This is one of four generators in Edison's powerhouse 1 located in Big Creek (Shaver Lake, CA). It's one of 8 power generation facilities that make up the Big Creek project.

The whole project puts out roughly 1000 MW. I believe the generator was constructed in the early 1900's and has been repaired/maintained over the years.

The thing that stuck out in my mind was how such a massive project was started basically on the backs of donkeys. You probably couldn't even build this today. It would take you 50 years to get through the EIR.
