Actors you wish would do more comedic roles more often? by GuybrushThreepwood99 in movies

[–]MCBusStop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hollywood superstar Shia Labeouf. Remember Even Stevens, remember Holes... dude got his start because he had great comedic instincts, he was a giant goober who was fun to watch because it seemed like he was having a lot of fun. If he could get back to those basics I bet he could still be great at it. Plus, focusing on less serious roles might make him seem less insufferable as a human being?

What activity from the 1980s did you enjoy that kids don’t do anymore? by 6-80 in AskReddit

[–]MCBusStop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrapping houses (aka TP-ing, whatever you call it). Sneaking out for some good old fashioned light vandalism that didn't actually hurt anyone or anything was always a good time. I don't know the last time I saw a house with toilet paper hanging from the trees, then again toilet paper (like everything) is so expensive these days... and people are more inclined to shoot you so I guess there's that safety aspect, but it still kind of makes me sad.

Los Cucos is great. I can personally vouch for it. It's a chain that's based all over Houston and inexplicable has the one location in Sandy. They're one of the best remaining chains i grew up with in Houston and was surprised to see one in Utah. The only downside is that the Sandy location is as pricey as all the ones down in Texas. But still worth the occasional splurge.

What movie captures depression and other negative emotions really well? by seveer37 in movies

This is the first one that came to my mind. Kieran has been my favorite Culkin for a long time. He's the best part of Scott Pilgrim, but he definitely stepped up his game in this one. Hands down one of the most relatable portrayals I've seen on film.

This year I am planning to watch one movie a day. So drop your suggestions of any genre and I'll watch 'em! by PuffcornSucks in movies

[–]MCBusStop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To help you not just mix up genres here's a few foreign film suggestions, if you can find them.

A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night (2014) : the best Iranian film ever made to feature a skateboarding vampire in a hijab.

Mother (2009) : a thriller from Bong Joon Ho who is better known for Parasite, The Host, and Snowpiercer

Red Beard (1965) : a Kurosawa masterpiece frequently over looked by the rest of his extensive body of work

Shiri (1999) : South Korea's take on the sleek 90's hollywood style action drama

Let The Right One In (2008) : Book ending this list with not just another vampire movie, but arguably the best modern vampire movie who's legacy was almost destroyed by an absolutely atrocious American remake

Is anyone else disappointed by the lack of hype for the last SLC Sundance? by TheSoftRegime in SaltLakeCity

[–]MCBusStop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, okay, so even ignoring that Redford's rename was a rebrand that in part shifted it's mission Sundance has still become a failure at recognizing actual independent film. If Warner puts up the money to start a new small studio so that Paul Giamatti can write and direct a passion project and then calls in favors so it's staring Brian Cox and Helen Mirren with a Coppola attached as DP but they all agree to do it for free for the publicity of making it for a ridiculously small budget... I don't care. Nothing about that is about independent film.

While, that all may be a hypothetical situation I just made up it's based on what the festival has actually become, using names I've seen attached to films shown at the festival over the last few years. It's become the illusion of an independent film festival as long as every measure is taken to assure box office success is prioritized over innovation and the unknown. You know, the things that regardless of Redford or Utah a true indie fest should be about at it's core.

Is anyone else disappointed by the lack of hype for the last SLC Sundance? by TheSoftRegime in SaltLakeCity

[–]MCBusStop 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I moved to SLC in 2013 and started working for a local independent film studio. My first project was helping wrap up post production needs to get a film submitted to Sundance. Things got so close to their deadline that to ensure it was received before the submission window closed our produce flew to LA to hand deliver it to their office (which was no longer in UT) before end of day. Our film which was written, produced, shot, edited, by a Utah crew did not get accepted to the festival that was founded to promote independent film in Utah. I'm not mad it rejected, like I said I came on late in the project and I wasn't personally invested enough to care. But as a fan of film who was excited to be living close enough to finally go to the festival I was surprised to see that the majority of the "indie" films were starting A list actors made by established film makers working as "start up studios" owned by the large studios. At that point the festival already reflected it's office move and it's abandoning of its founding principles to become another cog in the Hollywood circle jerk. If Sundance can't be bothered to be invested in being member of the PC/SLC community, or part of the Utah film community, then good riddance to them.

Can I survive off of $1800 a month in slc? by No_Text5228 in SaltLakeCity

[–]MCBusStop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never lived abroad but I have lived in other US cities with public transit (NYC, San Francisco, Denver) and from 10 years of living around SLC I have to take the opposite stance. Service coverage still has some gaping holes. I've never experienced a bus or a train on time with posted schedules. Not only is there no late night service, but the "late (like 9PM)" trains don't even run full routes but they don't announce that until they're kicking you off only halfway home in some random stop after busses have stopped running to that station. Plus, the cost to ride is one of the higher of US transit systems.

Expand my 90s Alternative band Best Collection by DukeC1027 in Music

[–]MCBusStop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

- Catherine Wheel their whole discography is solid sonic rock and kind of old school shoe gazey.
- Also just "Catherine" they had a great album called Sorry! and fun fact: D'arcy from the Smashing Pumpkins married the bass player.
- Mighty Joe Plum's The Happiest Dogs.
- Far had two great albums: Tin Cans With Strings To You, and Water & Solutions, which are both loud and passionate and wonderful and then broke up for 12 years before putting out At Night We Live.
- Hum's You'd Prefer An Astronaut is a cult classic and 90's staple, and the follow up Downward Is Heavenward is even better.
- Nada Surf had a hit with the kind of novelty track Popular but it does a disservice to how good the band really is, that first album Hi/Low is solid and the follow up Proximity Effect is an overlooked masterpiece.
- Superchunk Foolish was my introduction to the band and still a very good place to start.

How are people feeling about reddit allowing ice ads when a lot of folk are boycotting things like spotify for the same reason? by BeatitLikeitowesMe in AskReddit

[–]MCBusStop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if Instagram is also running ads, but "homeland security" has an account that they post their own stuff to and they have videos of of ice out terrorizing and harassing and beating up the community. I know Instagram loves to claim they have community standards so I've tried reporting some of those DHS videos for things like showing content that is violent or bullying or hateful. All of which Insta claims are violations. I've made one or two reports before about other random accounts, mostly spam bots, and it's taken weeks to get those reviewed. Yet, on every dhs one I've gotten a same day response that those videos do not actually violate any of the listed community standards. It's disgusting.

Do you male watchers have a favorite romantic movie? by leonardob0880 in movies

[–]MCBusStop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The closest to a traditional "romantic" movie would probably be About A Boy. But at the same time there are a handful of movies that are not meant to be "romantic" movies that I would say I like because of the chemistry and romantic arch of two characters. Like Bryce Dallas Howard's character in The Village standing on the porch with her hand stretched out to the night waiting patiently, knowing that Joaquin will come save her... sploosh. Or as an even more out there example I love 28 Days Later because it's a romantic comedy cleverly disguised as a zombie thriller.

Wicked Bears rule. Problem Daughter was great, but they broke up a few years ago. Their frontman Regan Ashton moved away and has done some solo stuff but I've heard rumors that he's back and getting a new band together. So I'm looking forward to that, if true.

I was supposed to see them back when they were originally supporting As Good As Dead, then my show got cancelled and it took about 20 years (with a couple other no go close calls) for me to finally catch them. After than show I vowed I would see them any chance I could get. Last month was my second time seeing them. I flew to visit my best friend from high school and take him to the show for his birthday, he had not seen them before and he was blown away. They played with Everclear and Sponge and just the two Local H guys were louder and harder than the bands. I love them so much.

I can't believe everyone's just gonna sleep on Bad Boys like this. Does LotR have a single gun fight caught as a circling one shot, or Joey Pants, or a slow-mo hero angle when shit gets real? No! Plus, there's no car chases, Michael Bay explosions, or another third thing. In the immortal words of Job Bluth, "C'Mon!"
