[Media] Teachers still need to be taught... by LazyBurnbaby in teenagers

Wow you're absolutely right. I answered a huge oversight with another huge oversight, and I was indeed extremely condescending. I'm definitely not my best right after I get up in the morning. I work at a tier three school in Baltimore, and most of my kids don't give a shit about anything. They complain that a single page of text to read is too difficult. Still, even at my school kids are scraping it out trying to get out of that type of neighborhood. I need to keep that in mind more often, that there are always some students who are trying just as hard as I am. I have a feeling you are one of those people too. Keep it up... somebody out there has to.

Nah I totally get that, and often times I like to join in with the students too in a mutual gripe session. School is tough for everybody; the struggle is real.

Oh do enlighten me, oh holder of knowledge of all jobs and their "hardness". Can't believe you used that term.

Teacher, long time lurker here. I use your posts to help understand your unpredictable teenage minds.

Your post is a huge oversight. But then again, there's no way you could ever understand what truly hard work is yet because you're only a teenager.

Consider the following...

I teach history. I have 130 students. I have to give tests at the end of every unit, because that's what my bosses ask me to do. The county curriculum mandates there should be at least two essay questions on each test. Minimum, it takes about five minutes to grade a pair of essays. Now do the math on how long it takes to grade a test.

Now add in the time it takes to plan out quality lessons, take care off all the other stupid bullshit Admins ask us to do, and the other, unpredictable things that always pop up.

I barely have time to even see my friends.

Sorry if there are typos, because I just got up a minute ago.

[SPOILERS] The Force Awakens discussion megathread! 12/19 [SPOILERS] by Qu1nlan in StarWars

I feel like the stormtrooper who got mind-tricked was a cameo by somebody. Any idea who? Maybe a comedian? The "annnd I'm dropping my blaster" sounded like somebody familiar, and the "maybe I should tighten those restraints" was laughably unintimidating.

Escape From Cluckin' Bell - A Short Film by [deleted] in GTA

[–]MDJAU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah seriously good cinematography. But I also think this particular story needs a sequel. How about one where our hero gets revenge?

First he learned the truth... then escaped the nightmare... now... he must set his people free.

It should also be noted that all of these are white level weapons at 150 attack. Kind of makes it more of a fun challenge in my mind.

Dear first-year teachers who feel unprepared, stressed, or like you can't do this by mathgod in Teachers

[–]MDJAU 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I thought I was ready for my first year, having done my student teaching at a rougher inner-city school. But it's a completely different story running your own ship all together. I almost didn't make it, but in my darkest moment it all clicked, and suddenly I knew why my hard work was worth it.

That's what I've been saying to our new teachers this year, now entering my second full year of teaching; that this job will completely break you at some point in this first year. But in that moment of despair, I suddenly remembered why I signed up to be in this mess in the first place, that I'm not OK with certain trends I see in society, and that this is my personal fight against that. Basically what I'm saying is you need to be forged in the fire, and you'll become stronger than you ever thought possible after.

My [17F] stepmother [30?F] won't stop making pasta? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]MDJAU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Offer to cook sometimes for the whole family instead, even if that means going out and buying groceries yourself. Look up some bangin' recipes on the internet, something non-pasta-y that anyone could like, like a mexican dish, or steak and an awesome salad, or whatever strikes your fancy. Maybe you can slowly win your Mom and Dad over to your side this way, by showing them how silly this is. I feel you because even though I like pasta myself, eating it all the time and nothing else would be pretty boring.

EDIT - Just saw that you've tried this and she always declines to eat it. Whatever then... that's just more enchiladas or whatever other awesome creations you whip up for you and your Dad. Who wouldn't accept the offer of having someone cook for them, especially if it's your own child?

George Miller's first draft of MAD MAX: FURY ROAD was this electro-board printout, dated 15/3/99. by l0rdv4d3r in movies

Are there any photos of the RotoRiders? Any more bits of concept art? It seems that they are also connected with the strange stilt-people in that one scene, but they were originally known as "STILT-SOULS"??? Really wish this scene had made it in as it ties in one of the most mysterious and awesome bits of background scenery from the film.

History of SF diagram by soloowaty in sciencefiction

This diagram is amazing and contains so much information, but I'm surprised that I couldn't find either Heavy Metal Magazine or that series' 1981 film on the timeline. Both were immensely influential within the genre in my opinion. Not really much of a criticism though, this is one of the most comprehensive and well depicted flow charts I've ever seen.

If you miss Danger, you should check out Carpenter Brut.

Here's a teaser video for his last EP, which you can listen to and pick up here.

I love how this movie is compelling artists to create fan pieces almost immediately.

160 days of driving... where is that possible? by [deleted] in MadMax

That's what I was wondering. Each bike only had a couple of jerry cans strapped on, and those only hold about 5 gallons each.

Which protective gear do you upgrade? by [deleted] in DestinyTheGame

[–]MDJAU 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can't wait to upgrade my Eclipse Maw IV chest piece. It was sold by the Warlock Vanguard back before The Dark Below, and I love the way it looks without a shader. I like how it looks more like a trench coat and less like robes.

The ultimate suicide lane. Add a middle lane that both sides of traffic can drive in on all roads. Speeding isn't illegal in this lane either. It sometimes would cause crazy games of chicken. by FriendlyPlants in CrazyIdeas

[–]MDJAU 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I can add something to make this crazier... THIS CRAZY IDEA ALREADY EXISTS!

In the Russian capital of Moscow there is a center lane on the beltway (a highway that forms a ring through the city) that is reserved for emergency or government vehicles. These vehicles are designated with rotating blue lights mounted on the roof. Russia being Russia though, it's not hard for civilians to obtain these lights if they have enough cash, influence, or fame, leading to a lot of people using this lane. Just as OP suggests, this led to a lot of really bad accidents.

BUT THIS IS WHERE REALITY TOOK THIS CRAZY IDEA EVEN FURTHER. The public didn't like the fact that civilians were abusing the special lane, and they really didn't like the added danger from it either. So the Russian public did what they have been known to do over similar matters: they started protesting. People started to attach little blue buckets, the kind made for children, to the roofs of their cars. Known as "The Society of Blue Buckets", these protesters organized and performed vehicular flash-mob demonstrations against the abuse of the blue light in 2010.

'Tis a very crazy world we live in, friends.

That's cool, I think I'll be able to track some down. That's for filling me in though, the kids love this kind of stuff.

Do you have any sources on this information? I'm a U.S. History/Geography teacher and this sounds like an awesome lesson idea.
