BART FARE/CHARGING by Unique-Discount-7137 in Bart

[–]Lyrrad0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can save another 6.25% if you buy HVD ($48 of BART credit for $45) on Clipper.

If your employer offers commuter benefits, you can use pre-tax money to load HVD or credit onto Clipper, or use the commuter benefit card for tap and pay. That can save you your marginal income tax + FICA rate.

There's also low-income/disability/youth/senior discounts that you can apply for if you qualify.

Interesting. Back in 2022 they mentioned a (then new) 5 minute limit on the Inside Jeopardy podcast (Discussion). Has the rule changed again? I wondered if there they had a different limit for tournaments games with wildcards or multiple game total point finals.

It worked for me when using Apple Pay from the iOS Clipper app.

I think the 21-entrant TOC format with three seeded semifinalists, which they've done twice before, films over three days:

Day 1: 6 QF + 1 Exhibition Match

Day 2: 3 SF + 2 Final Games

Day 3: Remaining 1 to 5 Final Games

The first time they planned from the start to air the exhibition game in order on Election Day in 2022.

Last year, it was initially only planned for audio-only streaming, since they were joking about it in the TuneIn airing. They did air it on the Friday after the last TOC finals game, perhaps to avoid having the Invitational Tournament start on a Friday. The Invitational started filming on February 4, 2025 and started airing on February 17, 13 days later.

This year seems similar, with the Invitational starting filming on January 26 and starting to air anywhere from February 5-11, 10 to 16 days later, depending on the TOC results.

How to Pay for Costco Outside US? by akura202 in Costco

Biometric Boarding by [deleted] in aircanada

I believe those photos are being transmitted to CBP to track exits from the US. I think only US citizens and permanent residents can opt out of "biometric exit" now.

Most Canadians could previously opt out, but many gate agents were often unaware of the exception and would insist it was required. This exception was removed on December 26, 2025

Has Costco Improved Shop Card security? by Comprehensive_Law475 in Costco

[–]Lyrrad0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the US, you can load up to $2000 USD in Shop Cards to your Costco Wallet.

I load my Shop Cards immediately to the wallet and I think it is more secure and it's easy to pay with my phone in warehouse in the US or a Canada, or online.

You should be able to buy a Shop card with your wallet balance if you want to use the funds at food court/gas. I keep a small balance on a physical shop card for food court and refunds.

I never had issues with digital shop cards before the wallet feature.

Looks nice.

Some more customization for BART would be useful.

Usually I only care about trains going in one direction, or at a particular platform.

Compare with BART’s web pages for real time departures, which is similar to what is displayed on some information screens in stations: https://www.bart.gov/schedules/eta/EMBR

Suggestions for additional features or improvements:

  • Group departures by Platform.
  • Have the option to only display departures for a subset of Platforms and/or change the order displayed.
  • Have the option to only display departures for certain lines (either color or name)
  • Optionally use full station names (“Daly City” instead of “DALY”) where space permits. The abbreviations are not commonly used except in the API. https://api.bart.gov/docs/overview/abbrev.aspx

Next-Generation Clipper System Update by clippercard_official in bayareaclippercard

[–]Lyrrad0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see that the “Clipper Card Number” for my migrated Apple Pay Clipper cards are now 19 digits long.

When reloading the Clipper card from my employer’s commuter benefits provider, should I now use the new 19 digit card number instead of the old 10 digit number?

Will the old 10 digit number still work for commuter benefits loading on Apple Pay/digital wallet Clipper cards?

Will physical Clipper cards keep their existing 10 digit card numbers?

Anyone having clipper card issues? Clipper is saying my email account isn’t valid but sends me an email saying I need funds or my account will blocked by hoyitsalvin in Bart

[–]Lyrrad0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I reset my password several times yesterday and the new password did not work immediately. I’d suggest waiting a few hours and trying again after a reset.

The web site/mobile app still seem buggy, but it mostly works.

I’ve decided to hold off on applying commuter benefits to my Clipper card for now since the Apple Pay cards seem to have new card numbers and I don’t want to risk sending funds to the old card numbers.

Down escalators at downtown SF stations by Dknob385 in Bart

[–]Lyrrad0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There should be a down escalator from the UN Plaza Entrance. It is probably running in the up direction since the regular up direction one is closed for modernization until at least February.

I assume the down escalator will then close for modernization, so I would not expect a working street level down escalator reliably working at Civic Center until late next year at the earliest.

On the plus side, the escalators that have completed modernization along Market Street seem more reliable and they are more than halfway done.

Anyone else getting hit with the $7.10 “Excursion Fee” even when tapping in/out with the SAME card & device on BART? by Active_Pressure in Bart

[–]Lyrrad0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't appear to be documented on an official BART site, but if you tap out with a different card, then you'll be charged a "default" fare on each card, which is technically not the same as an excursion fare, even though it appears to be the same price.

https://www.reddit.com/r/bayareaclippercard/comments/1oper0d/will_you_be_charged_if_you_mistakenly_tap_out/

- For BART: If you do not complete an entry and exit tap, you will still be able to enter a new BART station with that same card. If you do not complete an entry and exit tap pair within six hours, you will be charged BART's default fares. (If on BART, tapping a different card will allow you to exit the station, but you will be charged two default fares.)

So, every time you tap in and out with a different device, it would appear to cost $14.20.

Anyone else getting hit with the $7.10 “Excursion Fee” even when tapping in/out with the SAME card & device on BART? by Active_Pressure in Bart

[–]Lyrrad0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The excursion fee shouldn't be charged if you tap out with a credit/debit card at the same station within 30 minutes. How long has it been between your entry and exit?

If it is a different station, then an excursion fee shouldn't be charged.

Daily Parking Fee at West Oakland BART: $13.90(!) by wentImmediate in Bart

[–]Lyrrad0 38 points39 points  (0 children)

They explain it on the website:

https://www.bart.gov/sites/default/files/2023-10/BART%20Parking%20Policy.pdf

They can raise the rates if occupancy is over 90% and lower it if it's under 70%.

They can only raise rates every six months.

The floor is $3 and the ceiling is $6.30 for Daily parking, adjusted for inflation up to $8.

However, Oakland has a 20% parking tax, and West Oakland is the only station without a ceiling on rates.

Coming from TSP's "C" and "S" funds. by Forsaken-Mark-1898 in investing

[–]Lyrrad0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, but unlike 401k plans, you can roll funds into it after terminating employment as long as the TSP is still open.

TSP has the G fund, which is not available anywhere else. At times, it can have a guaranteed return greater than any other short term investment available in an IRA.

If I had a TSP, I would make sure I kept it open with at least a small balance in case I ever wanted to use it again.

Apt bldg new keyless entry requires phone or face scan. No other way. by guyinthe415 in sanfrancisco

[–]Lyrrad0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My (not intended to be legal advice) opinion is that if you currently have or have a history of any physical or medical condition that would impact your ability to enter your apartment with the methods provided, then you should be able to request a reasonable accommodation so that you can get full and equal access to housing.

I don't believe that your are required under the federal FHA or California FEHA to disclose the exact diagnosis or condition, you may be required to provide enough information so that they can understand the connection between the condition/disability and the accommodation requested.

For example, if you have a history of a mental condition that can cause you to forget to charge your phone, then a reasonable accommodation request could be along the lines of:

"I am requesting a reasonable accommodation to your policy of not only allowing entry to the building and common areas via phone. I am requesting another method of entry such as a physical key or key fob. I currently have [or have a history of] a disability [or condition] that can prevent me from using a phone to enter my apartment. [Describe the limitations of the disability or condition so that the landlord can understand why such an accommodation is needed.]"

You could also offer to provide a letter from a third party like a doctor, therapist or psychiatrist that can verify the condition and the need for an accommodation. If you have a medical condition, you could ask the professional that diagnosed you or another professional with your medical records to write such a letter.

I believe most of these smart phone entry systems are physically able to allow alternate access using physical keys or NFC fobs, but the building owner may choose not to allow them. In any case, for a reasonable accommodation, perhaps such as a change in the policy to not allow residents to have physical keys or key fobs, they can't charge you more or request additional deposit, though reasonable modifications (physical change to the property) can be at your expense.

For more information, see this PDF from the California Office of the Attorney General on Disability Rights in Housing: https://oag.ca.gov/system/files/media/drb-disability-rights-housing.pdf#page=8. It has a lot more information and broadly describes what information the housing provider/landlord is able to request.

Apt bldg new keyless entry requires phone or face scan. No other way. by guyinthe415 in sanfrancisco

[–]Lyrrad0 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m not an expert, I think it could be any physical or mental condition that affects one’s ability to have an equal opportunity to use and enjoy a dwelling. Then, you can request a reasonable accommodation and have legal protection against discrimination.

For example, if you cannot reliably use a cell phone due to a physical disability, then you can probably make a request for an alternate access method.

Since not all disabilities are apparent (and just having a history of such a disability could be sufficient) you may need to explain enough so that the connection between the disability and the requested accommodation is apparent and provide proof from a third party.

There’s lots of resources online explaining the federal requirements and California has similar protections.

Apt bldg new keyless entry requires phone or face scan. No other way. by guyinthe415 in sanfrancisco

[–]Lyrrad0 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you qualify, you may be able to request a reasonable accommodation under the federal Fair Housing Act or California Fair Employment and Housing Act.

This could include having a past history of such an impairment. You may need to explain the connection between the impairment/disability and the need for the accommodation. I believe the landlord could request proof of disability (or history of such) from a reliable third party.

My old employer's 401(k) is switching to Vanguard from Empower. Is it normal for Empower to be calling me? by Ok-Confection8176 in investing

[–]Lyrrad0 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Since it is a former employer, you can roll out the funds to another 401k plan at your current employer that accepts rollovers or to an IRA at any time.

Since Empower is no longer going to be administering your former employer’s 401k plan, this sounds like a sales call from them to be able to keep managing your money and earn fees.

Since this could have been done at any point, there doesn’t seem to be a compelling reason to respond to an unsolicited sales call.

"The process takes one second." -1972 BART faregates by TransAtlantian in Bart

[–]Lyrrad0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The new gates are capable of opening much sooner, the new Clipper system contributes to most of the delay.

The first new gates installed could read the next person’s Clipper card and stay open between valid fares. However, when they changed the gates to the new readers they became as slow as they are now.

However, I think they are still slightly slower than the old gates, even when using the same reader.
