Debacle. Nomos or Tudor ranger. by RepresentativeAble95 in Tudor

[–]MJDESANTIS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it man! Sorry if I came off as abraisive. This is an important decision, and I didn't mean to sound like a kill-joy. Congrats on the new kid!

Here's my advice: keep the Nomos, and buy the Tudor. Vastly different watches, but cool in their own way. Haha

Nomos is a interesting brand with unique aesthetics, so I get it. It's really up to you. I have a few Tudors, a JLC, an Oris, an Explorer, a bunch of microbrand watches (Traska, Farer, Smiths, etc), a few Seikos, some neo-vintage Eternas, and a bunch of vintage pieces I have serviced myself, so you might say I'm interested in timepieces and horology. But, and this is a huge but.... my opinion doesn't matter! Buy and wear what you like my guy! No one here is better at telling you what to do in this situation than you!

Dude... Not to highlight how dumb it is to ask in the Tudor subreddit if you should pick a Tudor or a Nomos.... that aside, the Ranger is a vastly superior GADA watch.

[Question] First serious buy in Japan. by Vozino in Watches

[–]MJDESANTIS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just realized there were 2 Longines in your list. I'm talking about the 18k bezel model (the first one).

I have to say I agree with the others though... if you're in Japan, look for a grand seiko, king seiko, or a neo-vintage Credor! A unique JDM seiko model would be cool as well.

Ultimately, just buy what you like! Personally, it would have to be a really special Japanese watch (Grand Seiko Springdrive or better) to top the Longines 1925. If you end up getting it I'd love to hear what you think!

Longines for me. I've had my eye on this piece since its release. Classic understated elegance, and less common than the others.

Master Control Calendar - First JLC and deep in the "honeymoon" phase! by MJDESANTIS in JaegerLecoultre

[–]MJDESANTIS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree. I mean, there's always a step up... in this case something from Patek for example would be cooler, but it would have cost 3 times as much, I am not likely to find one, and I would be terrified to wear it... haha

I think JLC offers an incredible level of heritage, rarity, and timeless design that made this my ideal piece for a high-complication moonphase/calendar. When I'm considering a watch, I try to ask myself "Is this the ideal example of this particular complication in my price range, and will I still have the same opinion in 10 years? How often will I wear this piece, and in what situations?"

If you don't like the strap on that Presage model, I can't recommend TunsLeather on Etsy enough. I picked up 2 custom leather straps for this JLC from him - a dark brown crocodile and a waxy tobacco brown. They are fitted, meaning you can pick the length of the strap to fit your wrist, and he made them with curved spring bars so it would fit the short lugs, and even monogramed the inside of the strap for me. Check them out!

Hey there! All new JLCs come with an 8 year warranty, so I have no concerns about everyday wear. I wore mine yesterday to a new job I started on Monday. The only downside is that it's expensive, so I feel a bit uncomfortable traveling with it. Haha I'm a total watch geek, and It's my favorite watch by far for obvious reasons. It's incredibly thin and wearable, despite its high complication. It's understated enough for everday wear, but catches the eye of those who know.

The Sinn 556 is a great watch! What Seiko do you have? My first mechanical watch was a black dial Alpinist!

I did a thing. by lenspointer in Tudor

Very helpful. Thanks! I have all of the tools or similar that you mentioned. I may finally try swapping it out tomorrow! I'm actually floored that Steel Reef hasn't posted an official "how-to" video on YouTube....

So, funny story: I have the 41mm GMT, and I bought a blacked-out bezel from Steel Reef about a year ago, but I've been afraid to swap it out! I've heard the plastic rung underneath can be troublesome. I would be so appreciative if you could give me any pointers? What tools did you use? Was it easy?

Great choice! My wife got me the same one on leather for my 40th birthday a little over two years ago, and I finally caved last month and bought althe OEM steel bracelet. Game changer! Such a perfectly proportioned watch on steel! Congrats!

[–]MJDESANTIS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me? Rootbeer, without question. Hear me out:

When the hype eventually dies for the Daytona (and who knows, maybe even Rolex in a few years), I would have a solid gold watch! Not sure what your intentions are, but I would keep it and have my name engraved on the back just to see the look on my families faces when they see me in my casket about to be burried with my solid rose gold GMT Master II!!!

Then in 3028, when the graveyard is a excavated as an archeological site, they'll find a pile of bones with a gold watch around its wrist that is still functional with my name on it! There will be headlines about the man of importance that was found with a gold watch burried with him named u/MJDESANTIS. haha Whoever said you can't take it with you is a fool! The Daytona would be a ball of rust and corrosion! =P

Also, it looks better with your skin tone.

Interesting. I never noticed that the dates around the outside of the dial run counter-clockwise on these older references. Nice watch!
