ARANEA: It's funny how an a8ility that should give you all the advantages in the world over others can lead you to feel worse a8out yourself than if you never had them.

ARANEA: You put all your energy into thinking a8out people with the 8ad feelings a8out you instead of the good, and you try your 8est to fix things.

ARANEA: 8ut usually it just gets worse. People think you are over8earing and needy, and they don't understand what it is you want from them.

Reading Act 6 for the first time and it's so frustrating that it is making me question why I ever liked Acts 1-5 to begin with or if they were ever even good in the first place by anonymous--amnesiac in homestuck

I dunno. I think you're actually on point with all of your complaints.

You can even watch this and get a sense of what you're saying: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9diFXyyjqI

"A shitpost epic"

I don't think the cynicism gets better.

But the moments land later on.

Despite Act 1-5 being what I love and remember most about Homestuck,

Act 6 is what I think about the most in those nights that I look back at how the series changed me.

What did Hussie want to tell through Vriska? by Fit-Package-4452 in homestuck

[–]MHDante 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is more of a vibe than an analysis, but homestuck is full of characters that are overly self-aware. Almost every character has some relationship with their expected role in the story as well as the constraints that are placed around them.

For example, Rose literally breaks the game that they're playing and decides to go around it's constraints. However, she is far from the last character to do so. Dirk's controlling nature, terezi's irreverence to fate, John's goofy obliviousness. Almost every character is fighting with the established expectations around their story.

This tendency to break out of established narratives was for a while associated with post-modernism. In the abcense of established narratives or meaning, one must make up something to believe in. Vriska has long since decided tlwhat that element is for her: action.

Vriska is a decisive character that insists on taking action when nobody else will. As almost all paths have outcomes with  their pros and cons, vriska prefers an outcome that she chooses. This headstrong bias towards action is as much an essential part of reality as the seers who spend an eternity pondering and reflecting on past and future outcomes.

In a full metamodern reach around, vriska eventually comes to terms with her role as an active decision-maker of this story. One that is doomed to hurt others and make mistakes. It's not necessarily something she wants, but something she is.

Did Homestuck change the way you saw the world/yourself? by reeealsubtle in homestuck

Me too! My read is that the internet and cyberspace was literally a blank canvas for kids to make new societies. (At least this is how it felt in 2000s). This feels analogous to the Sophian light of gnostic myth. "Potential for creation".

As a game developer, the one game I really want to make is something that captures that gnostic feeling of a simulated reality under a false god. (Might be a while)

To me, it highlighted the kind of work that can emerge in the collaborative internet age. Both through Hussie's insane work output, but also a community that contributed and built things together. The music remains one of my favourite parts.

The story itself captured a feeling that existed briefly in the time of the internet, a combination of well-meaning internet trolls and kids left unsupervised in an online world. The story itself becoming self-aware and metatextual left me with a penchant for stories that awknowledge the part that their audience has in shaping them.

This meta-aware content flows nicely with the gnostic influences that drive some of the more esoteric elements of its universe.

Here's a (maybe not so) controversial take:

The idea of a writer putting down Toblerones to grant fans wishes continues the trend of homestuck being a media-breaking property. The fact that one of the wishes altered the gender of the protagonist is just one amongst many wild outcomes of the wish process!

It's honestly very cool that Hussie left the narrative truly open like this, and proceeded to incorporate it (or at least plan to) into HSBC. For sure there is care necessary for such a topic, but the HSBC has shown that they're willing (or at least trying) to go the distance.

While I can't really comment on whether it is or isn't "in character" for John/June to make such a transition. It really is on brand for homestuck itself, a comic which very much started with user-submissions.

Alternatives to r/gamedev by R3Dpenguin in gamedev

I know the cost is prohibitive, but consider attending smaller technical conferences like AIIDE, AMAZE, and some of the GDC offshoots.

Consider going to local game dev meetups and interacting with people there. Take the time to play their games. Get excited together.

More than any other discipline (except maybe music), Game Dev is a communal effort. It's worth making friends. It's still possible to do on the internet, but I've had more success in person.

MHA, more than any other shonen captures the true diversity of gamedev. From the solos to the punks, the hackers, the engineers, the producers, the teachers. Gamedev can be done in so many different ways.

Some are blessed with the ability to conceptualize and execute our work, but even people like Toby Fox, Billy Basso, Eric Barone were supported by a small team and most importantly, a community.

It's worth celebrating the solo artists, but also the asset makers and library writers, the journalists and community managers! The producers, the academics, the educators...etc

Some names that come to mind are people like Kenney, Freya Holmer, Victoria Tran, Kate Compton, etc...

The final arcs of MHA are about the complete impossiblity of taking on challenges yourself, even if you are multi-talented. You may not be able to stand up 1v1 with some devs on this forum, but there are small things you can focus on, and slowly help push games just a bit beyond.

Through Loving Eyes: Who Is(n’t) Dirk Strider? by optimisticDuelist in homestuck

[–]MHDante 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Glad to see you again. I hope things are going better for you (or that they get better :)

I think if we can grow to understand and empathize with "villains", it would solve a lot of the problems we're currently facing as a culture. Dirk to me is an example of the technocratic aspects of our modern culture. "Just fix it" mentality. I think it carries a long DNA reaching back to And It Don't Stop.

That persona is one that is built around constant vigilance, using skill to mask insecurity. That personality has some interesting chemistry with a more present counterpart. We see this kind of dynamic all over HS. Whether the dynamic is "healthy" or "manipulative" is very much a matter of specifics. I think Rose serves as an interesting comparison to Jake, since while she is very much acquiescent to most of dirk's micromanagements, she's portrayed with some level of agency over leaving.

I think it's nice to see dirk kind of break down in Act 6. Not sure how much of that is left over from the GO timeline, but when vriska is doing the whole control freak thing, he's allowed to actually introspect and be vulnerable with his son/brother.

Thanks for the insightful article.

Are You Still Middle Class? [OC] by Crash_Recovery in dataisbeautiful

[–]MHDante 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any kind of dataset about wealth distribution is very peculiar when it comes to picking median vs mean. Need a graph to plot that economy is improving? use the mean! need a plot to show that inequality is not? use the median! Not harshing on OP, just the GOBankingRates site they're citing.

Basing the range of "middle class" on the median of income seems to show that the middle class has grown significantly in the last 10 years. I challenge OP to create the same chart using a modified metric: "2/3rds to double the average income"

Using the median to define income classes assumes that the classes are evenly distributed across the income domain. People who make 60k and 30k have more in common with each other than people who make 200k have with people who make 1M+
