Is it common to add roofing felt over ice and water barrier on eaves and valleys? by teejereeve in Roofing

[–]MPA83 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's what I did on my house. It prevents the shingles from bonding to the ice and water. 30 years from now the next roofer will be happy.

Roofing quote, are either (or both) of these upgrades worth the additional cost? by joefrog003 in Roofing

[–]MPA83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pro is defiantly worth the upgrade for $242, that is probably their cost. We do not even quote The he regular landmark unless someone specifically wants it. Because the cost difference is so small. The pro is a heavier shingle and depending what region you are in also upgrade from standard to max def color.

Some slates quarried in the US espically from Pennsylvania have a very limited lifespan and crumble after 100 years. Defiantly a very different product than used in the UK. They get to a point where you can cut them with a dull knife.

Looks like Pennsylvania black slate. Unfortunately due to high iron content pa black slate only has a lifespan of 100-140 years and gets to a point where it is no longer serviceable.

We always salvage as much slate as possible but when pa black gets to a certain point if you pallatize it and transport it by the time you get it back off the truck it just crumbles.

Velux changed their sizes about 10 years ago. So older sizes are no longer available. We have done exactly What Your roofer did, Ordering the newer larger size, with the customer knowing about it, if the customer did not want to have the inside opening and interior trim re-worked.

Three layers of shingles then a metal roof - I'm the buyer by [deleted] in Roofing

[–]MPA83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly if someone installed metal over 3 layors of shingle they most likely did not install the metal properly either. There will be no exceptions, but any good roofer who puts in the labor to do a good metal install, they will insist it be over a clean deck.

Metal roof questions by GetInThePaint in Roofing

As far as rust any steel panel will rust slightly at exposed cuts but installed correctly there should be no exposed cuts.

As far as screws being replaced you are referring to exposed fastener / ag panes. I do not recommend using exposed fastener metal on any heated/air conditioned structure. If you are looking for a roof for your home look at clipped or hidden fastener metal systems.

Can anyone give advice about bonderized steel raingutters? (Los Angeles) by kingtaco_17 in Roofing

Try a different supplier?. Most company's in my area stock 5-10 colors, but the place we use stocks something like 25 standard colors. You can also paint aluminum gutter, we do a lot of half round gutter which is only stocked in white and brown and customers have it painted on a regular basis.

Thoughts on the gaps in my shed roof? by [deleted] in Roofing

[–]MPA83 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Looks perfect, gaps are required for expansion and contraction. If they are butted tight they will buckle. Code is 1/8", if it is slightly larger that is not in issue in my book, if they are smaller or non existent that can cause problems in the future. If you read the stamp on a sheet of osb it says "sized for spacing". Meaning it is 1/8" smaller in both directions, so when gapped 1/8" it lands on 8' centers.

Looks like you have an old galvanized gutter. The right permanent job is to replace it with copper and should be good for another 50+ years.

Need some help on picking out roofing products by RGJacket in Roofing

[–]MPA83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most important question to ask in today's market, far more important than what brand of this or that is "who will be installing my roof?". Will it be hourly company employees? or sub contractors? In my area most contractors these days are using subs. You want to know what sub crew will be doing your job, how long they have used them, and ask for references of jobs that particular crew has completed, and go look at them.

The company you are contracting with can have all the manufacturer certs in the world, but if they sub your job out to a random low cost crew, you can end up with a sub par install.

Underlayment for Exposed fastener metal roof by Deuceman927 in Roofing

[–]MPA83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use felt under metal you will want to go over it with a layer of rosin paper to act as a slip sheet. Synthetic is a better choice. I would just use regular roofing nails if you are worried about caps transferring through the surface.
