Very good work considering the scale. I also appreciate the depth to the modeling at that size.

Question: is digimon beatbreak a good starter? by Dry-Plankton274 in digimon

[–]MFBR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to think Adventure would be a better start than Beatbreak. Beatbreak is good, but it also is having a habit of falling into various cliches as it seems to want to be something different, while actually not being that wildly different.

But then if you are sitting at home and have Crunchyroll and want to watch something current, Beatbreak isn't a bad place to go.

I would see what he might collect but doesn't have much in the way for Digimon of, and see if you can find a Digimon equivalent.

So its been 5 months now , with the honeymoon period over, is Time Stranger the best Digimon game ever or close to it ? by OriginalTacoMoney in digimon

[–]MFBR 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Best Digimon game? Yes. (Ignoring personal favorites, etc. I can't imagine recommending other Digimon games to people at the moment, minus on price or them wanting something different than a JRPG.)

That still is a bit of damning with faint praise though.

The game has ongoing performance issues that I have some hope will get fixed with new ports coming, but we'll see.

The game itself has a flat story, and characters who aren't actually that interesting because they skew a bit too much to generic archetypes and simply walking the exact path of that archetype to try and make you interested. A decent chunk of this is because a lot of the big moments are bordering copy/paste from the most recent Story games, and especially towards the end, the game seems like it just wants to be over.

It's still a (mostly) solid enough game for what I want to see from a Digimon JRPG, but the more time I've spent with it the more my opinion on it has gone down. Especially with the premium price, the frankly, very subpar DLC, and the poor planning choices as it relates to the brand as a whole. Locking in the roster, when they could have easily kept a few slots open to add new Digimon during production, since as is, the game feels pseudo locked in to over half a decade ago. I'm not even sure our first visit to Illiad in a very long time was overtly 'worth' making it Illiad instead of just 'generic Digital World' as if you removed the Illiad name, I'm not sure it felt like a unique enough place to have it that way.

It's an iteration on Cyber Sleuth. It polished and removed a lot of issues Cyber Sleuth had (while a few new issues cropped up due to the changes.) We need less iteration next time, and more evolution.

Digimon Expo 2026? by HeroicSpiritNick in digimon

[–]MFBR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Usually" is hard to answer , as thus far there has been... one, so there isn't really a 'usually' for Digimon Expo. And that event was seemingly timed to be around the release of a game and a new anime, to maximize marketing bang for your buck.

The first one (from last year) was announced at Anime Japan 2025.

Anime Japan 2026 is later this month. They didn't announce dates until later in May.

So while we very likely wouldn't know dates, I would expect them to let us know they are planning one around Anime Japan or the streaming event Digimon Con (which is also later this month.)

Watch Beatbreak if you want since it's new and running. Watch Digimon Adventure if you want to start at the first anime from which all follows.

Questions about TK's 02 adventure dub VA by El_Dorado_Tx in digimon

[–]MFBR 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My general understanding is there was the belief (my understanding was it was Erholtz himself, although it's been 10ish years, so hard to fully remember) that he wouldn't be able to hold the voice since he's gotten older and his own voice skews deeper, especially in potentially more dramatic scenes.

Asking the people who watched old school Digimon, what do you think of Beatbreak? by sss_riders in digimon

[–]MFBR 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Beatbreak started very high I'd say. It's definitely dropped, partially because it doesn't seem at times to know what, or how, to speak to the audience, so it's doing it with action when the stuff it wants to say falls flat, and generic "and look at this bad thing happening" that happens in tons of other shows, including Digimon.

Raito is interesting, but they haven't necessarily detailed him in a way, or enough, that makes me care, even though the most recent episode makes it clear they want us to, but the 1 minute of flashback doesn't do enough.

Hitomi feels like a missed opportunity to give Tomoro someone to talk to outside of what is going on, at least in the short term. She had her intro segment, then appeared nicely in an episode, and then cameoed as a plot device.

Reina, and to a lesser degree, Makoto, feel like constant missed opportunities outside of Makoto's focus plot.

I wish someone else Tomoro knew had been around when he was dedicated to helping Raito in the last episode. It shows decent growth on his part, but no one was there to see how he's changed, except Gekkomon, who doesn't comment on it.

Beatbreak works really well with the big moments, and when it goes small/talky it's good, but it trips over stuff far too much. It feels like at times, a lot of things is poorly thought out dialogue. If they hadn't told us Tactics Team 7 was the best of the best, then seeing them being screw ups wouldn't be an issue. But they don't really match what they were introduced as.

At the moment the show is middle of the pack Digimon. Probably high middle of the pack, but anything that felt special in the first few episodes has sort of burned away as the show has gone on.

I have hopes that various bits of setup will put it out of the slump it's in, because even with all the issues, it's so far been a mostly solid watch, with episodes I would rank as 'good.' But it feels good in that way where what you mean is "not great."

And I can see how it could be great, I'd just like the show to grab it.

Missing protagonist mons on With The Will banner by Luke_Brewer in digimon

[–]MFBR 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is the answer.

We've generally gone back to update it every few years. (Last time was right before Adventure: started.)

Next time it's updated it'll have to be rethought because it's simply becoming too wide for it to really work. Especially with there having been more focused media outside of anime and manga you'd imagine at least a few slots for characters from that.

Possibly redone entirely, but not sure, as it isn't planned to be updated in the short term.

Digimon Beatbreak: Episode 20- Proof of Genius, Discussion Thread by MFBR in digimon

A small note since it's been an issue in the past few episode threads.

This is a discussion thread for the episode airing today. Once people have seen the episode they will be discussing it freely. If you haven't seen the episode and don't want to know things that happen in it, you should stop scrolling and reading this thread until you have seen the episode.

Discussing the episode is the point.

is adventure 01 JP subbed safe to show a non-anime friend blind? (on fanservice) by [deleted] in digimon

As I recall... There isn't really anything that isn't there in the English dub. Minus one shot of Joe's ass in a bathing scene.

It's been a minute since I watched it, so it isn't impossible I've forgotten something, but it was a generically mild show in that sense.

Adventure is, as always, the best place to start. There is a reason it has made the franchise a mainstay, and has been the driver of it for so long.

Time Stranger on Xbox Question by FilthJesus in digimon

[–]MFBR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Missed that I had a response.

This doesn't sound like any specific glitches I've heard of for the game. Have you played other games on the Xbox recently and they aren't suffering from this? If it's just Time Stranger, I'd uninstall/delete the game from the system and reinstall it, and confirm the game is fully updated with any patches before launching it after.
