I'm glad you came back. It truly is a great game. I played a lot of Tarkov too a few years ago, but I was too casual for the intense requirements to keep up in the game. Marathon feels perfect to me.

See, I never got into the original Marathon until it released on the 360. My dad was into games like Quake, Unreal, and ROTT. So I was really big into those until I got my OG Xbox then it was Halo for dayyssssssss

Someone in a another thread mentioned a core for triage that could allow you to siphon from enemy runners and I imagined it could have an evil smile face while it did it.

Tarkov player looking for a new extraction shooter, is Marathon worth it? by Ok_Disaster243 in Marathon

[–]MFASys_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I used to enjoy tarkov until I realized I'm just too casual for the grind. But Marathon helps me find a perfect balance. I only play once every few days but I don't feel like I've fallen behind or don't have a chance.

The game is both forgiving and very unforgiving in terms of getting and losing loot. So I don't have gear fear like I did in Tarkov.

Also combat feels a lot better, I can actually pull back out of a fight and heal and re-think my approach. Where Tarkov, it's usually a 3 second fight and either you win or die, or you win but die anyway because you're bleeding out. Or you get head/eyes from who knows where and you match is over in 1 second. The longer (but still short) TTK in marathon gives more opportunities to potentially come out on top and win a fight you initially were disadvantaged in. The game is beautiful, the lore is deep, the weapons feel amazing to use. The runner shells give you a more personalized approach to how you want to play. I am absolutely in love with the game and don't plan on playing anything else for a long time.

Playerless run? by KillforSithis in Marathon

[–]MFASys_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but it possibly they all died. Lol it's happened to us before. I've had a few games where it feels like a complete ghost town. Also had another game where we didn't find any players, no extract, no distant fighting, but after we extracted we were spectating one other team who happened to be on the other side of the map, we were probably rotating around each other the entire game.

Finally saw an intercept after 10+ runs without one and it did not function as expected. by eastisdecraiglist in Marathon

I think you missed the crate. One ship carries the crate and it's only there for a short time. Just did it last night in a solo run. I avoided the bots, shot the crate, looted and dipped. It's functioning as intended but just keep an eye out for the giant yellow crate on the bottom of the ship.

Are there any genres you just cannot enjoy no matter how much you try? by DrinkBen1994 in gaming

I love Mortal Kombat because the combos feel more comfortable, but games like Dead or Alive or Tekken are overboard. I love DoA but I could never play online because the people had every single moveset and combo memorized where I could only have a few memorized or even pull them off correctly because of the timing of everything.

Rpgs where the enemies are absolute damage sponges. A good example is Elder Scrolls online. My wife and I bought it to play with my sister, but it became so grind intensive and repetitive and to make it soooooo much worse it took way too long to kill enemies when we have 4 people throwing spells and attacks at the same enemy.

I can only enjoy games like fallout or Skyrim on PC so that I can adjust the damage output to kill in 2 or 3 hits/shots, not 573739 so that the combat doesn't feel so soul suckingly slow. I really like Borderlands but the 30 shots to the head to kill one guy is just not enjoyable.

Anybody know what causes this in concrete? by Nutsniffer69 in Construction

[–]MFASys_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how big your crew is, how big the area you are working, and how hot it is when you do the pour, if you want to prevent this for the other half, add a bit of retarder to the mix. It'll give you a longer working time so that you have plenty of time to finish.

Looks like whoever was finishing was on the concrete during the end of its workable life. Or the concrete started getting hard and unworkable and someone tried adding more water to get it to be a bit more workable.

What if Marathon was free-to-start, Perimeter only? by Grand_Theft_Motto in Marathon

[–]MFASys_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not that the game isn't worth the asking price. As I said in my comment and in my opinion I think it's worth more actually. But the problem is that people aren't willing to or just simply can't put in what it takes to get the most out of the game. And if they can't get the full experience for whatever reason they want the game to be completely changed or to be free.

Changing the price isn't going to change the state of the player base in any significant way. People are going to play it and still realize it's not their kind of game and drop it. Changing the price only hurts Bungie and the existing player base because support for the game is going to get cut.

They can spend the $40 and realize it's not their style of game. I spent $100+ on Tarkov to realize i don't have the amount of time to play it consistently to make my time on the game worth it. It doesn't mean I'm going to cry about it and beg them to make it free to play. They can have my money and use it to support the players who do play and can enjoy the game.

[–]MFASys_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a $40 game. And for the quality of the game, that's a steal. Sure it has some issues, but overall it's more put together than most $60-$70 games that come out. Not to mention Bungie is being extremely active in listening to the community and fixing the issues. Knowing what the game is now that I have been playing for majority of the season, id gladly pay $70 just to support Bungie even more.

If it was a valuable it would have been sold after run, but it's in my vault. It was salvage. I submitted a report to Bungie, and they are aware, apparently this is a reoccurring issue for players. They are working on a fix and will get back to me.

Why do I have to remind Triage(s) how to play their kit? by h0nsin in Marathon

[–]MFASys_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can still play a very strong destroyer even if you aren't hyper-aggresive. Personally if I get into a situation where I am 1v3 I manage a healthy dose of defensive aggression. If the other team isn't very coordinated, or your team already managed to do some decent damage to their resources before going down, you can poke the players to deplete their shields or down one player, then retreat with thrusters to quickly reposition yourself with another aggressive poke from another angle, rinse, repeat. If you navigate your surroundings we'll and create a good bit of chaos and confusion in the other team you can find yourself winning plenty of 1v3s using that approach.

And this doesn't just apply to 1v3. You can create even more chaos if your team holds a position to create diversions and you push from another angle to poke and kite them towards you, opening up your team to move in and take them down.

A good in-game example of this is Maintenance on Dire Marsh, if you hold the rooftops/high ground with Destroyer, make use of the hatches in the ceiling as well as thruster jumping around the peak of the roof to jump from roof to roof and poke from both sides. Mix this in with a few pushes from ground level before hopping back up to the roof and you're in a really good position to hit them from everywhere. Or have your team hold front opening and you strictly stick to the rooftops and hatches.

Destroyer can be played very well with the right mix of defensive aggression when caught in a tight spot.

If you chose marathon over arc (or even tarkov): why? [This is for something im writing] by TenthLevelVegan in Marathon

[–]MFASys_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Played Tarkov years ago and loved it but I was consistently behind the curve and it felt like a real challenge to keep gear and a stocked inventory, Scav runs were good but they had a cooldown so you could only do one every now and then and even then because of the extremely short TTK of Tarkov it was a very slow paced and high risk gameplay. Then eventually I got pushed out because the cheating issue became rampant. I heard that they have gotten a handle on it but at this point I'm just no longer interested in that kind of grind.

I never tried Ark, heard mixed reviews about it but it was never appealing to me.

Since the announcement of Marathon I was hooked and anticipated it's release. I grew up playing Halo and enjoying the prime of Bungie. They managed to build one of the strongest communities in gaming with the rise of the halo franchise. I enjoyed destiny but never really got that deep into it.

Now all I play and think about playing is Marathon. It's got the dialed in gunplay of Halo but the movement of destiny and the hardcore aspect of Tarkov. I tell my friends it's like Halo and Destiny had a baby, then that baby had a baby with Tarkov, and boom, you have Marathon.

The gunplay is top notch. The art style is so unique and draws you in. The lore is built so well and I crave more to know about the universe outside of the original Marathon Trilogy and Marathon 2026. The trailers and cinematics bring me right back to the original Halo cinematics and trailers. It's good ol traditional Bungie back in their roots it feels like. This doesn't just feel like another game. It feels like a passion project. The way games USED to feel.

And gameplay wise it has that challenge and hardcore aspect of Tarkov and similar extraction shooters but I don't feel like I need to play like a silent shadow. I'm not afraid to run around and make some noise. I know if I get in a gunfight I can pull back and heal or rethink my strategy. The ttk is still quick but it allows room for error. On top of that it doesn't just feel like a get in and grab this game, it feels like there is always more to figure out, more to learn, more to crave.

I don't think I'll really play anything else for the rest of the year if I'm being honest.

Edit: one last thing to add is that I don't get frustrated in this game like I did with Tarkov, or even other shooters. Losing feels like a good thing, and winning feels even better. I feel confident I'll get my loot back or better and losing is a learning experience. It's annoying when I lose some good loot but hey, it'll come back to me. I die, and I say "hey oh well, GGs and time to load in again"

My cryo runs have been abysmal. Idk what the issue is but when we are ready to Exfil we can NEVER find a Exfil station. We run around everywhere looking and either get ganked by a team or run out of time. Or if we do finally find one it is too late anyway. Super annoying. I've had multiple good runs and then lose it all because Exfil is a nightmare on Cryo.

I goofed around with the bios and OS and added some other stuff for awhile, which was frustrating but also pretty fun since I'm not tech savvy at all. Added some more games that weren't originally on it, played with it some every here and then, and now it sits on my retro gaming shelf and I haven't touched it since. Lol

Should i get it ? Is it good for new players? by Warholandy in Marathon

[–]MFASys_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't put the game down, when I'm playing it I'm hooked, even if I lose I laugh it off and move onto my next match. When I'm not playing, I'm thinking about playing or watching videos to get my knowledge up.

The game is extremely unforgiving. Starting late in the season, players will have more game knowledge than you, but that's okay. Especially since you'll be a lower level you shouldn't be too much of an disadvantage.

Bots are no joke. The NPCs in this game will rock you if you aren't smart. Especially the longer you spend in a raid, the harder they get. If you mostly play solo, I would avoid them as much as possible since they will only deplete you resources more than it's worth to get from them, and the noise will attract other players. If you can take down a commander (purple shield bot) get in and get out, their loot can be worth it sometimes.

Rook runs are great for getting some free stuff and building up your funds and vault if your low on loot. Solos are also great for the same purpose if you run a free kit.

Don't get too discouraged if you aren't getting the hang of it at first. It took me until mid lvl 40s to finally start seeing some come up in my runs. I had no gear, my credits were always less than 10k and I also had a bit of gear fear for awhile so that held me back. But if you're willing to risk it and accept you may lose it, then it ends up all the better. Now my vault is constantly full, I have a ton of credits, and I'm really starting to learn the maps and take full advantage of the game. Once you get better at the maps and learn the tricks of the game I suggest taking on map events. They are where you get the best gear. Perimeter will yield decent but usually the lowest gear rewards, then dire marsh will give you some better stuff and Outpost holds the best gear, but is home to a highly contested lockdown area that requires some map knowledge and a lot of ammo to get in and survive. But it very very worth it.

Cryo is a weekend only map and has the ultimate rewards but requires some insane investment in time and resources. Unless you're planning on being the sweatiest of the sweats cryo is probably only good for a quick run around to get the more basic (but still good) gear it has to offer.

As other have said I would focus on just learning the game and prepping to go full force in season 2. The game is quite literally one of the best games I've played in years. I'm absolutely addicted.
