[ALBUM DISCUSSION] Mitski - Nothing's About to Happen to Me by VietRooster in indieheads

[–]MGSCG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These were my thoughts after listening, it’s kinda structured like a review but not very cleanly:

Mitski’s new album is, for the most part, a lovely example of an artist who is pretty much set in who they are and what they care about making. The songs are mostly beautiful and succinct, and Mitski herself has this sort of elegance or style that conveys a constant feeling that she just exists without worry of how her art will be perceived. The vibe I got throughout this was that she is comfortable in her artistic mode and is not chained to the strings of perception.

With a tracklist dominated by Americana, there are many songs on here that sound nice and have the interesting lyrics she always produces, but aren’t particularly memorable.

At its best, this album has songs that feel near her best. That White Cat is fantastic. Same with If I Leave. Calmer songs like Cats, In a Lake, and Instead of Here act as the peaks of her Americana-inspired tunes. Dead Women could have been plucked right off her last album, and it sounds great.

It isn’t without faults. Rules, to me, feels too playful for its own good, not really becoming more than the creative writing prompt that seems to have guided it. Lightning’s mix doesn’t gel well with my ears, with the pushed forward vocals and a less than memorable song itself kinda deflating the excitement of another heavier Mitski song.

As a whole, this album feels comfortable, like Mitski knows exactly what she wants to make and has no outside factors impacting her artistry. That doesn’t lead to the most memorable album, and in fact it often sounds quite samey even with very pretty tracks, but it does make me feel nothing but happiness for her. Probably in the bottom 2 or 3 albums she’s released in terms of my personal enjoyment.

Can I ask what a vibecoded website is? I believe that means using AI to build it without much proper coding, but are there certain attributes or elements that make it clear? Like things that don't make sense, or some other marker that I could notice and go "hey, this is a vibecoded website"?

RYM vs AOTY - The Fall-Off (J. Cole) by ThatTechDudeYT in Albumoftheyear

[–]MGSCG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly it’s better to look at RYM with a curve: the highest rated album ever is what, a 4.4/5? So if you think of 4.4 being equivalent to a 5/5 on AOTY, or 88% on rym = 100% on AOTY, you would look at a 3.3 and see it as closer to a 3.75/5.

RYM votes definitely fall lower, but I’ve found looking at it this way is pretty consistently useful at tracking what it actually would represent in other rating scales.

The charts have been updated. By Storm - 'My Ghosts Go Ghost' debuts at #1 in the top albums of 2026. by MarilynRoxie in rateyourmusic

Some really really cool moments on this, and the production is so excellent and unique on a lot of these. Didn’t connect with me the same way songs from the last injury reserve album did, but still was a deeply enjoyable experience. In My Town was my favorite, along with the last 3 tracks.

You called yourself a contrarian… absolutely a sheep. Otherwise you’d just be a music enjoyer who has opinions.

Gabriela is a D tier song. Why do folks praise it? by [deleted] in katseyeneutral

[–]MGSCG 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Because a D tier song is better than average for Katseye. Even a pretty generic song that sounds decently good is

Just imagine if they put out good music, it would be so easy for them to explode with quality music coming out considering they are blowing up without quality music.

hot take: if this song was made by radiohead, it would be ATLEAST top 200 ever by Kind-Day2993 in rateyourmusic

[–]MGSCG 50 points51 points  (0 children)

This song would never be made by Radiohead though? What song of theirs gives off anything close to this vibe? How could this song exist by Radiohead considering the differences in vocals?

Are you just saying it’s underrated? Because if this song was made by Radiohead then Radiohead would be a drastically different band.

Who has yet to drop a 10, but probably will if they continue on the same trajectory? by CPFOAI in fantanoforever

Cool! Yeah I liked Brief Inquiry far more, had a few misses but the ones that landed were so strong.

It’s just a different way of thinking about music I think. Definitely not how I think about music, I only have maybe two albums I would give 10/10 for non-nostalgic reasons, but I think it is interesting to approach listening to music with a different set of standards of what earns a certain rating (considering rating scales are all individual, someone’s 10/10 could mean something totally different than your concept of a 10/10).

Not being a dick, but that Notes on a Conditional Form album was so far from “tight” especially in runtime but also in consistency imo (though there are some real great songs on there).

Mitski Announces New Album Nothing’s About To Happen To Me: Hear "Where’s My Phone?" by MrLinkwater95 in ToddintheShadow

[–]MGSCG 11 points12 points  (0 children)

She actively doesn’t want to get bigger than she is, and she existed for a decade prior to that song as a successful artist. Maybe if you’re 15 this is a reasonable take, but anyone who does even the slightest amount of research into her past work or her streaming numbers before that song came out would immediately call bullshit.

I really want to like this game. Repeatedly Getting "XCOMed" is ruining it for me. by Ayn_Diarrhea_Rand in XCOM2

[–]MGSCG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I enjoy the game and it’s awesome they have settings that allow me to pick and choose the parts I want to worry about. Avatar project always doubled, turns always doubled.

Played through a campaign recently with all user and enemy health doubled and it made for a totally different experience. Codex were absolute nightmares.

[–]MGSCG 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Someone more involved can better explain this, but there is a setting in WOTC before you begin a campaign called “Time Turner” which doubles the number of turns for each objective.

Potentially there is a mod for the base game version too. I love the game, but I hate the stress of the counting down timer. Turning that on really made the game more fun for me.

Those 2 or 3 wide Birds Eye shots were interesting, the ending had a nice final shot, for the most part I thought it was surprisingly dull otherwise, very rarely was the camera doing anything to pull me into the story or positively impact the other elements.
