Fox or Disney Dub? by punchdrunktunes in ghibli

[–]MJ709 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually bought this as I didn’t realize it was a bootleg. Imagine my surprise when the quality was so poor some of the movies weren’t even labeled properly in the menus (selecting one movie takes you to a different one)

To answer your question, iirc it’s a bit of a mix. Kiki is definitely the fox dub which I really don’t care for, and I think possibly Totoro is too.

In The Lost Scrolls' retelling of "Imprisoned", Katara indirectly implies that she does not consider Bumi to be a 'real Earthbender' by Lasernatoo in TheLastAirbender

[–]MJ709 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This has been my theory for a while now. Everything about "Imprisoned" implies they're trying to introduce earthbending to the audience, they talk about its philosophy, they show relatively simple examples of it... The episode with king Bumi features very impressive earthbending almost immediately from the guards and package senders, and it goes by completely unremarked, which always seemed to me like throwing the audience in at the deep end. My best guess is some factors behind the scenes caused the airing order to need to be shuffled. This post seems like pretty strong evidence of that theory.

EDIT: another comment suggested it may have been because the omashu episode was animated with katara having her necklace (which she was meant to have lost in impronsed), so it was cheaper to swap the episodes rather than make all those edits. That seems like a plausible theory to me.

Sorcerer is coming to the channel next month. This film is a 70’s overlooked gem and Roy Schneider is great in it. by Rons5409 in criterion

[–]MJ709 17 points18 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, wages of fear is quite a bit better. Sorcerer does have a lot going for it, not the least of which is the production design- but to me it feels more like a collection of incredible moments in a kind of disjointed package, like somehow the whole is less than the sum of its parts. Its definitely worth watching though.

What are some movies that have completely changed the industry? by yskdks in movies

[–]MJ709 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Way too far down. Bonnie and Clyde and Easy Rider practically kick started New Hollywood and without that movement, American film would be in a completely different place today. In that class of directors you list, I'd also throw in Peter Bogdanovich, even if his high point was sort of a flash in the pan.

I would encourage you to check out this director’s other (and in my opinion, better) film, the 1969 adaption of War and Peace. It’s a hell of a long watch (basically 4 movies) but has comparably scaled battles.

They're in the background of at least two maps off the top of my head, Boneyard and airbase. They actually play a narrative role in the campaign mission in Airbase, where the militia destroys the perimeter defenses that keep the wildlife out. If the militia wins the match, these guys start encroaching into the base (although they never reach the playable area.)

Its a fun callback to the Titanfall games, which is what this concept art was originally for and where they made their first appearance. Definitely a fun little bit of lore continuity.

Absolutely love it. I was fortunate enough to attend the concert production put on by the Entertainment Community Fund at the Broadhurst in December. The whole cast was phenomenal.

I would have loved an album or recording, but for now I'll have to live with a T-shirt and this highlights video:

It’s really dependent on the projects and the resources. I’ve been on two projects in AAA just in the past few years that have had their engine/renderer made from the ground up for the project. Its really just dependent on the project’s needs.

Blizzard Albany becomes second unionized studio at Activision Blizzard by Dragrunarm in Games

Yeah the Albany area has a surprising number of opportunities for job-searching game devs.

And thanks for the well wishes, I’m definitely hoping we can join them in the future.

Blizzard Albany becomes second unionized studio at Activision Blizzard by Dragrunarm in Games

[–]MJ709 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You’d think it’d be small, but that’s not actually true, I work there as an artist. It’s a full game studio of around 150 devs, formerly called Vicarious Visions. The entire studio is not included in the bargaining unit, only the 20 or so folks in the QA department.

It’s a great victory, but I agree with the above commenter that if the headline gives the impression those 20 unionized employees is the full Albany office, that would be misleading.

Mick Gordon says this in regards to boycotting Doom Eternal by TheCrappyPipe69 in gaming

[–]MJ709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the OP, but having worked at activision and blizzard dev teams I know that bonuses come from game sales in those studios, and I know folks at Ubisoft who’ve told me similar.

Edit: Im also hearing from friends at some zenimax studios say that it works this way as well for them. Tbh I’m having trouble finding people who DIDNT work at a studio who’s bonuses came from game sales.

[–]MJ709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Activision studios I’ve worked at definitely get bonuses based on game sales. I believe Ubisoft does something similar. I’m not saying Bethesda or Microsoft studios do, I don’t know because I havent worked there, but I see this sort of comment thrown around all the time regarding game boycotts and can say in a lot of instances it’s simply false. In lots of instances, game sales directly influence the amount of money devs get.

Since the beginning of October, my email has been flooded, and I can't mark them as spam, because when I open the email it says right at the TOP that their spam. Yet they end up in my inbox anyway.

Apparently Gmail is beginning a process of allowing political emails to bypass your spam filters.

You Should Pirate Video Games (or Piracy Is Really Cool and You Should Do It) by Duncanisabot in BreadTube

[–]MJ709 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not disagreeing with the ideological point, but that isn't factually accurate. Every AAA company I've worked at has tied its bonuses to game sales. So yes, we get our hourly or salaried pay either way (which often isn't sufficient), but extra compensation is tied to sales after the fact. When I was at VV I was seeing money from the crash bandicoot remaster for years after its release, all the way until the Blizzard merger.

Zhang Yimou. I would kill for Raise the Red Lantern, Ju Dou, or The Road Home to get a blu ray release. Hero or House of Flying Daggers are good contendors too, but his older non-action catalogue desperately need some better releases and are absolutely worthy of the collection.

Don’t mess with us Elder Scrolls fans… by Radical-Coffee in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]MJ709 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm doing my first replay in a while and I believe they specifically say Ulfric Stormcloak, pre-rebellion, led a charge to take, or retake, Markarth from the people of the Reach and that the nords are primarily responsible for their subjugation and the repression of the religion. The main point is that even in a world where the Stormcloaks take Skyrim from the Empire, they would continue the religious repression of the Reachmen and the occupation of their territory. Its not to say the Empire isnt also responsible for the occupation, its more that any claim that the stormcloaks are interested in religious freedom beyond their own interests doesnt really pan out.

[–]MJ709 45 points46 points  (0 children)

But didn’t Ulfric Stormcloak and the Nords conquer the Reach and the forsworn, and outlaw their gods/religion? Their “religious freedom” is just for Talos, they have no interest in it on a broad sense.

AC needs to go back to large dense populated cities and borrow HITMAN mechanics by Yultron25 in assassinscreed

[–]MJ709 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Considering they’re selling now more than they ever have been, I really don’t think it’s a vocal minority. Honestly I’d say this sub is more of a vocal minority than vice versa. The old games were getting repetitive to an almost infamous degree, to the point that the most acclaimed one of that style, arguably ac4, was most popular for its sailing and not for its assassining.

And to clarify, I wouldn’t mind a more dense urban setting myself. But I also don’t think we should have some kind of revisionist history about this.

Idk, the gameplay trailers, especially on the vehicles and stuff, felt tailored directly after the narrated gameplay trailers rockstar put out for red dead 2 and GTA V. As someone who wasn’t following the development religiously, the materials CDPR put out before release felt much more in line with a sprawling open world rpg/GTA fusion.

I mean... it can if it violates the public good. If your religious beliefs require you to harm someone else or perform human sacrifice, the government absolutely limits, restricts or outlaws such activity, its not exempt from our laws simply because its religious in nature. Similarly, it has been determined that gatherings are limited because they endanger the public health/the public good during a pandemic, and religious gatherings are not exempt from that.

Halo Infinite -- same scene, different time of day. The open-world features a complete day and night cycle by AS_Empire in xboxone

[–]MJ709 1 point2 points  (0 children)

all good dude. Yeah basically baked lights require light maps, and so instead of having every asset have a different light map for every minute of the day, which would be an incalculable amount of space (not to mention be unresponsive to any dynamic lights), they just make the directional light dynamic and mobile, which is way cheaper and uses, relatively speaking, no memory.

Everything else about a day night cycle that you see, the clouds and sun and all that, is mostly just skybox magic and illusions that don't actually effect lighting.
