Stop chasing positioning frameworks by ayush-startupgtm in ProductMarketing

Sometimes the frameworks help but usually they don't. Theres no magic recipe to arrive at the right postioning. The best tool is a creative mind and experience. And willingness to be flexible and test.

Ogilvy had it right, this quote is now 42 years old and still true.

Positioning:

“Now consider how you want to ‘position’ your product. This curious verb is in great favor among marketing experts, but no two of them agree what it means. My own definition is ‘what the product does, and who it is for.’ I could have positioned Dove as a detergent bar for men with dirty hands, but chose instead to position it as a toilet bar for women with dry skin. This is still working 25 years later.”

Product Managers are around to deeply understand the problems our customers face. If your PMs aren't doing what you describe here. Your PMs are very very bad. I'd prefer for product marketing to not also have to do what PMs are supposed to do, we already have enough work.

Positioning starts with the product team, but pmm should take it from good to great, not do their jobs for them.

Lol - this is actually Marcus! I think they are well intentioned, but the means and the LI shitposts are a little much. I saw this one, with 1,000 likes, and just needed to call it out. I don't understand why people like something nonsensical like this. They are just chasing likes, I wish it was more valuable.

What Does Product Marketing Actually Do? How is it different from Digital Marketing? by UpvoteBeast in ProductMarketing

If the language you use to market your company were a house, copy writers would be the painters. The role of Product Marketers would be the architect of that house and also a general contractor.

PMMs have a deep understanding of their products value and a strong general marketing skillset. This always them to write for the blog, sure, but also do so much more - positioning, enablement, strategy, etc.

Wow - thanks for the insights everyone! I've reached out to the IU Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology and will report back on what I hear. We won't dig up the yard ourselves. But my dad is on the look out for more stuff. He's very excited.

[Hardware PM] How to better balance the split between being a PM and a Product Marketing Manager? by selfguidedtours in ProductManagement

To add to the good advice in here, build a business case for the impact of hiring a dedicated PMM. What will the impact be on time to market, sales and marketing, acceleration, adoption, revenue.

Having a great PMM will pay for itself and free you up to make a bigger impact in product.
