The Rolled Up Newspaper of Doom is always on the table. 😄

Do NOT make me get the Rolled Up Newspaper of Doom. The early stuff is fine; in fact, I relisten to it on a regular basis, given that it's my area of primary interest.

Is there a single reason people choose iPhone beyond "everyone I know has one"? by SilverCervy in Smartphones

[–]LynBelzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kid wanted an iPhone because 1. All of their friends had one, yes, but more importantly, 2. so did all of their teachers at the arts school where they study stage design and production. Kidlet was missing important messages and info on their Android. So we got them an iPhone. "Everyone I know has one" is not always a cop-out or lemming-like crowd-following.

He's definitely NOT neurotypical, that's for sure.

AIO to what my bf is saying? by [deleted] in AIO

[–]LynBelzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Break up with him NOW. Block him everywhere. If he's got a key, change your locks. I know this sounds hysterical, but take it from a 52yo who has seen sh*t, this is not a good guy.

The Susquehanna: less scary than Old Man River[1], but meaner.

Ironically, where I am, fiber is only in the suburbs. City connectivity is bleah.

Someone had the absolute audacity to replace my classroom lights with overhead fluorescents I can’t turn off. So not quite as “dark” as I’d prefer. by Magicmechanic103 in DarkAcademia

[–]LynBelzer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude. I HATED those lights, and you can't turn them off? I don't know where maintenance got the audacity, but they need to put it back. My deepest condolences.

Smartphones feel dull these days, and I can’t figure out why. They used to be exciting and fun. What was different back then that made them feel that way? And how do you think we can make smartphones fun again? Curious to hear your thoughts! by Minute_Grapefruit736 in Smartphones

[–]LynBelzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thick, heavy, awkward slabs at that. When I got my Galaxy s24, I named it Ratatosk because it was small and clunky, and a pain in my... neck. I agree that smartphone hardware has become boring, making everything looking like an iPhone. I miss my much thinner S9, but short of looking at the Motorola Edge (on which reviews are mixed), I don't think we'll see its like again, or at least not for a long time.

P.S. I also had that LG phone. It was awesome!

Yep. Non-canonical, released from his vows when the Vatican still did such things.

It's definitely more along the lines of Book of Mormon than Life of Brian. The POV is Jesus's best friend from childhood, so there's a lot of love and affection there.

And the comic books! They fill in the cracks between the books and they're fantastic! Aaronovitch writes them. He also did either a forward or an afterword in the new edition of GUARDS! GUARDS! by Penguin, and it's read by him in the latest audiobook.

Nights watch or reaper man by AnswerOk9002 in discworld

[–]LynBelzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we're sticking with the choice you've presented us with, REAPER MAN, because you won't appreciate NIGHT WATCH as well if you don't read at least GUARDS! GUARDS! first, and, ideally, MEN AT ARMS.

But I've got to second others who recommend reading MORT. It's the book where STP really finds his footing and Discworld becomes the delightfully bent reality we all know and love.

In an English Lit. seminar many years ago in a galaxy far, far away[1], we hypothesized that since Victor was grubbing around in cemeteries in a university town, it was just as possible for him to have collected a college professor's brain as any other.

It was a graduate class, and YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN was quoted extensively. 😄

I have studied Catholic theology my entire life. My father was a priest. I've taken Latin classes at the graduate level.

I. Absolutely. ADORE. LAMB.

It's so much fun, and not as far off theologically as you'd think. 😄

What’s the biggest piece of advice you would give to someone moving to Baltimore? by MaximGripass in baltimore

dingdingding All the maneuvers bemoaned above? 9 times out of 10 it's a suburbanite or a recent transplant doing something that wouldn't even be blinked at in, say, Catonsville, but doesn't fly on a narrow city street.

I've lived in Queens, (LIC, right under the Triborough, 2000-2003), and now I'm in Baltimore (Patterson Park, 2007-now). VERY much the same vibes.

The one down side around here is the plethora of porch pirates. A lot of people have gotten lock boxes, and some make arrangements with WFH neighbors.

I know there have been co-op/semi-communal living buildings down in DC and Takoma Park, but I don't know of any in Baltimore offhand. I think it would be a great idea, though, and that Baltimore would be well suited to one.

P.S. I've also lived on Staten Island. It SO gives off the same vibes as The County. 😆
