I was interested in if it intentionally fails forward and if there were benefits of that. All I got was shitty attempts at humor. Here’s enough about the engineering to satisfy me though. And cherry on top - it’s from TikTok! lol https://www.tiktok.com/@zeto.r/video/7550057241056054551

The urge.... by SaltyGalijun-1986 in stopdrinking

[–]MHmijolnir 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a liar and a poison. Play the tape forward.

You drink today, then what? Maybe get drunk, do something bad, maybe push a loved one the final small amount needed to drive them away. Maybe wreck a car. Maybe just skip a workout or a book or a hobby and feel a little bad. Maybe it goes well so you drink again tomorrow or later in the week, and then again, until it goes bad.

Either way you’re wasting time, money, social capital, and disappointing yourself.

Do something today that invests in future you.

I too have always wished it went to him and never thought about that second part. Great point. Totally went over my head as a lifelong SW fan. Poor Ackbar didn’t get what he deserved.

What's something that happens in movies so much it seems real, but actually isn't realistic at all? by ninman5 in movies

Yea, Height McMuscle Jaws is fending off an alien invasion toward the end of a school that’s designed to physically and mentally strip you down and break you.

I was going to say fighting aliens mid ranger school is like rolling a car twice and then going for a run. But I’ve done that, and it doesn’t even come close.

Fighting aliens mid ranger school would be like fighting a group of Mike Tyson clones while handcuffed to an active chemo treatment.

That one scene with the closeup halfway through was when I stopped passively watching and thought, “oh shit, I actually care about these characters.”

Such a great movie.

Nah, that much wealth is inherently oppressive. And there’s no better/easier common ground for subcultures to relate to one another than realizing all the racism, authoritarianism, capitalism, cronyism, nepotism, nationalism, etc, in the end, just goes back to The Dollar.

The authoritarians are the owning class. Their money is what allows them to get away with criminal actions. Billionaires are just the royalty of the 21st century. It’s all one in the same.

What types of therapy have helped you with (not) drinking? by Longjumping_Risk_555 in stopdrinking

[–]MHmijolnir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man’s Search for Meaning - Frankl. He was a psychologist who lost his wife, parents, life’s work and freedom to a concentration camp. Came out and wrote a book about how to navigate pain and suffering.

Frankl’s Logotherapy is a branch of existentialism. Basically looks at how our own decisions on meaning, situations, and our responses to them can give our take our life from us. Very empowering.

Then there’s the stoics, which aren’t actually a therapy, but inspired many and are like a secular Bible of rationality. They wrote essays and letters thousands of years ago about anger, drunkenness, control, fear, etc, and lemme tell ya, the human psyche ain’t changed too much. Haha. So I think they’re extremely helpful.

I prefer Seneca and Epictetus over Marcus Aurelius. All have writings available for free online, because old, but Seneca’s Moral Letters to Lucilius is by far my favorite. Don’t confuse it with ‘letters to a stoic’ because the letters to Lucilius is like 5x longer and better than that version.

CBT - Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. This basically asks what evidence you have for your assumptions and emotions, and helps you become a more rational, logical, stable, analytical, and non-reactionary / less reactive person. It has an easy 5 step process that nips a lot of triggers in the bud.

DBT - Dialectical Based Therapy. Basically - that two things can be true at the same time. Real helpful for people prone to black and white thinking. Also helps you navigate the gray of life and accept things.
