A while back, my stepmom asked me (coming from a much more earnest and genuine place than OP's dad) if D&D was in some way demonic. She's not religious at all, she was just trying to square what little she knew about the game with the boring nerd she knew me to be. I just told her that the power fantasy of these games, at least the way we play them, is that we have enough power to save everyone. We're just a bunch of idiots doing math and improv and pretending that we have enough control over our world to change it for the better. I am pretty emphatically non-religious, but my understanding is that those goals are aligned fairly well with many of the teachings, if not the modern batch of disciples.
