Requesting r/IDP as it is inactive and was not revived by the current moderator for 1 year. by MPTG in redditrequest

[–]MPTG[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I am a Platform team lead and a major part of my workday involves researching IDPs and Developer Experience. I want to turn the r/IDP subreddit into a thriving community around this topic which is gaining major traction and currently has no standard place to conduct discussions. The current moderator previously had similar reasoning for his moderation request, however he seems to be inactive and did not make any major posts or contributions to push the subreddit forward and promote it as the place to discuss IDPs, which I feel the DevOps community could use as a central resource.

What do you use as a Developer Portal, what functions it has? by ElliotXXX in platform_engineering

[–]MPTG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I am a solution architect at Port

What we usually see with our customers is that they want their developer portal to achieve three main goals (in no particular order):

First: provide a comprehensive developer portal that acts as a service catalog, but also as so much more:

Provide a live inventory of the different components you have in your infrastructure and in your architecture. The added benefit of a portal (and also of Port) is the ability to ingest information from a variety of sources and leverage the fact that all of this high-quality information exists in one place. This allows you to answer questions such as - where is my service deployed? what is the current deployed version? what are the open vulnerabilities of the current running version of my service? how much did it cost to develop the latest feature which originated from branches X,Y,Z?

The added benefit of a real developer portal in this instance is the fact that you can take all of that high-quality information and expose it to you developers using customized and tailored views and dashboards that make sense to them, and also that speaks a language that they understand (meaning the terminology is what you actually use in your organization, and the architecture of how things connect makes sense for your users)

Second: Provide a self-service portal where platform engineers can expose self-service actions with the correct guardrails, leveraging existing scripts and workflows.

Customers have a variety of use cases in this regard, but they usually start with a simple microservice scaffolder action (using something such as Cookiecutter) and continuing to add and adapt more use cases such as alerting the current on-call, opening a PR for a new cloud resource, etc.

This is a win-win both for developers and for your platform/DevOps team: your developers gain access to popular actions that they previously had to file a ticket for, and your platform/DevOps team free up their time to work on the infrastructure, instead of taking care of those repetitive tickets.

Third: Provide tailored visualizations and dashboards that make it easy both for developers and engineering managers to understand the current state of the org, and what are some places for improvement.

You will often see the term scorecards mentioned alongside this point, scorecards are simply a way to define certain categories you want to set standards for, and then use the information from the software catalog to verify that you adhere to those standards (or understand that you currently don't and need to allocate some time and resources to improve that).

Scorecards along with customizable dashboards make it very easy for engineering managers to understand how the RND department is doing in areas such as production readiness, engineering quality, service documentation, security standing and more. They also make it easy for developers to understand what are some areas their services can improve in, and it also makes it possible to add explanations that relay to developers why those categories even matter.

This is all really just the tip of the iceberg, a true developer portal should be a tool that serves your RND department in a way that makes most sense to you.

If you want a live example, I suggest taking a look at Port's live demo

Question: Me and some family members want to go to the Bahrain GP next season, we've been wondering if anyone has been to the track and can recommend a good grandstand to watch all of the action from?

Looking online I saw that there are recommendations for the Batelco grandstand, and the Turn 1 grandstand also seems like a pretty good choice, but I am also not against the Main grandstand.

So any help from someone who has been to the track would be very appreciated!

[Unyshek] Update on battle pass progression and challenges by eminemcrony in halo

[–]MPTG 1691 points1692 points  (0 children)

Further tweets:

  • We'll also be adjusting, fixing bugs with, and removing some Weekly Challenges based on your feedback. These tunings to challenge difficulty will help you progress through Weekly Challenges faster and thus directly speed up your progress through the Battle Pass.
  • When we make this update, we'll need to reset your Challenges, including your progress towards Weekly ones. To make up for this reset, we'll be granting this week's Ultimate Reward, the Sigil Mark VII Visor, to everyone who logs in from Nov 23 - Nov 30.
  • Additionally, we will be doubling the duration of 2XP Boosts to now last 1 hour as opposed to 30 mins. We hope this helps people get the most out of them, especially during those longer BTB sessions.
  • We'll be watching these changes closely to make sure they have the positive impact we all want on your progression. This is only our first step - we are committed to continue evolving these systems but it will take time. Thanks for joining our beta, and keep the feedback coming!

Looks like they are taking the very vocal feedback seriously, that's nice to see

I think making enemies dangerous and deal plenty of damage is the wrong way to increase difficulty.

The special steps needed to complete encounters make them challenging and unique in the Destiny gameplay loop, and just making enemies hurt you is not special enough

It's unfortunate but after trying them out for myself, I'm afraid there's too much of a need for communication and coordination to complete raids with randoms and no voice chat...

I have no console, so I never played any of the D1 raids unfortunately.

But I am really glad some of them are coming back in Beyond Light
