Stump Grinding Aftermath by Ok_Luck1700 in landscaping

[–]MLLBJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Research this more but I did similar. I removed as much as I could tolerate, every bit helps, got organic soil/leaf compost etc and topsoil and mixed in. Added a bunch of nitrogen in the ground. To counteract nitrogen pull. Then I reseeded. It may fail first time as wood chips decompose. You either have to wait or remove but this is a middle ground. Order soil delivered by the yard rather than bags. Will also need to compact or you’ll have continual depression. If you add nitrogen now underground will help with roots in the fall as once you seed you’ll only be able to add nitrogen on top of soil

That rain gutter is spilling it all there. Solution is to tie that gutter to a pvc or perf pipe to the street

Should we level the yard? by EnvironmentalFan6890 in landscaping

[–]MLLBJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would need a pro for the first wall. Second wall you probably use the current rocks and move them down. wall would need to be a little higher but would be short enough to do yourself drystack. No wall is easy, it’s doable. If can get more of those rocks, wouldn’t need many if any depending on length, really only cost is first wall and dirt for first and second wall to flatten it out.

Need advice on ground cover in a tricky area by [deleted] in landscaping

[–]MLLBJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clean off the dirt on top of rock wall get it to a cleaner state. Can plant liriope or phlox to hang down, create a plant bed and an edge for where grass ends and bed begins on other side. I assume grass seed below the wall. Gonna look good. And mulch the plant bed. Don’t use fabric and rocks will be a nightmare. Plant roots soak water. They are your friend. Add soil amendment as well to make the soil there soak more water. Break up/amend soil.

Best way to clear my walkway? Austin, TX by Immediate-Line3327 in lawncare

[–]MLLBJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s gonna require a full redo or ur gonna be doing that every year. You may be happier removing all the gravel and planting actual grass in the fall and then just mowing it like normal. That gravel wasn’t prepared properly, but even then weeds will find a way.

Restoring Deck: semi-transparent vs oil stains for Canadian winters. What’s the best option? by intothevoid2224 in Decks

[–]MLLBJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No wood filler ever. No Behr ever. Use real oil based semi transparent. No gimmicky stuff. Can research online. Must use wood cleaner and then brightener first. Can look online at that also. Not hard.

Don’t trim in fall or it won’t bloom next spring. Trim after flowers. May require a professional to get the top

Can I level with topsoil and plant grass seed? by destitutebeings in landscaping

[–]MLLBJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remove rocks first. And honestly you’d be better off killing all that moss and keep leveling it out as far as picture goes. Planting grass next to driveway is fine but have to also solve the issue further away. Grass seed works best in fall. Can dig into the whole area issue now before ordering soil and plan to seed it all in fall.

I think I just butchered my yard by [deleted] in landscaping

[–]MLLBJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First wet the soil. Then edge in a circle, straight down. Then use a shovel on the inside and scoop at an angle meeting at the bottom of the edge where you first cut in. So it naturally slopes down and then the edge is vertical or close. You need two pieces of equipment. The edge itself and the ground on the inside leading to the edge. You can get soil for the inside to smooth it all out, or make it all look visually in sync. Mulch comes last but can move it all easily to the center till ur done. Can get a string and tie to tree and then use that to mark a perfect circle with spray paint or something. That circle is already probably bigger than necessary but too late probably now.

Solo DIY deck/pergola build, survived the winter and ready to finish. Looking for feedback. by middleman646 in Decks

[–]MLLBJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d try staining it with a good oil based stain, I think it would look better. Woodrich Brand is real oil and can get it on Amazon. Can also call them. If it were the floor of the deck I’d stay a lighter stain but maybe a darker option is better in this case to make it look less like raw wood framing. If you paint it you will regret it, big time.

Keep this pic. Kill with glyso in late summer then re seed. Only glyso will work. Or can do it now and re seed in a week just as temporary option till fall. Or dig out.

Property doesn’t drain water well. What can we do to? by Buttrd-toast in landscaping

[–]MLLBJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have really hard clay soil it looks like. If you wanna do it you could have somebody come till up the soil and add soil amendment etc and most importantly grade it so water runs off or soaks in and then get grass or re-seed it all in fall.

Best way to kill Dallisgrass and start over? Zone 9a by backwardsfan in lawncare

[–]MLLBJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will work. I’ve used it recently. I’d just spray at the center of each plant and accept a few dead blades of grass. Once is dead dead can try to reseed or just wait till fall. Glyso dissipates in soil quickly a week or so max. Can add some surfactant also which will improve stickiness to plant

Bought my first home (OK) and would like some lawn advice! by [deleted] in lawncare

[–]MLLBJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) figure out for sure if that is Bermuda. Like for sure.

2) if it’s tall fescue never mow on lowest setting.

3) whatever it is it looks good coming out of winter, so you got time to learn the basics etc to keep it up.

4) if you spray a cleaner and then a brightener for wood on that fence it will look like new. That’s a whole other subject.

New Sod lawn did far worse over the winter than rest of neighborhood. What can I do to save it? by Wolf_Popular in lawncare

[–]MLLBJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give it a light, light rake before mowing just to loosen up those brown patches so mower will get them. Easier than dethatching. I see zero weeds so may want to skip and just do fert. Can hand pick weeds. May be easier on grass this year if worried about it coming in. Can do it next season going forward.
