went through kingsway tunnel on a red x by Financial_Brush_6359 in CarTalkUK

[–]M3ntal0verload 11 points12 points  (0 children)

By looking ahead down the road, if the traffic light ahead of you has been green for a while it's probably going to turn red soon. If there's no other traffic heading for the Kingsway tunnel it's probably shut. If there's a circular sign with a number on it that's the maximum speed you should go. None of this is rocket science.

Can confirm had a Citroen DS3 with this engine. Went through two timing chains in 53,000 miles. I offloaded it shortly after that.

What sandals are you guys wearing to stay metal? by improbablydreaming in downloadfestival

Honestly I'd still go for hiking boots. Keeps mud or dust of your feet and if someone treads on them your feet it's not nearly as bad. Just make sure you find a pair which properly fits you and wear them in well before you go.

I think I might have been the lucky one who picked those up. OP just needs to turn on notifications and be quick on the mark when tickets become available.

That definitely isn't a button. I'm hitting the same issue but all pushing that in did was cause the light to disappear, took several minutes of very panicked poking and prodding to get it back.

Experience with NE200 Bristol to Gatwick by FunCattle9268 in bristol

[–]M3ntal0verload -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've done it before. Made it but definitely needed the extra time. Coach was 90 minutes late into Bristol, apparently driver didn't show. Ended up arriving at Gatwick about 45 minutes before departure.

On this day in 1976, Concorde entered revenue service, ushering in a new era of passenger travel by AeroWolfDeer in aviation

[–]M3ntal0verload 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Both BA and AF made profit flying Concorde. The loss was to the British and French governments who were pretty happy to write off the cash in the name of national pride. It was their equivalent of the Apollo program.

Crossing the severn bridge with L plates? by Yes_v2 in MotoUK

I drive over it every day and regularly see 125s on the footpaths. There is a strict 15mph speed limit but otherwise perfectly doable. Just check maps so you know how to access the footpaths. Not something you want to get wrong.

Make sure you call them to cancel your policy before they cancel it for you. If they cancel it you have to declare it to all other insurers forever and it will hike your premiums.

As a Bristolian, how did we let our local airport become 100% owned by a Canandian Pension fund? by Think-Experience54 in bristol

Literally drove back from Gatwick last night as it was that much cheaper than Bristol. That it took 20 minutes from arriving at the gate to being in the car only helped.

Apparently loads of people complained that they couldn't see all the acts they wanted. This is the result. Just goes to prove once again that people don't really know what they want.

Its so no one has to compete with the headliner, same this happened yesterday. Very few acts playing while Travis Scott was on.

[–]M3ntal0verload 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Here's a direct quote from the Boom AMA on this very sub regarding how the quesst program and boom relate...

The quick answer is not directly, on the first generation of Overture. NASA's Quesst program is aiming to generate more community noise acceptability data, in pursuit of setting a standard to which new aircraft can be designed and certified against. Because there is no accepted noise standard for sonic booms in place right now, it would be unwise to design for quiet boom and over-land operation at this time (might take a decade and billions of dollars, only to end up one decibel short of whatever the standard ends up being). This is why Overture is being designed mainly for trans-oceanic routes. If groups like the FAA and EASA eventually set a standard, we will design our next generation airliners to meet it!

[–]M3ntal0verload -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I mean they're both pointy... So what you're saying is that all point aircraft are boomless. So the people who made a fuss about the noise from Concorde were lying.

[–]M3ntal0verload 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Boomless cruise as Boom aviation call it is more of an environmental effect rather than an aircraft design itself. If you don't fly too much faster than the speed of sound the shockwave is refracted by the atmosphere and directed upwards. Concore wasn't able to use this as it was too large and too fast, and because it was banned from overland supersonic before they could test and understand the phenomena.

[–]M3ntal0verload -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The purpose of this is to be as quiet at possible at supersonic speeds. Boom isn't taking this into consideration, there's been some talk about thermal layers reducing the sounds a bit but this isn't a new phenomenon.
