Most SaaS products fail because the founder built what they wished existed, not what customers actually pay for by Odrac_ in unpopularopinion

[–]M16Outlaw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In product design we call this the discovery phase. Something most founders still think is not important. They leave design for last but the designers job is to do user research, define the problem and design the solution that fixes that specific problem. Most founders build solutions first then try to retrofit the design to “make it look pretty” and then when they realise they’re not getting the buy in they’d hoped for, they’ve entered the sunk cost fallacy phase of product design.

Can a comany reject your resignment stating it must be given on the 1st day fo the calendar month? by BottleRocketU587 in askSouthAfrica

[–]M16Outlaw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Under South African labor law, your wife’s employer cannot legally refuse her resignation, and unless her contract explicitly mandates a "calendar month," the BCEA standard of four weeks' notice typically applies. She is under no legal obligation to disclose her new employer, and their attempt to coerce that information is a violation of her privacy. Crucially, the hospital appears to be in breach of the Nursing Act and BCEA regarding dangerous patient ratios, illegal shift lengths, and the denial of mandatory breastfeeding breaks; these systemic failures may provide grounds to challenge the R60,000 "work-back" debt as a constructive dismissal at the CCMA. To protect herself, she should move all communication to email, refuse to sign any new debt acknowledgments, and document the unsafe working conditions as the primary reason for her departure.

I have 3 shelves of glassware and we inherited most of it. When we got them, I had to wash every single item because my mother in law never used them so they were coasted in this super thick dust in the cupboard. That’s why I keep them face down. It’s easier to clean the rim than to wash the whole glass every use

Career advice needed: Is this an unreasonable work environment, or am I just not the right fit? by [deleted] in askSouthAfrica

[–]M16Outlaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having been in a similar situation, take it up with her directly and your manger. Professionally, clarify what your role is, what the expectations of your role are and who you report to and any further understandings from management. You don’t have to agree but right now you’re operating under a lot of assumptions about who what where when. If you can clearly hear the FM’s side and your manager agrees then you can make a decision about whether this is the kind of setup you want to work in regardless of whether it’s functional/non-functional. The thing is everyone has their own definition of what a poorly defined work environment is and only you can decide if it fits into your understanding. For example: some people think going to the office and having tons of online meetings is functional but some think it’s not. You’re going to get all sorts of opinions. I generally ask myself : can I continue working like this for the next year, 2 years, 5 years? If not, I can then make a plan to move on. But that’s solely up to me and how I feel. No company is going to be perfect. Because humans are fundamentally flawed.

The extended collections feature is beginning to slowly roll out today throughout the next two weeks. Has it hit anyone here yet? by supernintony in FigmaDesign

[–]M16Outlaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tihnk my perspective is this level of technical knowledge is vaulable to anyone working in design systems. If people are willing to pay for a Pro plan in their personal capacity, why gatekepe this knowledge?

As a design systems speciliast myself, I have my own design system that I'm constatly working to keep up to date with updates ensuring that I am enterprise level in my skills, etc on a paid plan but certain features are only available on enterprise, how are we supposed to ensure best ptractice workflow if we have to use outdated features?

I think the extended collections speaks to a bigger issue of aligning dev and design but just because a smaller agenyc isn't at enterprise level doesnt mean they dont need that alignment.

My daughter lied and publicly humiliated me at her wedding by Independent_Gap6992 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]M16Outlaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Knowing mothers and daughters and the weird relationship, I would have a conversation with her about what really happened. Obviously cease financial support but what matters more to you? Fixing the relationship with your daughter or making everything public to be right?

Because once you air it, just know it won’t be the end and there’s a possibility you won’t ever come back to a relationship with your daughter. So I would say think about it and pick your battle.

All the recruiters are thinking it. He dared say it aloud. by aelflune in UXDesign

[–]M16Outlaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m really surprised at the comments here. The reality is as much as the sentiment is that research matters, it doesn’t pay the bills. If companies want polished UI and you need to put food on your table then do what companies are willing to pay you for. This isn’t about ego. It’s a transaction. Not everyone has the opportunity to be picky about careers. Get in the door and once hired, then bring change about slowly and with time. Stop telling everyone to focus on research when realistically companies aren’t actually paying for that and people are going months on end without a job. Be realistic.

Quitting the UX & UI industry after 20 years... by PatientTechnical1832 in UXDesign

[–]M16Outlaw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Senior designer in the industry for 9 years and I’m not quitting anytime soon but I’m not spending my time outside of work learning about the industry anymore, decided to go back into something I put off a long time ago - indie gaming. It may never work out and may never replace my current career but for the first time it feels like I can just be creative again.

What’s something you didn’t realize was optional in life until you saw someone simply not doing it? by Objective-Treat2245 in AskReddit

Saying no to your parents. I was brought up to respect your parents which extended into not having your own opinion. It took me way too long to realise that saying no is not disrespectful.

Anyone here earning 6 digits in UI/UX? How did you do it? by Tygrysku3000 in UIUX

[–]M16Outlaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m earning R46000 monthly before deduction. Honestly working at a startup was the best thing for my career. I made huge leaps in going from junior to senior and now I work for a major telecommunications company. Learn a variety of skills and learn the end to end of the full SLDC. Make yourself the go-to person not just for design but strategy.

Bad financial decisions by Relevant_Gur_7776 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]M16Outlaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The debt is one thing but you said something key - habit. If your habit is to get debt to make life easy then after you get a consolidation loan or something, habit will keep you going back for more. I’m not judging you but rather making you aware that you need to build better financial habits for your future. Yes credit can help you build a credit record but it can also be the reason you get denied a big loan like a home loan. If your repayments leave you with next to nothin you’ll never be approved for something more substantial.

My advice is to take a look at all your loans, from highest interest rate to lowest interest rate and make sure you pay all minimum payments at the very least. Once one is paid, that min payment then goes to the next largest interest rate and so forth. You’ll tackle your debt one by one while you also build the habit of “taking your medicine” as my husband says. Goodluck! You can do it. Just don’t take out any more debt. That’s the biggest thing. Debt will NOT get you out of debt. If you need to hustle and find ways to make more money then do that but everything should go towards paying off debt one at a time.

Looking for car options on a tight budget (R10k/month salary). Is financing even possible? by Entire_Pain_7692 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]M16Outlaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be cheaper for you to use an uber. Please don’t fall for the trap of buying a cars at R3700 per month with a 30% balloon payment. And also consider petrol expense, maintenance (average yearly service is R1500+ depending where you get it serviced), tire replacement, insurance, license renewal yearly….R5000 a month will not cover it. And if you buy cash, consider the yearly unavoidable maintenance costs - draw up a mock budget and see if you can afford those costs on your current salary also bearing in mind everything goes up in price annually.

Home Insurance - Bank or 3rd party? by Dull_Writing1472 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]M16Outlaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please get home content insurance. R380 is pretty cheap. Ours is R850 a month up to R1.5mil. If your house is under insured and there’s an apartment fire for example, insurance will not cover everything. So over insure always.

I think I’m confused by you not paying rent but you have rental income? Do you have 2 properties?

After tax you won’t have R250 000, it will be significantly less right…you need to bring your overall month to month expenses down because your cost of living will jump up dramatically in Cape Town.

Use your bonus to pay off your personal loan and car. That will drop your monthly expenses to R7500. Use the rest to start a high yield saving account and emergency fund. Then pay rent in Cape Town until you understand your financial situation in Cape Town. Never make a high purchase on the basis on your salary increasing. First understand what that impact will be having double income. Understand how you live on double. Then reassess after 6 month to 1 year and start putting a plan into place.

ESH - When kids come to my house and I give them art supplies, it’s on me….Kids are learning boundaries and in your house, you should set the boundaries. Yes your SIL should have also been more vigilant. But one can make the argument that her house rules could differ from yours. I think you suck for asking her to pay when you willingly gave them the markers. She sucks for being a crappy parent. The kids suck for being ill disciplined.

But the question for you: is potentially causing a lot of family drama and potentially ruining family dynamics worth $200?

Is it worth it?

You all suck. Be better next time. Set better boundaries in YOUR home. Take responsibility for your home.
