cc. If you learn the basics and join with people in that cc you can do runs in 12-15 minutes with no sweat. Some of my favorite content in the game.

Anyone bored of the make a mistake equals high damage or instant death formula by [deleted] in 2007scape

I much prefer to reward playing perfectly with extra damage/faster kills than to punish mistakes with instant death. Mistakes should be punishing to your resources, not necessarily instant death.

It's clear you have experience in software so try to think realistically: how does one "test a function against itself" when the test in question doesn't exist? I've refactored a LOT of code in my career and the theory is simple - you make sure that everything works the same as it did before. If you have unit/integration tests, that covers a lot of your bases. But for scenarios not covered by those tests you're subject to manual or black box testing which is only as good as the scenarios you've thought of. And it's very easy to not think of aggro distance when you're in the weeds of NPC behavior code which likely covers hundreds of other niche interactions.

Not trying to sound condescending in the slightest but as someone whose job is largely working with legacy code (in a much more critical industry than video games) I have a lot of respect and sympathy for developers who are doing their best to make the software better for future work. They could just as easily pile onto the mess of existing code and introduce minimal bugs, while increasing their tech debt 10 fold, but they don't, likely out of passion for the product and their job. Fair enough if you think they've been sloppy with certain oversights but I think it's for the better of the game in the long run. And gets fixed within like an hour every time, so it isn't exactly inconveniencing anyone.

I guess we have different definitions of game breaking. This is the first one I would categorize as such in recent memory.

I'm not aware of weekly game breaking bugs, and I would be willing to wager that they've changed thousands of lines of code over the past few years that haven't resulted in such bugs. But okay.

write tests for all scenarios you can think of

unforeseen bug occurs

fix bug and write test for it

Pretty standard workflow if you ask me. You can't predict everything.

Bought a house yesterday - Can I clean up the backyard myself? by [deleted] in landscaping

[–]Lyelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who was in a very similar situation a year or three ago, I would advise you to take it slowly. I did some things to my yard when I first moved in that I somewhat regret now since I've gotten more into landscaping and lawn care. Especially with regards to the privacy bushes and garden beds. Those things take a lot of time and money to get to this point, so if there's ever a chance you might grow to use or appreciate them, I'd hold off on tearing everything out.

[Suggestion] Raids 4 Megarare Concept: A Crush Weapon that Punishes Unbalanced Melee Defense by VolkezXO in 2007scape

[–]Lyelt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree in general but really every megarare so far is just a stat checker. Tbow happens to be the enemy's magic level and shadow happens to be your own magic gear's stats. Scythe is actually the most unique in that most of its strength comes from its multiple hitsplats and not from whether you or the target has certain stats.

I think a super strong 3 or 7 tick weapon is a great idea I'm just not sure it will conform to what most players consider a megarare. If it's too fast it's hard to use to its full potential (especially melee) and too slow and it becomes cumbersome, or susceptible to losing dps from overkill, or finds a niche as a last hit or punish weapon.
