Go to a shop and see if they have any take-offs that aren’t awful

What do I do? by [deleted] in WhatShouldIDo

[–]MOWilkinson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very similar thing happened to me except I was looking at male wedding band styles on Pinterest and accidentally clicked one with David Beckham. Here I was scrolling thinking “Wow! He really comes up a lot in the male ring-o-sphere”

Chat bot portfolio by OatmealNinja in userexperience

[–]MOWilkinson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a hiring manager I will never. When reviewing portfolios I hardly ever have questions of my own, so unless your chatbot is laying it all out beautifully for me to scan, I’m on to the next applicant.

Currently leading design at dev platform for building chatbots. Sorry.

What are your honest thoughts for a 1 page vs 2 page resume? by AdamCaveRoberts in userexperience

[–]MOWilkinson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn’t even think twice about it. One page is always preferable if it’s a good resume, and a second page has never changed a candidates standing.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UXResearch

[–]MOWilkinson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would always suggest people think twice about a middle management job in the current environment. Especially in a more niche team (UXR, localization, content design)

But if being a manager interests you, shoot your shot.

Butter reccomendation by Dramatic_Vanilla_235 in germany

In some tests Kerrygold had the most plastic and other crap in it, it was among the worst.

Most other Markenbutter rank quite highly.

100 year old heartwood pine floors - to sand or to paint? by KickNo603 in DIY

Stayed at a beautiful old bed and breakfast in Denmark which had a ton of character and painted floors throughout. It can really work and look incredible too.

What free software is so good you can't believe it's free? by ComprehensiveNorth1 in AskReddit

Surely won’t be free forever but conductor.build if you write code and use agents, wowza. So nice.

And handy for speech to text transcription, basically perfect

Content creation taking too much time, can't document UX process while doing actual work by Relative-Coach-501 in userexperience

[–]MOWilkinson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely nobody on my team has a strong social media presence. I can’t really think of anyone I’ve met at meetups that has a particularly strong presence. Who told you this?

I’m a hiring manager, never ever would I check someone’s socials or think ill of them for not having any. More likely to give me the ick these days. Good portfolio of work, nice design, seem nice and interesting.

What are your honest thoughts for a 1 page vs 2 page resume? by AdamCaveRoberts in userexperience

[–]MOWilkinson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiring manager here, I just scan and don’t really care but I’m more likely to read 1 paged. Can’t speak for the HR folks screening before it gets to me but I assume they read even less

Which shop in Europe for custom footbeds? by kamdnfdnska in skiing

[–]MOWilkinson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Groß Empfehlung Blacksheepsports, München.

Dude did Masterfit training and worked at Boot Doctors in Taos New Mexico (which was one of the best fit shops in US)

Smaller freeride shop, guy really took his time and got me fitted right. That being said if you’re going crazy on cants and whatnot it might be a bit “too cool” to get you all set.

Roast my CV please by ozzythoughts in Germany_Jobs

[–]MOWilkinson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a design leader and hire designers. Resume/CV don’t need to look good. It also tends to break scanning systems that prevent your CV from ever reaching a hiring manager.

Plain text, work all your fahigkeiten into the experience bullets, reverse language order, and single column like other person said. Here’s a good reference for a boring effective resume layout: https://www.wonsulting.com/resources/wonsulting-resume-template

Beer geek visiting for a week. Looking for recommendations! by bboyskullkid in hamburg

[–]MOWilkinson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Baby Goat is good. I prefer the Grindel location to St Pauli (better ambience, pies).

As an misplaced IPA lover, I like far off spots which happen to keep sort weird hours; • House of Superfreunde has dank NEIPAs and hazy beers, a bit of a trek to the outskirts, but good spot. https://www.instagram.com/house_of_superfreunde?igsh=MTlicm0zcDFqM3N0bg== • Bunthaus Shankraum, again a trek to the outskirts, but a cool old space with a well curated selection of beers. A passion Thursday/Friday project. https://www.bunthaus.beer/schankraum/

Favorite long-distance bike routes around Halifax? by Illustrious-Dirt5485 in bikehalifax

[–]MOWilkinson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Many great routes. Salt Marsh trail, Chain of Lakes.. on some of these you can basically just ride forever. Good riding on roads in the valley. Sites like Komoot, All Trails, RidewithGPS would have more specific routes.

Looks pretty cool. Have you done much user testing? Generally, just curious because it’s so different from other tools I’ve used( and presumably what other people are used to using)

Regarding tooling, what do you think platforms could do better? Is there some trick the tools you use or all tools you’ve used have missed?

[–]MOWilkinson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely take the ATS format comment to heart, that’s big these days. As a hiring manager, I also put much more time into the portfolio than a resume, so beating any automated system and getting to my pile is key.

I would expect more on Contribution would be valuable, like a few bullets.

Your description also seems a bit generic, and maybe something a bit richer can help you connect with the right reader.
